Jury duty

So I got called for jury duty and got assigned to a case. It is pretty interesting and we get enough breaks so that is pretty awesome. My vent is since I am a RN I will basically be either working or jury duty for 7 days straight. I worked last Sat/Sun, jury duty Mon-Thur. and scheduled to work on Friday. I am already exhausted and it seems there is no way to not work on Friday. My boss says my jury duty doesn't count as hours worked and we are short on Friday so I am expected to be there. I just can't believe jury duty doesnt count as hours worked. I checked with HR and they can't help me. I definitely don't want to leave my coworkers high and dry but am also worried about my ability to be an effective nurse. I am sure I am just pregnant, tired, and crabby! Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Jury duty

  • So I'm not 100%, as I've never had jury duty, but I would have thought that jury duty did count as hours for work. Like, you're not expected to go to jury duty all week and then go to your actual 9-5 job too if you've served for 40 hours or close. I mean, that's partly why they pay you for your time, albeit not much. I would do some more research on the subject and make sure that you are being covered from all angles. Best of luck!

  • I got called for the 23rd and my work fully covers it as paid time. You might want to look into it...
  • THis reminds me I need to find my letter. I hope it didn't pass already.
  • I don't know why the rest of my comment got cut off. But I was saying when I worked it counted as worked hours and I got paid for it. Your HR should be able to help out or do you have a handbook? If not call in. Your health is more important and you can't help people if your not well. Good luck!

I was on a jury in January for two weeks. My work paid me for it so I didn't have to call off or anything.

Turns out work will pay for my jury duty day IF I am scheduled to work on the same days. Since they happen to fall on my days "off" I am pretty much SOL. Calling in may be my only option. If I had a 9-5 M-F job it wouldnt matter. Sigh.
  • Ugh that's awful and bad luck! I hope you are able to get some rest and not be totally wore out by the end of it all. =(

Thanks @GSUDavis. I think I have moved our of anger and into acceptance lol. I'll just see how I feel Friday.
  • So they will allow you to take breaks?  I would not be very happy if I had to sit on a trial without being able to take a pee break, because we all know pregnant women pee a lot lol
  •  My state (FL) exempts you from Jury Duty if you are pregnant

I'm in Florida and didn't no thatthat's great to know >:D<
  • @jennym2b if you get summoned for Jury Duty, it is right on the jury form, you just have to check it off and send it back, you don't even have to show up. I included my pregnancy confirmation from my Dr. just so they knew I was telling the truth.

I'll be going back to work after the baby is born but during those first three months I'll take advantage of that

would be awesome if that happened to me and I am in South Florida Broward County
  • I'm in jacksonville. You can opt out of jury duty if you're pregnant. My job uses it as hours worked. They pay you for it.
