pre labor or early labor but not " true" labor......anyone else ?

Started having regular contractions that were mildly uncomfortable Friday, went to L and D when they got to 5 mins apart. By the time I got to the hospital they were 3 -4 mins apart. I thought yep today is definitely it! I'm only 37 weeks so a little nervous but the nurse assured me it would be fine. After 3 hours of monitoring I never dilated more than a two that I came in at. Dr said they were going to send me home to finish progressing. Be told me to come back when the contractions were so strong I couldn't stand it. Well it's Monday.... And everything is still the same. I'm just mentally and physically exhausted. Very sore from the constant contractions and tons of back pain. Called my Dr this morning begged him to either stop the contractions or try meds to speed things up because I have tried all the things to do at home other than castor oil...that stuff scares me. Anyways he said this is normal and it happens a lot. I have never heard of this before anyone else going through this ?

  • Have you been bouncing and rotating your hips on a birthing ball? I've been through it with other pregnancies. This one, just on and off. Try leaning way over a coffe table, legs spread wide, while sitting on a ball and working your hips both directions, forward and backward and side to side. That should help out pressure on your cervix to help dilate. Bounce on the ball while you watch tv. Try to stay in a positions that take advantage of gravity and getting that baby to corkscrew in the right position.

  • Oh, I am right there with you!!! I was having what I thought was labor contractions all day Friday, but as soon as they'd get regular for a little while, they'd stop and get irregular.. So I never went into L&D but figured I'd go into full blown labor that night.. Well, as soon as I feel asleep, everything stopped. I woke up so upset on Saturday and have been so frustrated and emotional ever since. I now just have tons of BH contractions, but they aren't the same as what I was feeling before.. Grr.. I'm 40 weeks on Wednesday so I am definitely ready for baby to arrive!! Good luck, hun...
  • Unfortunately it's just your body warming up. 37 weeks is still pretty early to try to push things along too much. Maybe lay off the techniques to induce labor as your body doesn't seem quite ready.
  • I've had the same things happening since last Tuesday and I am absolutely exhausted. The doctors thought I would go into labor Tuesday night or Wednesday and here I am still contracting and its frustrating and much more painful than I would like. They said it happens and to wait until I can't talk/walk with the contractions.
  • I've had the same thing going on for two and a half weeks! Made three trips to the hospital so far with regular, time able, painful contractions with no progression. Lost my mucus plug this morning but still only one cm dilated. I'm so uncomfortable and physically and mentally exhausted. Baby girl is breech so maybe that's why things are moving so slowly? It's so frustrating!
  • I've been having contractions since 35 weeks, very close and strong but they are not making me progress. I'm only 1 cm dilated at 38 weeks. I had my son at 37 weeks and this is the longest I've been pregnant and it is not fun. I'm so ready to he done. I know that all these contractions are prepping me for the real deal and I know my baby will come when she's ready.

Unfortunately there is nothing a dr can do to stop it or speed it up. Your body is doing what it needs to be doing. The contractions are doing what they need to be doing. You still technically have 3 weeks until your due date, maybe even 4. It does suck but there is a reason your baby still hasn't come.
  • Maybe instead of trying to speed it up your body doesn't intend on making it the real thing just yet and you could try some things to help relax the contractions. Maybe a nice relaxing bath... I had a bath with some soothing foaming bath stuff the other day and it really helped relax me. I wasn't having contractions but it might help! Make sure you're drinking tons of water too. Maybe a nice relaxing massage too? It sounds miserable to have contractions for so long! I would be upset too.
  • Check out spinningbabies.com. Lots of good info on what may be causing your prolonged labor. Bouncing on a ball will not induce labor if your body isn't ready, so I wouldn't worry about that. Actually, very few things will. Sometimes these little guys are positioned funky and get their chin or forehead caught on your pelvis or hip and can cause these prolonged early labors, or sometimes our posture or the position we sit or lie in makes it difficult for them to rotate into a good position for birth. And sometimes, it is just he way our body wants to do things. But the ball will help stretch and tone those muscles you will be needing for labor, so I highly recommend spending some time on one. Especially, leaning way over, feels really good on my lower back.
  • Yes I have been in early labor for a week now. I'm 39 weeks, it started at 38. My hospital won't intervene until 39 weeks at the earliest so I was told there was nothing they would do. I went in today after not sleeping for an week from the contractions coming and going and looks like her little head is face up and stuck on my pelvis, so I've been working with my chiropractor, doing ball excercises, and spinning babies excercises to help her turn. I'm 4.5 cms and 80% effaced just not progressing.

My dr did give me an ambien and I slept for the most glorious 3 1/2 hours ever. Try taking a bath, resting a lot, you have a long way to go. I know it's stressful, try and take all that stress off your body and let your body go when it's ready. Good luck!
