Can I just add that they (as in the medical staff) may not allow a dim spa like setting as they are possibly stitching you up from a tear or cut if that happens to you... And for not so severe stuff they do need to see what is going on to Help you... so be prepared if they are not into your zen den.
I'm not the OP, I'm the PP. And yes, FTM. When someone says they are "laughing out loud" at something I want to bring to support my delivery, and then follow up comments make it sound like it will be a complete joke to nurses, I take that as offensive and rude, and completely unsupportive. Not "realistic." What items on my list make it sound like I'm going on a Mexican vacation? Candles? I've been on a Mexican vacation, and I can assure you, LED candles did not come with me. What else? Please elaborate on what you all think is unnecessary. I'd like to do the math to see exactly what adds up to 90%. I've asked this question in a previous comment, but no one has answered. The hospital I've chosen is similar to a birth center in that it specializes in women's health and childbirth, and they advertise the option to have lights dimmed, and most people choose this option. Rooms are private and peaceful. I've had several friends over time who have delivered at this hospital and have really enjoyed the experience. Their nurses were all friendly and extremely supportive to each one of my friend's individual needs and requests. Not sure what kind of house of horrors you all are delivering in, but don't tell me what my experience will be like, when you have no clue about the hospital I've chosen, or even who I am - second time mom, third time mom...or not. This is MY experience, and I will prepare for it the way I see fit. Feel free to suggest things that I might need, but do not tell me what I don't need.
OP, I don't think anyone is trying to be haters. Just realistic. You're a FTM, correct? If you want pack for delivery like you're going on a Mexican vacation, more power to you. I'm just saying, 90% of your list is not necessary. In my opinion, if you don't want the bright lights of the delivery room, and want it calm & peaceful, choose a birth center. I mean, just wait until you can hear the lady in labor next door. There is no calm & peace to a hospital delivery room.
I think it might be time for you to back away from the computer. You are free to bring as much or as little to the hospital as you like. I suspect that people might be getting a touch snarky because of how defensive you've been about your packing list throughout this entire thread. Your posts have come across as a bit combative - instead of having a little bit of FTM-humble pie and saying "it does look like a lot - I always overpack. What do you think I could/should leave at home?" and then dropping it, you've been consistently responding to EVERY poster who dares to say that they didn't end up needing very much and defending your packing list to death.
Just let it go - who CARES if someone else thinks you are being silly by bringing so much with you - you'll bring what you want. You're clearly not interested in entertaining the possibility of bringing less so no need to get all haughty with the STM/TTMs by challenging them to tell you precisely what they "think" you won't need (just so you can respond with all the reasons you MIGHT need it and therefore must bring it).
Can I just add that they (as in the medical staff) may not allow a dim spa like setting as they are possibly stitching you up from a tear or cut if that happens to you... And for not so severe stuff they do need to see what is going on to Help you... so be prepared if they are not into your zen den.
@elruby, see above. My hospital specializes in being down with my "zen den" experience, and they advertise their allowance of dim, spa-like settings. The plan I have set in place is for a trauma-free delivery, and I'm optimistic about having one. Obviously, if an emergency arises, things will change, and I am fine with doing whatever needs to be done for safety reasons. As for any post-delivery stitching, the nurses/docs can use all the light they need. My "zen den" candles are for labor.
That sounds wonderful... So happy you have found a place to accommodate your needs!
People make hospital deliveries sound like you have no options. Maybe some hospitals are like that but the hospital I am delivering at is wonderful at being accommodating to what the mom wants. I had a great experience there with my first even though I went in planning to go unmedicated and ended up with an epidural. The delivery rooms at my hospital are sound proof so you don't hear other mothers screaming while they are delivering! That sounds terrifying! And all the nurses were so nice, no one ever joked about how much crap I brought with me!
As a nurse, I can't get over the candles. I've never ever seen a patient bring candles but to each their own. I would check to see if they are even allowed honestly. My hospital offers dimmed lights which sounds great to me. Another thing to think about...hospitals are dirty. I want to bring the least amount of items that I have to worry about getting dirty/contaminated. For example, my slippers will be cheap ones I plan on throwing away. I don't walk in the door with my hospital shoes on! I haven't put much thought into a packing list but I figure I have some time!
@catalinasmama if you are confident in what you are bringing then it's a good and healthy idea to let it go and stop getting so overworked by comments... The majority of people seem to agree that less is more but if that's not what you feel just do your own thing and stop criticizing people or grouping the whole board as "bitchy". It is not very zen.
@elruby - Who did I criticize? And I didn't group the whole board...just "90%."
Well for starters you called me and @mamahawk12 "haters" for experiencing a genuine human emotion (it was funny to picture candles after being through labor before). No one insulted you directly.
Good vibes to you @catalinasmama ....maybe it's time we all let this thread drop...seems like we've explored the topic. I'm gonna go light some LED candles now...ok I couldn't help myself there...but he'll yeah pack for a Mexican vacation...or just bring a single onsie and a car seat...I love that I get to hear about all the different approaches...makes me feel human and sane so thanks to all the ladies who contributed. Let's not be the September 15 board.
@elruby: So sorry to have "criticized" you for laughing at my preference to bring candles to the birth of my child. Did I hurt your feelings?? MY BAD. mamahawk12 "literally laughed out loud" and you followed it up with comments about candles being a "shop talk" joke conversation behind mom's back. Sounds like you insulted me directly, since I'm the only one on the thread who said anything about bringing candles.
@mrswigglewaggle...I'm not checking back on this thread after this. And thank you.

@mommyof3tooooobe - I postulate that the two maxi dresses are different colors, and she won't know which one she'll want to wear home until she is getting ready that day. You can't really expect someone to know what mood they'll be in so far in advance, can you?

Hopefully the flip flops will go with either choice.... But what if it's raining?!
Save your linens (receiving blankets) utilize the hospitals, even if your hospital doesn't give a lot of supplies (very sad), they at least will supply linen (baby shirts and blankets) just bring one for baby to go home in
It seems there are a lot of other issues going on here. "Overpacking" may just be some mamas' way of feeling prepared and comfortable, relieving as much stress as possible in a potentially stressful situation. I think it is pretty widely accepted that reducing stress and fear and increasing comfort during labor has a huge impact on a positive and smooth birth experience, so if packing everything you think you could need crosses one more source of stress off the list, there is no arguing that it's a good thing! So many other factors may be out of our control on that day, so if we feel like we at least came prepared for anything, it could put us at ease. The other issue mentioned was along the lines of "if you want a calm environment, go to a birthing center". This response saddens me not only because it perpetuates the idea that all hospitals are nightmarish (natural births in a hospital setting do happen and are beautiful as well!) but also because not everyone gets to choose their birth location. Whether due to insurance coverage or proximity or a number of other factors, sometimes you must make the best of what is available to you, so bringing in a few items that alter the mood of the place and again increase comfort is not outrageous at all! ( sorry for the length!)
My hospital is an hour from home so I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to overpack because I won't want my husband to have to leave my side to go get anything. I already mentioned this morning we need to find someone to feed our cat (we are new to the area we live in)...

Cats are very self sufficient.... You can leave extra food and they will not over eat... Also leave a second litter box and you really don't need anyone to check in on them.... Your cat will probably not even realize you are gone hahahhaha

Momma to Garrett (8) Makenna(4) Jordynn (3) & Madilynn (2)
I overpacked last time and what was annoying to me was to have all this extra stuff just hanging out in the small room.
I'm having a c-section and planning on a 5 day hospital stay. My husband will be staying at home at nights with our 4.5 yr old boys.
Here's my list:
Phone/charger Kindle Robe (last time this was all I wore, especially nice when you are walking the halls after delivery) PJs (2-maybe a shirt like Grandma type thing) Socks with non skid soles Going home outfit (dress) Toiletries (shampoo, soap, razor, face wipes, make up, hair dryer, tooth brush, toothpaste, lip balm) My own pillow
I'll use hospital pillows to help me nurse. My hospital provided everything else (lanolin cream, nipple shields, breast pump to get my supply up...again I had twins)
Baby Going home outfit
DH Nothing
This time I'm going to be using a small roller type luggage instead of a duffle bag. I only live 10 minutes from the hospital, so not a huge deal if my husband or Mom have to run home and get something.
I'm also going to bring Clorox wipes. I liked to wipe off my little table every so often. I also felt it helped freshen up the room when it felt stuffy/smelly.
As a FTM, I totally over packed for my ds. This time around, I know less is more. I had to have a c-section last time and was in the hospital for 4 days. I'm expecting a repeat c-section this time too, so planning another 4 days there. We only live 5 minutes from the hospital, so no big deal if people have to run for stuff. Last time my hubby had to take home all of our stuff and then come back for us because it didn't all fit in one trip.
Items I didn't use: *Ipod and speaker - each room has a tv so had music on that *Too many clothes *Too many snacks. Our hospital has a snack room on the OB floor, so had yogurt, ice cream, toast, juice and snack bars on hand. *lots of baby clothing. only need a couple onesies and a going home outfit. *pump. Didn't use it until I got home. *Pads and lots of undies. The hospital provided the pads and mesh undies. They also sent a large care package of them home with me. *Diapers and wipes. The hospital supplied them and sent some home too. *Blanket. The hospital had plenty and didn't use mine.
Things I will take this time: *Cell phone and charger *A robe for walking halls before and after birth. Hospital gowns don't close in back. *A nightgown for after delivery. One set of sweat pants and a tank. *Slippers with grips on bottom for walking halls. *Nursing bra and breast pads. *Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, mascara *My boppy pillow. I'm having twins and think it'll really help when feeding both together. *Ipad and charger for my 2 year old to play with when he's up there. *Camera with new batteries and new memory card.
*A couple onesies for each twin *Going home outfits
*A night outfit for my hubby. He will stay with me overnight to help with the twins. *His phone and charger so he can call family. *Pop for him *Deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste. He'll go home to shower.

I wish I would have brought my twin nursing pillow, just to have the lactation consultant show me how to use it. However, my boys (and a lot of my friends twins) were too small to use it effectively. Most of my friends,it took about a month to get the hang of feeding both at the same time
And seriously, be super nice to your nurses! Mine hooked me up with a bunch of free diapers and formula. I think we had a trunk full of diapers and formula
Last time I brought really beautiful pajamas .... But there is A LOT of blood and this time I am bringing dark comfy pants that I am not attached to ... And use the hospital provided items as much as possible .... Mine actually provided normal robes in addition to the gowns which was great for walking the halls.
Whatever you do, don't forget your shower shoes/non slip flipflops! Those shower floors would be glowing bright blue if you took a black light to them....gross.
LOL, it's a hospital!! They will not have charmin 2 ply super soft toilet paper. You will have a peri squirt bottle and sitz baths anyways. Bringing toilet paper is completely unnecessary IMO.
Haven't even thought about it! But we will probably overpack since we overpack whenever we travel! Off the top of my head though I think we will bring phone chargers (x2), hairtyes for sure, yoga pants, a maxi dress to go home, oneies, sports bra, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, toothbrush/toothpaste, a cute going home outfit for baby girl, and who knows what else my husband thinks of!
Boppy . Nursing bra. Nursing pads. Pads. Going home clothes. Socks. Hairpins / ties Diapers. Snacks Baby blankets Burp rags
Dad can bring whatever. Lol
5TM
I was only checking this to see if the drama was over but have to comment on the hair ties. The only two must have things on my list are pajama bottom & sports bras I'm willing to throw out ad about a dozen spare hair ties. Labor is nasty and I'm ready for it this time but if I have to puke for 5 hours straight and have constant back labor for days I'm sure as shit not doing it with my hair down. I'll make those nurses shave my head or put me under general before I let that happen. I'm laughing as I write down my worst fear of the last hair band breaking . . . like the nurses wouldn't provide a rubber band. I think the moral of this is if you roll up to the hospital with just the clothes on our back, you'll be okay. People will be there to help you and take care of you, nothing on the pack list will be more important than that.
Boppy . Nursing bra. Nursing pads. Pads. Going home clothes. Socks. Hairpins / ties Diapers. Snacks Baby blankets Burp rags
Dad can bring whatever. Lol

Haha! I do remember having my Mom run to Target to get me more hair bands.

My hair is to the middle of my back... No way I'm going in there with that hair just in its full glory. Sweating.. Wet rags... Possible vomiting... I agree with you I'd shave it before I go at it " alone " lol
Re: Must Have Hospital List
Just let it go - who CARES if someone else thinks you are being silly by bringing so much with you - you'll bring what you want. You're clearly not interested in entertaining the possibility of bringing less so no need to get all haughty with the STM/TTMs by challenging them to tell you precisely what they "think" you won't need (just so you can respond with all the reasons you MIGHT need it and therefore must bring it).
That sounds wonderful... So happy you have found a place to accommodate your needs!

My hospital is an hour from home so I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to overpack because I won't want my husband to have to leave my side to go get anything. I already mentioned this morning we need to find someone to feed our cat (we are new to the area we live in)...
Soon to be Momma to Elliott ( 06.04.15 or sooner)
I'm having a c-section and planning on a 5 day hospital stay. My husband will be staying at home at nights with our 4.5 yr old boys.
Here's my list:
Phone/charger
Kindle
Robe (last time this was all I wore, especially nice when you are walking the halls after delivery)
PJs (2-maybe a shirt like Grandma type thing)
Socks with non skid soles
Going home outfit (dress)
Toiletries (shampoo, soap, razor, face wipes, make up, hair dryer, tooth brush, toothpaste, lip balm)
My own pillow
I'll use hospital pillows to help me nurse. My hospital provided everything else (lanolin cream, nipple shields, breast pump to get my supply up...again I had twins)
Baby
Going home outfit
DH
Nothing
This time I'm going to be using a small roller type luggage instead of a duffle bag. I only live 10 minutes from the hospital, so not a huge deal if my husband or Mom have to run home and get something.
I'm also going to bring Clorox wipes. I liked to wipe off my little table every so often. I also felt it helped freshen up the room when it felt stuffy/smelly.
Items I didn't use:
*Ipod and speaker - each room has a tv so had music on that
*Too many clothes
*Too many snacks.
Things I will take this time:
*Cell phone and charger
*A robe for walking halls before and after birth. Hospital gowns don't close in back.
*A nightgown for after delivery. One set of sweat pants and a tank.
*Slippers with grips on bottom for walking halls.
*Nursing bra and breast pads.
*Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, mascara
*My boppy pillow. I'm having twins and think it'll really help when feeding both together.
*Ipad and charger for my 2 year old to play with when he's up there.
*Camera with new batteries and new memory card.
*A couple onesies for each twin
*Going home outfits
*A night outfit for my hubby. He will stay with me overnight to help with the twins.
*His phone and charger so he can call family.
*Pop for him
*Deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste. He'll go home to shower.
Nursing bra.
Nursing pads.

I'm also in the bring-100-hair ties camp. I'm OCD even now about having one on my wrist at all times!
