Breech Moms, When Are You Scheduling a C-Section?

My doctor will schedule starting at 39 weeks. We're still a few weeks away, but I'm losing hope that she'll turn. When are you scheduling your c-section if baby is breech?

My baby is not breech this time, but my first was. I was scheduled for a c-section at 39w6d. He turned head down at 39w1d, so I did not have the c-section.

  • There is a really long post on breech babies, not to far down the board. You might find loads of information there to. My baby is breech, I'm scheduled for a c-section at 39 weeks. I'm 36 weeks now, many things can change between now and then.
  • I'll be 39 weeks in 4/10, which also happens to be my husbands return date so I am planning a party that Saturday for him with Sunday and Monday to rest and then have the baby that Tuesday (4/15) but my dad is pushing for 4/16 so he can share a birthday with her... I hate to wait any longer:(
  • I have an ultrasound tomorrow- if she is still breech I will schedule a version for next week and hope she stays put. IF she turns again we will do one other version and induce right away. I am hoping she is not breech tomorrow- but I will prob schedule a section IF ALL else fails at 39 weeks
  • Baby boy is not breech but I have to schedule anyway since I am having a RCS. My doctor will not schedule any earlier than 39 weeks so we went with 4/14 (39+3).
  • @thing3ontheway why so heavy on the inversion? I'm just curious my doc hadn't mentioned it at all.
  • We still have until next month, and there are things you can do to get baby to turn, don't rush into a c section, the recovery is way worse!
  • @thing3ontheway why so heavy on the inversion? I'm just curious my doc hadn't mentioned it at all.

I'm so freaked out about a section- I have both celiac and crohns, and really worry about healing as I have little cuts that can take up to & months to heal, I can't imagine how long a section surgery would take for me and the risk of infection between that time-Having 3.5 yesr old twins at home I care for also is a concern with length of time, I'll only have help for a short amount of time. In addition I have something called RSD/CRPS I developed after ankle surgery in 2001. Short version because it's not well known.... It's a nervous system disorder that essentially sends signals to you brain your in extreme pain (my case 8/10 on the pain scale) to the affected area (ankle). But because they don't know which nerve is misfiring they can't "burn" the nerve- no medication helps, it is so hypersensitive I have to wear an ace bandage to function at all times, the pain and loss of muscle mass caused me to loose my ability to run, drive standard, ride a bike ect. I spent lots of time in the best Boston Hospitals to help learn to live with the pain because there is no cure- but essentially if I need surgery (cut you open surgery) I have such a high chance of it spreading to the "trauma" sight. I can't imagine what I have in my ankle in my stomach too, the possibility of severe pain to hold my children would kill me. I really don't want a section and feel anything short of it is the best, safest and risk free for me. This also being my second pregnancy I'm likely to not go past my due date ( possible but less likely then FTM) so being 36 weeks I need to get all the ducks in a row. Also they say doing a version at about 37 weeks is the best time because baby has enough room to be turned, but before would have too much room to flip back easily.
  • This little miss is not breech but DS was and we actually scheduled it for 40 weeks and 3 days due to the surgeons availability. I hadn't gone into labour yet so it was fine.
  • I'm 36+4 and have one scheduled for when I'm 39+3. They aren't going to try a version because my placenta is anterior. They are just hoping she will flip before then.
  • Baby boy moves so much. He will be head down, breech and transverse all in one week. We are scheduled for induction at 39 weeks and two days, which is ten days away. If he is breech then doctor will do c section. Either way my little man gets to share a birthday with his daddy

I'm in the same boat. I'm 38 weeks 5 days. I'll be having a csection in 9 days!!

Unless he flips but I'm not holding out hope as he's been breech since 26 weeks.
  • I'm 36 weeks 5 days and originally had a csection scheduled for 4/8. I'm due 4/9. At my u/s on Friday they decided they wanted to take the conservative approach and do the csection 2 weeks prior. I also have a velamentous cord insertion so they don't want to risk me going into labor. I'm kind of anti version so I wouldn't have agreed to give that a try. My csection is scheduled for 3/31. Two weeks from today!!

Since we all seem in the same boat, is there anything we can do to prepare for the csection? My doctor gave me this scrub to use for the 3 showers prior surgery. Just curious if there is anything else to help aid recovery.
  • @kjones115, I'm curious to know why your anti-version? I'm scheduled to have one in the morning (hoping and praying he has flipped by then) but I'm pretty anxious/nervous about it.  I really don't want a c-section though........

I'm not holding out hope either. Baby girl has been breech since 25 or 26 weeks... 20 days until mine! I'm starting to freak out a little bit.
  • @watermelon28 after doing some research and discussing with my doctor the cons outweighed the pros for me. I'm a FTM so I had that going against me. I'm also really petite so I thought of that too (even though I don't know if this has anything to do with it). It also seems like you're forcing an unecessary trauma on the baby. Kind of like if the baby is in that position it's there for a reason. Maybe the placenta and cord location? No idea but this was kind of my thought process. It seems like the risks associated with a version are higher for the baby than the Mom and the risks associated with a csection are higher for the Mom than the baby. They won't even attempt a version on me though due to the cord placement.

I hope your version works though!! Keep us posted and good luck!
  • I understand what your saying.  My doctor seems to think that I should really attempt the version and is even willing to do it twice if it doesn't work. The only reason I'm going through with it is because I know they will be monitoring the baby closely and we will be already checked in at labor and delivery if anything does go wrong. I've been reading that it's much more painful/uncomfortable for mom and they baby is normally not even phased.  I've been reading stories all morning! I'll try to update tomorrow.
  • Good luck watermelon hope it does the trick,
  • @thing3ontheway that all makes sense! Good luck and I hope little one stays Putin the right position:)
  • @watermelon28 please keep us updated!
  • So still breech and scheduled for the version next weds  :((

Hey! My little man was breech at 34 weeks, 35 weeks now and he's no longer breech.... He's head down thankfully, being induced 29th March x
  • Some ideas for those looking to try and turn baby and somethings to consider for those going through with the C. I have one of 6 women in the world certified in spinning babies here in Singapore.

For turning baby - have you tried chiropractic adjustments? I go weekly to keep everything in line and baby is always back in line right after. Make sure it's someone with prenatal experience.
And have you ever heard of spinning babies? Research the 3 stretches (side lay, rebozo, and inverted) you can do to help relax certain uterine muscles to help turn baby too. The inverted one (knees on couch, elbows on floor, 3-4 deep breaths, he helps you sit up) is the absolute best!!! Your SO should help you with all of them.

As for those going through with it (or to consider putting in your birth plan anyway) look up 2 videos:
The Microbirth Documentary which talks about the crucial transfer of vaginal bacteria to baby.
TedX talk on the Critical 90 seconds after delivery about delayed cord clamping.

Not telling you what to do, but some food for thought for alternatives to consider if you're looking for them.

  • There was a question about how to prepare for cs and I thought I'd chime in here - had 2 already and needing a third in 4 weeks. When you pack your hospital bag make sure to think about what pants you'll wear after and home from the hospital - you'll want something higher up that will clear your incision. Many of my yoga pants weren't even quite right :( a dress also works well if the weather is right. Then think of underwear for the same issue - even my boy shorts hit at the wrong spot and needed to buy some giant granny underpants to feel comfortable for a few weeks. Finally, my first hospital gave me a support band that I wore post-surgery across the incision that I found helped - ask for one if they provide it. I didn't use of like with my second much, but was great for the first one.
    DS born 10/25/11 **  DD born 6/24/13 **  DS born 4/20/15
  • @xuxachi thanks for the advice! I was just planning on wearing leggings but I think they'll hit at a bad spot. I'll have to run out and find an alternative.
  • I'm back to update on my version in case anyone checks back in!

They were able to successfully turn the baby in just a couple of minutes. It was quite painful while they were pushing on my belly, but since it was over so quickly it wasn't too bad. The worst part was not eating or drinking for 8 hours beforehand! :)  They had monitors on the baby for over 2 hours afterwards, which was very uncomfortable because the bed sucked, but I'm glad they kept their eyes on the baby and made sure he handled it well. His heart rate was great the whole time and he seems to be just fine.

After my experience, I would recommend having a version if you really want a good chance at avoiding a csection.  I know there is a chance the baby could flip back over, but I feel good that I tried. And if I have to have a csection, I know that will be okay too.

  • watermelon28 I was wondering about you! So glad you had success! When are you due?
  • I'm due April 7th ;)
  • Bumping this up as there are a few new mommas in the breech problem area with questions.

Anyone get some new news that baby turned yet?

  • I have been pretty quiet over here for most of my pregnancy (haven't posted since very early on) but just wanted to say that I really appreciate all of the version details! ☺️ I have one scheduled for tomorrow and am pretty nervous, but so glad to hear that it worked out for you @watermelon28! @mapledonuts and @thing3ontheway, hoping you ladies have success too. :) Hope I'm not breaking the rules by posting as a stranger, but really wanted to thank you girls for the details.
  • Scheduled for 39 weeks and 2 days. Baby is still breech, bordering on transverse. Good luck to those ladies doing versions!

  • Mine is scheduled for next Monday.. I will be 37+1. It's scheduled early because of bp issues. Good luck everyone!
  • Anyone else in a lot of pain with their breech baby? Mine feels like he's trying to headbutt his way out through my belly button. My bump is sore and hard and he won't stop moving. Kinda worrying me, is it notmal? I'm 38 weeks.
