I am a little confused about adding my son to my insurance. I will be adding him to my medical but do people add their newborns to dental and vision right away or in the future (when in the future)?
I'll be interested to hear from other folks on this one. I honestly hadn't really thought about dental/vision for the baby. I'll probably just add her to those when she's older during an open enrollment period. As far as how old, not really sure.
I didn't add DS1 to dental until he was 3 bc the dentist didn't see him until he was 3. My vision plan is family so it didn't cost more to add him to that.
Depends on your enrollment period and is also a good question for your pedi. Our Pedi recommended DD to see a dentist by age 1. It's kind of a frivolous appointment as they wont do anything but count teeth and instruct you on proper oral care for baby. Vision I think was a little later, maybe 18 months or even 2. Her daycare offers free lion's club scans once a year so we have just done that so far. So I only carry medical and dental on her, which this baby will be added to right away because the premium is the same no matter the number of kids through my work.
Adding to dental and vision is a good idea since both are generally cheap, and you never know what problems you may run into. If you don't add right away, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment. If you baby has any dental/vision issues before then, you would be out whatever that costs. I know for lip and tongue ties for example, dental will sometimes cover some of those...
I plan to add to medical, dental, and vision but that's because I already have a family plan for each. Dental and vision is generally cheap so it may not be a bad idea just in case.
Ditto the above that vision enrolled automatically with medical. I was glad that that was the case because one of my twins was cross eyed and has seen/still sees a pediatric ophthalmologist and had surgery to uncross his eyes at 9 months. You just never know what LOs needs will be.

I work in health insurance and we also have a few plans that have dental and vision, and I know when they are automatically enrolled under health, they get the dental or vision if its on the plan.
even if it wasn't automatic I would add, just because if anything pops up sooner than I thought I would be ready. And not have to wait for an open enrollment period. I'm already s family plan for all of it so it's not anymore costly for me to add her to my plans.

This, I would check with your medical insurance provider. Some plans have a dental provision for their children's coverage, it may only cover emergency dental but that may be enough for 1 or 2 years. I know I knocked my two front teeth out at 18 months so I will make sure we at least have emergency dental coverage from the beginning.
Re: Adding newborn to insurance
Totally dependent on you and your families needs.
