Re: Low iron

  • What did your doctor say? Did they recommend you go on an iron supplement? Since you are wowrried, you should call them back and ask.

  • She said to come and to see the ob I think to have me some vitamins , and for a special blood test idk
  • I have had low iron all of my pregnancies even though I eat plenty of iron rich foods. She will probably recommend some vitamins. It's pretty common in pregnancy.
  • This happened to me too! Did your OB/nurse not give you any info on low iron or how to treat it? If so, that was very rude to leave you hanging. My iron wasn't TOO low below the cutoff so they're letting me try out some dietary changes first. I'm not a huge fan of red meat, but am now eating it 2 times a week due to the high iron. Spinach smoothies in the morning with almond milk, a banana, peanut butter, and a little frozen mango. Oatmeal with almond milk is good too. No diary with your iron! It hinders your body's ability to absorb it, which makes sense why my results came back low because I love milk! Drink something like orange juice instead, vitamin C helps promote iron absorption. Hence the mango in my spinach smoothies. If that doesn't up my numbers they told me to take 325mg of ferrous sulfate and I can get that over the counter. Also, gummy prenatals are no good when it comes to iron content. Of course talk to your OB before taking any supplements, but that's what I was told to do if changing up my diet doesn't help.

  • Mine suggested I start taking Floradix (Floravital) in my first trimester and throughout pregnancy because mine was just below the cut off. She said that liquid iron is easier to absorb than a pill... And no upset tummy either!
  • During my last pregnancy I had to take an iron supplement ... No biggie... So far I haven't needed them with this pregnancy.
  • Thank u so much jilly 159 . Of course I would talk to him but u really gave me some help for what to eat

You're welcome :) Hopefully you can up your numbers with some simple changes. Like someone else mentioned, my OB said iron supplements might upset my stomach so that's another reason why they're letting try this first. I'm hoping I don't have to take one! Good luck!

  • No tea when you're taking iron supplements either! The tannins in tea affect the absorption of iron too!
  • If you're taking an iron supplement as your doctor about a stool softener or mild laxative like Miralax. (Iron supplements can stop you up!)
  • I had low iron with my first and yes u will most likely need to increase fiber!!! I had terrible constipation once I started iron pills.

  • My doc says low iron is more the rule than the exception nowadays - ie most pregnant women have it at some point.
  • Also have low iron. Found out 2 weeks ago. The nurse at my docs office called me at work freaking saying I needed to leave work and come in immediately. I thought it had some thing to do with my sugar cause I did that test first of that week. And all she kept saying was my blood was low. Had me freaked out since this is my first. Got there and they said my iron was too low. I should of been passing out, freezing cold And dizzy. He put me on iron pills, I asked about changing my diet but he said no because where I was slightly overweight he didn't want me to turn around and gain a whole bunch so put me on the pills. So far so good. Haven't made me sick, have made me slightly constipated. Not liking it but dealing with it.
  • I have always been slightly anemic but my obs office recommends after 20 weeks that everyone takes an iron supliment so I've been taking one for the last few weeks! Just want to make sure you increase your fiber as well!
  • I just found out this week that I'm slightly anemic. They told me to take a slow release iron supplement along with vitamin c. They told me to take it at a different time of day than I take my prenatal vitamin. They also mentioned a stool softener such as Colace.
  • I have low iron and my Dr. gave me an iron supplement. Definitely up your fiber intake. I've been eating some Activia every morning and adding some Benifiber to my water. Good luck at the Dr. :)
