magnesium? is it safe? while pregnant?

Wondering if anyone takes magnesium by nature made and is it safe while pregnant? If yes what is the right dose? The reason I ask is because I was having headache and nerve pain so my neurologists told me to go buy magnesium 400mg at my local store to help and this way a month before I knew I was pregnant. I don't see my neurologists for a few weeks and don't have my first ob appointment for a while so if anyone can help me because I don't know if it's safe with the little one.

  • I will definitely be calling tomorrow. Thank you☺
  • Please let us know what the OB says. I think there is magnesium in some prenatals but I'm not sure what the recommended dosage is. I take a calcium/magnesium supplement and have just added the prenatal (no magnesium in mine) since becoming pregnant. I take a lower dosage than you but I will also ask the midwife at my first appt.

See some info below, but remember you should be easily getting this much magnesium if you are eating a healthy diet. But ask your doctor to be sure!

    How much magnesium you need

Pregnant women, 19 to 30 years of age: 350 milligrams (mg) of magnesium per day
Pregnant, 18 and younger: 400 mg
Pregnant, 31 and older: 360 mg
    Breastfeeding women, 19 to 30: 310 mg
Breastfeeding, 18 and younger: 360 mg
Breastfeeding, 31 and older: 320 mg

You don't have to get the recommended amount of magnesium every day. Instead, aim for that amount as an average over the course of a few days or a week.
  • I take a calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement 30 mins before bed nightly to help me sleep. My obgyn okayed it last pregnancy, and said it was better than taking melatonin to help sleep. Each pill has 166 mg of magnesium. But def check with your doctor first!

I take a daily 3-6-9 pill, but read on another board that you aren't supposed to take them while pregnant. Going to check with my doc this week before resuming!

Per my OB, it's safe up to 400 mg per day in pregnancy. It's a Class A drug. It's the only thing that has kept headaches away for me.

Here's a link with additional information.

  • @april42007 that's good to hear that it's safe. Thank you
  • @mamao  The brand is Webber Naturals, and I bought them at Target - in Canada though, so I'm not sure if they are in the US Targets?
