flu in the house.

So my youngest been running a fever. Today it was at 103°. After a visit to the Dr. He tested positive for the flu. ( he been coughing in my face when we go to sleep) his Dr. Freaked out. Saying to call my Dr. ASAP. That if I get it I could go into preterm labor.. Get phenomena ect. So I called my Dr. She said there is absolutely nothing they could do if I get it and they don't prescribe the tamiflu stuff to pregnant women. Soooo .. What helped you survive the flu? I never had it before. Any helpful ideas ?

  • I'm not sure but my coworker was just diagnosed with norovirus and now I'm paranoid as all get out. Sigh.

Wash your hands a lot and Lysol everything... Drink fluids and get rest... The flu itself is not dangerous it's the effect of the symptoms (e.g. Dehydration and fatigue and fever) so just take care of your self and leave as much as the caring for the sick child to someone else (as hard as that is!)
  • I wish I had some helpful ideas for you, but mostly I'm just sorry this is happening. To you, too @hoosonfirst. I guess with the flu all you really can do is suffer and try to drink a lot of water and rest up. See a dr if you begin to have bad chest congestion to hopefully stave off onset of pneumonia. Same for Norovirus, too. Isn't that the stomach bug that cruise passengers get? Lots of fluids and rest!

    Fingers crossed nobody gets sick!

Boo to the flu. My two had the flu a few months ago, and my OB prescribed tamiflu that night. I guess every OB is different. Lots of hand washing, lysol, etc. can your husband/SO keep your son quarantined from you?

    Should you get the flu:
I would recommend LOTS of fluid, and Tylenol to keep your fever down.
  • Sorry to hear it! Each OB obviously practices differently, but just for the sake of the members reading this thread that don't know much about Tamiflu... some OBs DO prescribe it for flu prevention in pregnant women with close contacts that have tested positive and/or for treatment it you test positive.

Wash those hands often!! I know it's probably tough to isolate yourself from your kid or wear a mask but you could do those things too. Hope you stay healthy!
  • I started feeling sick a few weeks ago and tried to build up my immune system by taking vitamin C and cooking garlic in everything especially chicken soup with bone broth. It wasn't flu and I did get better in a few days. I was concerned too though. Also drank lots of water.
  • I just went through the same thing! We all had the flu shot, but my 8 year old caught the influenza B, which wasn't covered by the shot. I immediately burst into tears because of all the horror stories I have seen on the news. Anyways, he was past 48 hrs, so it was too late for antibiotics and were instructed to treat the symptoms. The pediatrician put his 2 siblings on tamiflu, instructed me to get some from my doc, and my husband was put on it by his doctor. I am the one who has the ability to stay home to care for our son, so I called my OB doc and my luck, she didn't want to give it to to me because I had the flu shot and didn't have symptoms(it is actually not contraindicated during pregnancy). Low and behold 2 days later, symptoms show up. Of course the office closes early on Fridays and the ER was out of the question. So, I pretty much treated the symptoms just like I did for my son. I was miserable and bed ridden for approx 3 days, but I made sure I stayed hydrated and took tylenol to keep the fever down. I forced myself to eat and I ate lots of cuties (oranges for vitamin c). I am now fully recovered and baby is fine. You can bet I gave my doc a tongue lashing because the symptoms would have been less severe had she given me the tamiflu.

Sorry for the venting rant;) BTW, my daughter actually was not able to finish the tamiflu because the upset stomache/diarrhea side effects were bad for her. She had to stay home from school for a few days and we ended up stopping the treatment as per the doc.

Some doctors do not prescribe tamiflu while pregnant and I would trust that decision. I question doctors who would prescribe it to a pregnant woman without a positive test result to confirm the flu.

You are right, but the key word is "some" ;)

  • Small update.. My mother in law took the little sick guy for a few days. I feel terrible that I can't be there.. But I received a bubble bath picture... He looked sick.. But happy . ;) I realize how lucky I am to have her around.
  • If you do get it, you will probably show symptoms in 2-3 days. Tylenol for fever and lots of hydration. I had it about 3 weeks ago. My doctor okayed mucinex to help with chest congestion and tamiflu. I couldn't tolerate plain water but chugged Gatorade like it was going out of style. The worst thing for me is that mine turned into bronchitis and was trying to turn in pneumonia. I ended up on 10 days of zpack and breathing treatments.

Get plenty of rest. Hot steamy showers helped loosen up the chest congestions. Also, I had DH pound on my back while in a steamy shower to try to get the mucus out.

  • As a teacher, I was exposed to it numerous times in December, we had a quarter of the teachers get it and 10 to 20 percent of the kids. Luckily I didn't get it, which was shocking. I did end up with a horrible cold afterwards. But honestly I would pray you don't get it, your body may have built up immunities to it, but I know right now it's a waiting game. Just try and get as much sleep right now as possible so your body can fight it off.
