embrace the bump or maternity swim suit?

Trying to decide if I should embrace my bump this summer or buy a maternity swim suit. My first pregnancy was a winter pregnancy and normally I wear Bikinis. We go swimming all the time since we have a pool and live near the beach. And maternity bathing suits are expensive. We also have a family vacation when Im 35 weeks so I'll be swimming multiple days in a row. So I would need to buy more than one.. Can't decide though. What are your opinions on pregnant ladies wearing bikinis? :-?

Re: embrace the bump or maternity swim suit?

  • I probably will, however I will need to spend some money at least on a maternity suit and probably larger bottoms. I am very petite so even at just over 13 wks I am showing, and my uterus pulled on my bikini bottoms when I tried it on the other day and it didn't look....great. If I feel like spending a few bucks on a size up bottoms I will definitely rock the bikini.

  • I got my first one piece ever 2 summers ago because I have so many stretch marks from #1. I hope to find a maternity tankini that's a similar style, there's nothing cute about my bare bump.

  • You guys are so brave! Personally I've decided not to attempt stuffing this sausage-like body into any stretchy casing this time around. Bathing suit=no go. I will swim next year. lol

I totally rocked the bump when i was pregnante with DD. Though I want to do the same this time I'm VERY nervous to wear such a little top around DD. She's very attached to the boobies and it's a constant battle to keep her hands out of my shirt. I just have this feeling that she's going to pop my boob out in front of everyone.
She flashed people in walmart the other day. I was distracted shopping, she's really quick and these dang tops are SO stretchy.

Edit: auto correct is a pain!
  • I am going to embrace the bump. I am very, very busty and I need like a xl or xxl top for my boobs but wear a size small/medium bottom. So I will be buying a bikini or two because a xl or xxl tankini looks freaking ridiculous on me and a top that will fit my belly won't fit my boobs.

Embrace the bump! I always thought it was cute seeing pregnant woman in bikinis. I live in Southern California and can't wait to go to the beach this summer :)

You and me both! Can't wait to soak up the California sun this summer :-)
  • I think that if a pregnant lady wants to sport a bikini, she should! Low-rise bottoms could conceivably sit below the bump and work throughout, but at least for me, there was enough change in my boobs through pregnancy and BFing, there's no way my regular tops (or bras) fit. So you might need to buy a new suit anyway.
  • With my first I felt like I wouldn't need a maternity suit, but I got bigger everywhere including my bottom. I finally got frustrated and gave in, since even my bikini was too tight. Also just an FYI, make sure you use a good sunscreen on your growing belly. My belly burnt and it was awful. Your skin is already stretched and sensitive. I had sunscreen on but I guess it just wasn't enough for my belly.
  • I wore a two piece with my first one. Now I was only 5 and 6 months with him (born in November ). I'm still debating this time since I'll be at the end of pregnancy. I don't mind two pieces as long as they fit. The pregnant ladies wearing the bikinis they were pre belly is way too small! There needs to be more fabric if prego in my opinion.
  • I've been debating this myself... My MIL wants to buy me a maternity swimsuit but I've always worn bikini's. I do need a new suit though because my tops don't fit. I was looking at a maternity suit at kohls today and I'm pretty sure it would not fit me right now. But I did see a few tankini tops in the juniors section that were really cute and would at least work in the beginning of the summer.
  • We are going on a family vaca in April and my mom ordered me a maternity suit as an Easter present...ugh...I'll be 17-18 weeks with my 3rd and I guess she sees me being to big for my other suits...we shall see! I'm debating on a real bikini at the 30ish week mark...I haven't worn one in probably 8-10 years so I think it's about time! Lol!
  • Bikini for me!! Rock it!
  • Embrace the bump! I'm totally down for that when we go to California this June. Not missing it out on the beach
  • I always wore bikinis until last year. I felt weird as a mom at the swim club or in swim lessons in a bikini.

I'll be getting a maternity tankini or two for most of my swimming. Not sure I want a lot of sun on a stretched out belly.
  • I have always worn bikinis even through my last pregnancy, so many people would come up to me at the pool and beach telling me how adorable they thought i was. I definitely plan to embrace my pregnancy belly but i plan on getting a tankini to because i found a really adorable one! I have to say I had a beautiful pregnancy belly the first time around i hope it stays pretty this time too.
  • Maternity suit for me but I tend to be very modest when it comes to bathing suits even when not pregnant. Aside from the modesty issue a bikini is totally unrealistic for me when I'm at the pool/beach with my 3 kids to chase after. I want to be able to play with them and run around and bend over and not worry about something falling out or flashing those around me. I have a maternity suit from another pregnancy but it's in a much larger size since I was heavier the other 3 times. I'm hoping its not too lose. If it is, I'll probably attempt to wear my non-maternity tankini I had that was too big last summer after losing weight.

Target has some really cute affordable maternity suits for anyone who is looking.

  • Nobody wants to see these stretch marks! This is my 3rd, so I'm gonna rock a one-piece to our fav Water Park/Resort this August. My Aunt also has a pool, so we will be there a lot this summer!
  • No embracing the bump here, lol. Definitely a maternity suit.
  • Same here, my first was in the winter. I have been looking for a tankini top for the summer and wearing my bikini bottoms with it. I have my bikini top that still fits as a back up if I'm feeling brave.
  • I have two maternity bathing suits from target and I just went to Florida for vacation, I was so surprised to have gotten so many compliments! They're suppppperrr comfortable too and so cute! Ps this is the first time I've ever worn a one piece-- wasn't trying to cut out my bikinis but I'm pretty fair skinned and really didn't want sun on my belly
  • I for one will not be wearing a bikini :(, I haven't worn one in years, I was 16 when I had my daughter and the stretch marks are not a nice sight, including my thighs!! I look like Freddie Cruger attacked me :((
  • If it wasn't for those tho I'd defo wear a bikini!
  • I have my regular Victoria's Secret bikini and also just bought a cute maternity tankini that had great reviews, so I'll mix it up depending on the event. I love swimming in the ocean so I'll want to have secure swimwear for that and a bikini for soaking up the sun! Baby needs lots of vitamin D :-)
  • Now that I've seen some really cute maternity suits, I may opt for that instead. The sound of a maternity swimsuit at first sounded ugly lol
  • Totally embrace the bump...!!! Hopefully I have a cute one when we got to Mexico... I will only be 19 weeks but fingers crossed!
  • Embrace the bump! Show it off!
  • Will be going to a family reunion in June and definetly going to just embrace the bump and wear a bikini. Even if I have to buy a bigger size I'll just go to Target or someplace like that and it'll be way cheaper than getting a maternity swimsuit

  • I rocked a one piece the first time and hated it. The second time I rocked a 2 piece and loved it. I got so many compliments on being in a 2 piece I couldn't believe it. This time I'm rocking a 2 piece again. It's so much easier to buy tops and bottoms since I don't have huge breasts but I have a big booty. I have to get on the ball finding a few because we are headed to the beach at the end of April for a bachelorette party.
  • Ladies do you like your one pieces.Like to find a flora one.Need one for swim class. Thanks ladies.
  • Embrace it!!!!! :):):):D
  • I always wore bikinis - and started feeling weird chasing my 2 year old so last year started wearing tankinis. Wore last years swim suit on Thursday - OMG the bust was tiny. I felt so exposed. (Not used to that at all!!!)

No way I am going to be able to wear the half dozen + bikinis I already own with their mostly tiny triangle tops that fit my prepregnancy barely A cup breasts just fine.
  • I'm at the beach this weekend and I'm wearing a two piece! Embrace it girl!
  • Just enjoyed our babymoon in a bikini and a maternity tankini. I usually only wear bikinis but that Caribbean sun seemed to be fixated on my lovely bump (no matter how much I turned and reapplied sunblock! ). Needless to say that tankini came in handy! & it was super comfy
  • Might get a bikini thanks ladies. So I can show my big bump off.If I get a bikini I need to trim a little bit lol.
  • I got a cute new black tankini too to match with my bottoms that I already had. I'm hoping that will be fine for us. We have a great community pool a few doors down and we plan on living there all summer.
  • My bikini from pre-pregnancy was one with very full coverage on the top (not a triangle/string type). I haven't dug it out of storage yet to see if it still fits but my boobs haven't gone up by more than a half of a cup (still in my pre-pregnancy bras) so I'm guessing I'll be able to rock at least the top the whole time. It's plain black so finding bottoms should be easy if my regular ones won't work. I have no problem with rocking the bump, I'll just be concerned about my belly burning. I don't tan, I burn.
