hey ladies- never posted anything before but after yesterdays news...testing positive for gestational diabetes, just curious if anyone else is going through the same thing???
I didn't test out positive, but I have seen on other month boards they have a weekly thread for mamas with GD to talk about their readings for that week and trade ideas on food, management, etc. I think that would be a fine idea for us to do now that we are all either testing real soon or have already tested
Yup! I've got GD. I'm just managing it with diet for now. I'm hoping I don't have to take insulin. I've been struggling with keeping my fasting sugars low. They've been borderline high averaging at about 90-95. I need better night time snack options. Anyone have any ideas?
Yes, I have it, too. In the big picture it's a small amt of time to need to be on a strict diet but every now and then I feel sorry for myself bc I want a CUPCAKE!!! Sigh...My fasting numbers have ranged from 62-85. I go in Fri and sure have a lot of questions! I'd love recipe sharing and overall support!!!
I got the call yesterday that my numbers were slightly elevated. I'll have to follow a strict diet and test my blood sugar four times daily. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed and worried.
I got it too! It isn't so bad. I was told that there isn't much that I flat out cannot have. My fasting sugars have to be between 60-95 and then under 120 two hours after breakfast, lunch & dinner. For the most part I'm doing very well. Every once in a while I have a really high number because I indulge on pizza or pasta, which my doctor said is just fine.
Hi, I have never posted here either. But just got the call! I'm nervous and feeaking out. I'm a nurse and work nights, making me really nervous as to how I will alter my diet. I actually am eating healthier now than I did prior to pregnancy. Waaaaa
I have to return for the 3 hour testing because I showed up high after the 1 hour. I am actually really nervous and started freaking out when I was told.
I think apart of me is just upset because I have had so many issues with this pregnancy that it is just upsetting. I had a miscarriage right before this pregnancy then started spotting at 12 weeks and it was back I had Placenta Previa. Now this..
I was really upset after I got the call too, but when I sat down with a diabetic counselor she asked me how a typical day is for me. Honestly you'd be surprised how close you probably are to where you need to be. I had to cut out regular soda (which I shouldn't be drinking anyway) & juice. For breakfast I usually had a big bagel, eggs & bacon. I had to subsitute the bagel for an english muffin. I can't eat giant plates of spaghetti or a damn near a whole pizza like I used to. I actually just try to stay away from those two things because they are my favorites. My doctor told me that every once in a while it's ok to indulge, as long as your sugars are within range and you're doing everything right they should be able to control it with diet. It's when you're following the "diet" and your sugars keep climbing that they get concerned. Trust me, this mama loves her food, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck to you all, if you need support or have questions please ask away
I've now had gd so about 17 weeks, the diet isn't bad at all I just skip the bread, plan other things than pasta for dinner 90% of the time. I had a scare earlier this week because I had a bad day but I thought I was eating ok but my #s were super high, they are back to normal now and I found out that being sick (I had a cold) can affect my readings. Taking a walk after meals helps also.
I found out I have GD today too. I cried and cried. Between my hormones and making me feel like a bad momma I was pretty upset. But between these posts and talking to the dietician I think I'm going to be fine, and feel much better. Good to know there are other Mommas out there who've had to handle it and everything worked out.
I have it too but I don't think I'm a bad person or anything and you guys shouldn't either! I didn't cry or think it was the end of the world and wasn't disappointed when I was told about it. I just chalked it up as something else I had no control about when I took my test and work at eating better and follow my dietitian & doctors suggestions. I think I surprised my doctor and the nurse who told me that I had it that I just said ok and asked how to make it better and wasn't devastated. There are a lot of other things that are worse than GD while pregnant. Its manageable even if you have to take insulin and most likely temporary. With that it's time to check my blood sugar, which personally is kinda fun. My husband is keeping record of his too since I have to.
This is my second baby and with my first I had GD. It was hard but I got through it. I had a 6lb 9oz baby girl who is now a very energetic three year old. I was tested very early because of my family history and I failed both tests. They tested me early this time too and I failed the 1 hour and I took the 3 hour which I still waiting on the results for that one. The last time I didn't have to take insulin. I controlled it by diet but at the very end I was given a pill because it was getting out of control. Mind you I am only 15 weeks along. You'll do fine. Just control you carbs.
Just failed my one hour. I'm not surprised since I have Celiac (strong correlation between type 1 and celiac...I'm aware that GD and type 1 are different, but makes me wonder what the correlation is)
I have it too...although I'm an August '15 mom-to-be, they tested me way early (11 weeks) because of my family history, and I definitely failed both tests. I am having some serious frustrations as my fastings have been high - anywhere between 115-92 and my new doc wants to see 90 and below. all of my post-meals have been fine, so I know I'm doing the diet thing right. I am scared to death of needles and really, really hoping this doesn't go to insulin, but with numbers this high in my fasting at 18 weeks, I'm afraid I am heading there. Anyone have any suggestions on these darn fasting numbers? I hate that I am trying so hard and getting high sugars from overnight...and they say stress is bad for the little one, but how can you not stress over this? *Sigh*
@tlpyott I'm going through something similar. I got tested early (at 12 weeks) because of family history. I'm about 28 weeks and I've been managing GD with diet. The nurse/dietician I check in with want my fasting numbers to be below 90 as well. When I talk to the doc she said my numbers were ok just slightly elevated. I looked up info on the American diabetes association site and it said fasting should be to up to 95 and glucose levels should be 140 after meals. I was told fasting to be 90 and 130 after meals.
Im having a hard time keeping my fasting sugars low too. I try protein only snacks like almonds, hard boiled eggs or cheese but I'm getting soooo tired of eating the same thing every night. I've also tried cinnamon tea since I heard it helps. However, my numbers in the morning are hardly ever below 90.
Sorry if I'm not much help. I'm kind of in the same boat you're in.
I failed the one hour was at 167. Pretty upset. Just scheduled the 3 hour test for a week from Saturday. I know the next two weeks will be me researching everything.. trying not to be discouraged but it's just one more thing to add to my already high stress level.
@CillyMama, they are stressing the protein snacks to me too! I did get some good news... I just heard from my OB's nurse yesterday who looked over my last week of numbers and she said (aside from the protein) that if it's just fasting numbers that are out of whack, there is an oral med for bedtime which is likely the next step, so that sounds really do-able! hopefully that will be an option for you - def worth asking about!
@queequeg09256 I wanted to cry at first! but it turns out if you do have it, it's mostly just cutting your carbs, and testing your blood, which is not the most fun thing on earth but definitely manageable! I failed the one hour EPICALLY at 236, so at least you weren't that bad! hang in there, lady, it's going to be easier than you think
Uugh I just found out I have GB too!! It seriously seems like one thing after another with this pregnancy it's my first - so I guess I didn't really know what I was getting myself into!! I just wish everything was going more smoothly - but is there really any such thing as the "perfect pregnancy"? I'm meeting with a diabetic educator tomorrow - my fasting was 74 but my one hour was 200!!! And my two hour was not much better at 180, but I was back to normal range after 3 hours. Sorry to complain but I'm just on a major roller coaster emotionally!! Hope the diet keeps it in control, but I'm NOT looking forward to the testing
Diagnosed last week. Saw Diabetes educator today and nutritionist. Trying to stay positive and think about how this gives me the will power to stay out of the junk food.
Kellogg's breakfast shakes help me! I like the chocolate ones at night. It's like a big glass of chocolate milk before bed. They also have 10 grams of protein. My fasting is the easy one. It's the after meal numbers I'm struggling with.
@cbowling126 sounds like a good idea. I'm gonna have to try that. I've been struggling with the fasting. Thanks!
For after meals, it might help to take a quick walk after you eat. It certainly worked for me with my glucose levels after meals. However, now that I'm on modified bedrest, I can't walk as much so I've tried to have larger amounts of protein in my meals.
I just had my 3 hour glucose. My fasting, 1 hour and 2 hour were all high. My 3rd came in as normal range. The paperwork and my friend running the lab said that 2 out of 3 gives you a positive for GD. Wondering if this was the case for anyone else?
I'm finding that my weekend numbers overall are better than my weekday numbers. I'm thinking it has to do with that I'm more active during the weekend then just sitting at my desk after meals and my fasting is a full 12 hours vs 9-10 hours since we eat dinner pretty late. So I'm going to try taking a break and walking after my meals at work.
I like the idea of a breakfast shake after dinner, as I have been struggling with indigestion in the evenings after dinner and don't really want to eat anything else at that point. Also, I just got a call from my OB that they are putting me on Glyburide at dinner times to help with those fasting numbers - fingers crossed that it works, because next step is more needles (insulin). Ugh...
Just curious. So I've had GD since 10 weeks, as they saw my elevated A1C at my usual 1st tri blood work. I did so good in the beginning, and now been on the plan almost 20 weeks I've been getting a lot more lax.
Does anyone indulge in a special treat once a day? I've been having frozen yogurt or a bowl of cereal every other night or so, and I take glyburide for my fasting numbers at night too, and my levels are good in the mornings. I guess I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who does this and if I should feel bad for doing so.
I know I can't have pasta, pizza or sandwiches daily, and I don't but maybe 2x a week for lunch my numbers are high due to a said sandwich or pizza. This is hard, but I want to continuing what's best for baby.
So I had a protein shake last night and this morning my fasting number was below 95!
@starrysmile18 I indulge every once in a while too. I feel like it's so difficult at this point because we're in the 3rd trimester and have been doing this for a while. I think that as long as your overall numbers are good you should be ok. The nurse I check in with says it's ok to have the occasional treat as long as I can balance it with a little exercise. Since I'm limited I just use my shake weights. Lol.
Also my OB told me that they mostly care about the fasting numbers. Since high fasting numbers are associated with still births. I don't think you should feel too bad. It's all a matter of balance.
I had my official diagnosis. My OB will sign the orders tomorrow for me to go to the diabetes clinic. Also, went grocery shopping and stocked up on healthy high protein snacks.
I barely failed my 1 hour (8 points over), but miserably failed my 3 hour with all of my numbers being between 215 and 280 (except fasting). I'm waiting a call from the dietician to set up an appointment. I was hopeful that I could control it with diet, but because my numbers were so high, my OB isn't optimistic about it. But hey, it's only for 11 more weeks...I can handle that!
My doc requires 135 to pass. I was 138. The nurse begged him to draw another slide of blood...... And 135 on the dot. A miracle sorry your diagnosis is gd @laurendutch. Boo
I just wanted to share some happy news - started my glyburide with dinner last night and not only was my fasting under 90 for the first time since diagnosis, I was at 81! I'm very excited. Hoping that this will be enough to take me through the rest of the pregnancy with no insulin.
as for indulgences, my nutritionist said the same - the occasional indulgence is ok, but make sure you log what it is you had, so the doc can see why your numbers were high at that time. otherwise they might mistakenly think you are spiking for no reason. provide lots of info and be honest so the doc knows how best to treat you!
@laurendutch I do greek yogurt...dannon lite and fit greek is 9 carbs and they have yummy flavors like boston cream pie and raspberry chocolate - so it helps with the sweet tooth!
This is my first time posting here. I just was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and went to see the doctor today to discuss my results. I was given all the information to make an appointment to see the dietician where they will go over blood testing and diet. I also was prescribed Glyburide and told to start taking it tomorrow morning. Well after coming home I went online and started reading on Glyburide and found that it sometimes will lower the blood sugar too low. I already have a call in to the doctors office but they probably won't get back to me until the AM. My question is if I don't even have the glucose monitor yet and certainly don't know how to use it until I go to the class should I be taking this medication already? How will I know if it's working right or if it's not if I'm not supposed to monitor my blood until after I take the class? Also has anyone else been given medication right away before trying just the diet first? Like I said, I will ask the doctor all these questions as soon as they get back with me but I was wondering if any of you have had a similar experience. Thanks!
