Smokers

Strangest thing - I had already been trying to quit for other reasons when I got pregnant.  I noticed about three weeks in (a little over 2 weeks before I found out I was preggers) that I developed a natural aversion to cigarettes.  They just tasted bad and made me nauseated - though I didn't have any nausea at any other time so I just thought maybe I was winning the fight, lol.

I read in that "What to expect when you're expecting" book it mentioned that developing that aversion isn't uncommon.  Anyone else here a previous smoker?

Re: Smokers

  • I don't mind cigarettes when not pg (though I'm not a regular smoker), but I definitely have an aversion while pregnant. Helps for those who have the temptation!

  • Yep that sounds exactly like me! I was a smoker and my hubby and I went on a vacation saying that when we came back home we would quit. That we did and strange enough it was the easiest time quitting I ever had (been on and off smoking for years). Turns out we conceived on the vacation so I totally experienced the same thing!
  • wow, that's so weird - I wonder if the body just knows it's bad stuff, lol.  I was never all that careful about my own health - my health, my habit, my risk, you know? - but when it comes to children that's a whoooole different ball game.  I plan on staying quit, and no smoking in the house - I'm not going to go smoke free through the pregnancy just to pump them full of second hand smoke when they get out!

Glad I'm not the only one, lol.  It did help immensely once I realized I was preggers.  I crave the nicotine a little at times, but not enough to overcome the nausea, thank goodness

  • Again, I feel the same way. I always said, eh everybody dies somehow or whatever. But I'm just quitting smoking period, and once I have craved a cigarette I just got a non-caffeine Strawberry Fanta and felt much better ...
  • Yes I was! I quit cold turkey and then found out a week later that I was pregnant lol!! I have just over 3 weeks without smoking. I still am craving them though.
  • Was stressed today and really wanted a cig today all day. Finally bought a single after work and by the time I lit it up I could barely take a puff or two. Haha, crazy but hey, it's a good thing!!
  • I quit the day we found out and the smell makes me want to throw up.

  • When I'm super stressed I still want one, also when my fiancee lights up it's a big trigger for me.  He knows it, though, and he tries really hard not to smoke around me.  Sometimes he'll slip and then be apologetic about it - lately the weather's been nice so it's been easier for him to go smoke outside.  I still need to deep clean everything and shampoo the carpets to get the last of the smell out of the house.

  • I quit for like 2 3 weeks now every once in a while if seriously needed ill take like 2 drags off I cigg because it is better for your baby to take a couple drags instead of stress over a cigg. Granted I feel guilty everytime but I just can't help especailly with my boyfriend smoking its a lot more temptation.
  • I understand every woman is diff every one does things diff BUT really I was a smoker for about 8 yrs one day I decided my kid is more important then me puffing away.. Mb I have stronger will then others but I was able to just stop doesn't mean I don't c someone smoking n b like ahhhhh good times but I just won't start again, now w my preg my neighbors from Down the hall smoke and I wanna barf wen I smell it and those daddy's that can't control themselves shame on them if u have quit and you can't get the support from home that you need its a shame, y should he not have to stop too wdf! Again this is my individual opinion not to reflect or comment on any ones situation.

  • I just want to give some encouragement to all the ladies struggling to quit. I am a smoker of many many years. I have been smoke free for 7 days now! Keep trying don't get discouraged. What worked for me was cutting out one smoke a day. Within a week I was done ;) good luck ladies
  • HUGS to all mamas who quit and are attempting to quit! I've never been a smoker but I know its a hard habit to beat. Hang in there and keep trying!
  • have you ever considered hypnotherapy?  I'm usually one to be skeptical of that sort of thing, but my grandmother was a pack a day smoker, and when she was hypnotized she just suddenly didn't want one.  She carried a pack of cigarettes in her purse for the longest time, expecting it to wear off, and finally threw it out after like 20 years, lol.  It may be worth a try!

  • I quit about 3 days before I found out I was pregnant again. We were out playing pool and I just didn't want to drink my beer and the smell of the cigarettes was making me sick. I should have known then. I quit cold turkey and I seriously hope I never pick it up. It smells so horrible and I can't believe I smelled liked that. Never again.

    Keep up the motivation!
  • I smoked for about 2 years before getting pregnant, but in the first few weeks I found myself wanting to smoke more, and here I am 6 weeks later not even able to look at a pack without getting nauseated.
  • I'm working on it... This pregnancy was a complete shock, I didn't think I could HAVE babies... Anyway, I'm down to about 5 a day and will continue to cut back from there until I'm totally done... The dr said to absolutely not quit cold turkey because it would put too much stress on the baby...
If you go to YouTube and type "subliminal quit smoking" in the search box a whole bunch of great stuff comes up. Rather you are trying or have already quit, this will help with the cravings.
    Good luck to all!
  • I smoked for 15 years my husband smoke for 4 years. I found out I was pregnant and quit cold turkey. Soo incredibly amazing. My taste and smells are so much stronger and now I know my little one will jave less of a chance for asthma.
  • I quit 5.5 weeks ago. It is possible, and it is best for both your health and that of your baby. I have been a smoker for a long time and have quit with each pregnancy. I have noticed through my years as a Labor and Delivery nurse that babies born to mothers who are heavy smokers are much more irritable than non smokers. Just food for thought...
At the very least do not smoke in your home!
