What Would You Do - Introducing Foods While Nursing Question

Hi Moms! I was on here for a brief while during my pregnancy and then disappeared when my girls were born. Anyway, my girls are about five months old now and I am looking ahead to when I will start giving them food. Here is my question (basically I want you to tell me what you would do!):

My girls are EBF and refuse to tandem nurse. So, I nurse one and then nurse the other. As I begin to introduce foods, would you sit them down together and feed them the food, then nurse them as normal? Or would you feed one food, nurse that one and then do the same with the other?

I am a SAHM and have time to do it either way and I have an older child so I know this phase won't last forever. I just want to introduce foods as easily as possible while also not tanking my supply. Thoughts?

  • We formula feed but I don't see how it would be any different. The doctor said at this age, the baby food isn't meal replacement yet. So she said we should give them bottles first and then the baby food. We feed ours at the same time so I would nurse yours one at a time then offer baby food? Would that work?

We tried just offering a couple of ounces, then baby food, then the rest of the bottle. Yeah, that didn't work for us. B would throw a fit and then E wouldn't finish her bottle. Full bottles and then baby food for us haha. They are just learning how to eat so it's pretty messy!

  • I am dreading the mess! Ha! My first baby was such a neatnik and I am sure these two will be little tornados! Ha!

I think what you said made sense. I think I will do the small amount of food and then nurse each. Just adds another thing for me to do but I do think that makes the most sense. Thanks!

We introduced solids around 6 months and my babies are EBF.  I always tried to nurse them first so that they were never too full to nurse and get a good feeding in that way.  So if they woke from a nap at 4, I would nurse them (either together or separate- lately it is 90% one at a time because they are quick and big and I like the individual time), then I stick them both in their high chairs with some cheerios while I make their meal.  They get their babyfood mixed with a little cereal at the same time; one bowl, one spoon.  I tried feeding them solids separately once and it just took so long, so we went this route.  It still feels like the whole eating ordeal takes time, but spoon feeding them together helps.  In the beginning they just got a solid dinner.  Now they get three meals (though sometimes it is comprised more of finger foods that I cut up for them rather than a bowl of baby food).  I think sometime in the past month (8-9 months) it started to feel like the breastfeeding is now supplementing the solids rather than the other way around.  They still nurse about 4 times a day.

And yes- it is quite messy!
