My little girl Aspen Rayne was diagnosed with a two vessel cord at our 20 week ultrasound. It was not news we haven't heard before as our previous daughter was diagnosed with the same. So I knew that from week 32 on was going to be weekly NSTs.
She started out doing great with the first few NST we had done. Then she started to fail them, so we ended up having to start weekly BPPs. A few BPP went great (besides low fluids) and a few she failed. She just did not want to move as much as she should of in there. So when she failed I got to spend roughly 6 to 8 hours in L&D for more monitoring. Eventually she passed and I got to go home.
Finally the day had come for her to be born. On the day of 3/6/2015 I went into labor. It was a rough labor. They kept having to chase her to keep her on the monitor and her heart rate kept dipping with each contraction. After all that she entered into this world at 3:32 pm screaming her lungs off and with the cord wrapped around only her foot (thank God). She weighed 8 lbs 8 ozs and was 20 inches long. We got to lay skin to skin to a long time just cuddling and being as happy as can be. I am in love!
They started to test her blood sugar because she was big for her gestational age. It was low. So before every feeding they we pricking her little heal to test her sugar levels. They always came back low. They let me keep her with me in my room that first night. Just making sure that she ate every 3 hours and testing her sugars. They noticed she had labored breathing.
After a few hours her breathing never slowed so they took her to the NICU and hooked her up to IV fluids to help with the blood sugars and to watch her breathing. That's when they noticed that the oxygen level in her blood was low. So they did an echo of her heart. (I am an emotional wreck by this point). They spent hours looking at her heart and I spent hours pacing my room with no answers. They finally let me go in and see her and she stops breathing...
They had to incubate her. My world is crashing in front of me and there is not a thing I can do.
They ended up using life flight and flying her to Kansas City Children's Mercy Hospital. (Only an hour from where I live).
It is now around 1:20 am on 3/8/2015 when I finally arrive at the hospital. She is stabilized! After a long night her dad and I get about 4 hours of rest. When we go see her we get the news... they had done another echo of her heart and they are talking about things that I can't comprehend and things I don't want to hear. She needs heart surgery.
Turns out there are vessels in the heart that are attached to the wrong area and are dumping blood in the wrong area and mixing oxygenated blood with non oxygenated blood and her artery is narrowed.
Please pray for my angel.
Re: two vessel cord. (sad story)
Sending positive thoughts your way.....
It's terrifying when you're going through it but just take it hour by hour and don't forget to take care of yourself too momma (eat, rest, drink fluids). It's easy to forget that you just gave birth when your baby is sick.
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
