Am I in labor?

Please help I'm so confused! This is my first baby. I started having achy in my left hip while watching tv which seemed normal enough until I tried to go to bed it was hurting pretty bad so I tryed laying on my other side and the pain switched back and forth between my hips and traveled slightly up my sides and radiate to my thighs. It was uncomfortable but I slept upon waking turning over gave me sharp pain causing me to gasp a little. I can't tell if my stomach is getting hard in regular times or not so I'm having a hard time timing anything. Now I'm up after 4 hours when this all started sitting up right and hips aren't really hurting I just have aching lower stomach and I'm super nauseaous!! What's going on?

Re: Am I in labor?

  • I'm nauseas too, and have an achy stomach...but I think that if you don't have obvious, regular contractions, you are fine. These aches and pains seem to just be signs of pre-labour.
I am a ftm too, so this is based on what others have told me...
Hope your pain calms down soon...and hope your baby comes soon too!!

  • I have no clue either with your pains or mine :/ I've been up since 4ish timing "pain" that feels like period cramps but are really low. I was expecting them to be higher if they were contractions. I'm gonna call the office in the am. Right now it's not terrible but does consume my attention. Hope u find an answer to your pains.
  • This late in the game having gas can be pretty excruciating. Trust me, there's no "Is my stomach hard, I can't tell?" About contractions. Your torso tightens so much it's hard to breathe.

  • Is it that way in the early stages too or just active labor?
  • You'll be able to tell if you're having a full contraction. Your whole stomach hardens and changes shape. For me I have regular Braxton hicks that do this but once labor starts its hard and intense and there is no mistaking it. Now as for "early labor" , I can't speak on that because I have yet to experience the days of minor contacting like other women have or are currently. Mine goes from mild period like cramps periodically, some Braxton hicks, with occasional gassy/upset stomach cramps to full on can't talk or walk. At least it did with my first. So we shall see with my second.

Try drinking more water , take a relaxing bath... Those things should calm the cramping unless they are real contractions then nothig but having the baby slows those babies down.

It's different for every woman. For example, I've had random daily intense contractions for weeks now, but no real labor yet. I have a good friend who is as far along as me who has had exactly one BH so far.

  • I have to say, it can be different from pregnancy to pregnancy too. All of my previous pregnancies started the same as far as early labor moving into active. Uncomfortable and painful. Figured this one would be the same as the rest. But with this LO, I believe I'm having silent contractions through my early labor. Just contracting uterus with no pain at all. They seem to be productive too, which is crazy to me. Definitely not complaining, but it is confusing because this is a totally new experience for me.
  • My water broke without contractions at all... And after it broke they were consistent but still BH intensity... It wasn't until they started pitocin that I went into active labor knock your socks off contractions. My body literally convulsed into uncontrollable shaking fits when I had them... Absolutely a huge difference.

That's how my first labor was. And I didn't tolerate pitocin well either. Because it's a continuous drip, rather than the oxytocin your body sends out in waves, it really makes for a rough labor experience. I had very little resting time between contractions. Yuck.
