Plus Size Moms!

I can't find a forum on this month club for plus size moms.  I was a size 16/18 pre-pregnancy.  I have had a perfectly normal pregnancy but I feel like some of my doctors (in a large practice with many doctors) make me feel a lot worse than others.  I have only gained 6-8 pounds depending on the day and am 28.5 weeks.  Anyone else want to speak about their plus size pregnancy?!  I need some momma support!

Re: Plus Size Moms!

  • I was a size 14 before pregnant and have gained 25 pounds. I am almost 29 weeks. My doctor has said nothing to me about weight gain. I do not have GD or any other issues...just a bigger mom. I am only in an 18 now and feel like I am ginormous, but my doctor still doesn't say anything or suggest a diet of any sort. You're fine. You're pregnant and carrying a baby. That's beautiful in itself. :0)

  • I was a size 14 prior to pregnancy. I have lost over 20 lbs during pregnancy ( not sure how )and still maintaining that weight. My GD test came back fine and my doctor isn't concerned about the weight loss because I have "reserves" as he so nicely put it. The problem I have is with the general public making comments like "please tell me you're having twins"
  • I was a 14/16 with my DD and gained like 60lbs...my doctor never said a word. I managed to lose all but 10lbs before this pregnancy. Now I am pregnant with twins and have only gained 20lbs...way behind where I should be but again my doc has said nothing. The babies are growing good and I am healthy (no gd or HBP) so nothing to worry about. I would say try to eat healthy for you and the baby and don't worry about the weight.
  • I was a UK 24 (!) pre pregnancy and I'm happy to say that I'm still wearing those clothes ;)

My docs spent ages telling me how many risks I pose, how baby will probably need intervention etc but *touch wood* BABY IS PERFECTLY HEALTHY.

BP is normal, no swelling, urine fine, baby's growth normal (25th percentile)... So ner ner to them. The only major complaint I have is sciatica but "normal size" women get that too.

I'm just nodding and smiling at this stage.
  • I was a 14/16 pre-pregnancy and have gained 15lbs to date. I'm 31w3d. My doc only told me that as long as I don't lose weight while also getting sick, he didn't care. I was just told that past the 25-35lbs, any weight would be added to me and not be bc of the baby.
As far as other people- they are amazed at how big my belly is when I show a pic or stand a certain way. I wear bigger t-shirts to work and that's where the comments come from!
Easier said than done, but don't pay attention to those making the nasty comments. Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, don't let some random jerk ruin the fun!
  • I'm about a size 18/20. Started out about 30 lbs overweight. I haven't gained any weight since this began, I had lost some. I go next Wednesday for glucose test. I hope that all goes well. I've been hoping not to blow up so maybe everything stays good.
  • I was and still am a size 16. I've only gained 8 pounds since I found out I was pregnant, and I'm 31 weeks. I wouldn't worry what others think, because I've learned through research that you'll lose about 10-20 pounds at birth, with about 8 pounds being baby. Everyone is different. My doctor isn't worried, and she tells me everything is normal.
Keep your chin up, and smile!
  • Started off size 18 or a 3x 307 lbs lost 10 lbs first trimester today im 30 weeks 3 days and I've only gained 3 lbs no GD or HBP baby is amazing i did change the way that I eat though more fruits and vegetables intake and also more water
  • I like to look at the bright side. Normally my tummy is the part I hate. Being pregnant is totally opposite. I get to enjoy having a big tummy.
I also eat so much better while pregnant and take much better care of myself. I hope to keep it up after this baby! We will see! I didn't with the the first.
Try not to worry about weight gain. The baby needs to grow! Just be as healthy as you can!

  • I can relate. I started pregnancy medically obese at about 185lbs and 5'5. I am 30 weeks and have gained 6lbs so far. I go to a doctor's office that I rotate doctors and every one of them seems to make a big deal about how it's so important I don't gain weight.

It can definitely be discouraging :(
  • I'm plus size too and I really hated my 2nd doctors appointment. My doctor was a huge bitch about my weight and didn't want me to gain a single pound. I've gained anyway.

I also developed gestational diabetes which is terrible, but until I found out about that my pregnancy was going along wonderfully.

I got a call today and was told now I've got to start seeing a high risk doctor though, so not excited about that.

  • I started my pregnancy 30lbs over weight and have since gained a little more than 20lbs. My doctor has stated that she anticipates a total weight gain of 30lbs, but I think I've made a bigger deal about my weight gain than she has. I was fortunate enough that I passed my glucose test, which shocked me, given my family history.
  • I was a size 16/18 prepregnancy and still am. I've gained 6 pounds so far and I am 30 weeks and 3 days. My doctors say they have no concerns about my weight.
  • I was plus size before ever becoming pregnant. Now, expecting twins, I've gained an additional 30-35 pounds at 31 weeks. Totally normal and nothing my doctor is concerned with. BP is ok, no diabetes, and urine is fine. HOWEVER, there is a huge bitch I work with that won't stop commenting to myself and behind my back about my weight!!! Anyone else have problems like this? And what did you do about it? It's very hurtful!

She's probably just jealous of you! I'd tell her to her face that every time she talks about me and my weight it just magnifies her jealousy of my pregnancy and my happiness!

You should flat out tell her to stop talking about your body. You will almost certainly feel better if you do. Just remember she is the inappropriate one here, you have the right to defend yourself.
  • Punch her in the nose :-D
  • Wonder why she's so bothered by your weight you need to set her straight....
  • I was a size 24 going into my pregnancy lost 40 lbs in the first 7 mos and only gained back two. Im ecstatic for the weightloss but i dont look pregnant and that bothers me. I share my news with clients and tell them im 30 weeks and they just kinda half smile like they dont believe me. But not having to buy maternity clothes yeah thats a plus!
  • I was larger going into pregnancy ( a 14/16) but have only put on 12 lbs since. I've always carried my weight in the "good" places-- breasts, butt, thighs, and not belly. Now I have a huge belly. Like @jasonsgirl94 , I get really frustrated when people tell me I look small/ don't look pregnant. I feel huge and what did they think I looked like before?
  • Last time I started at 170 and gained over 60 lb. Doctor and nutritionist gave me a hard time but I didn't care :p. I was sick of dieting and I was going to eat whatever I wanted! Pregnancy was picture perfect, and baby was healthy and happy. I had way more trouble losing it than I anticipated, though....
This time I started at 195. I beat them to the punch and asked about weight gain at my first appointment. Doc set a very optimistic goal of "gain 15 lb" (I'm guessing she figured I'd go over whatever she said so she aimed low). I've already passed that but am still under 20! Which I'm pretty sure I had already gained in the first trimester, last time. So I'm feeling pretty good about myself! No GD, everything is going well, again.

I do *hate* getting the "You don't even look pregnant!" comments. How fat did you think I was before?! I got that nonstop last time. Thankfully not so much this time!

  • I'd lost 133lbs in the year and a half prior to getting pregnant, and was sitting at a size 14 when I got pregnant.  28 weeks in I've gained 15lbs, and none of my doctors are concerned.  I'm also not really looking pregnant - the baby is mostly just pushing a roll of loose skin up, giving me a nice, big, love handle!  I do work out too though, so I know the ab muscles are holding things in a bit yet.  Size wise, I'm just wearing some size 18 pants I saved from my clothes purging, knowing (hoping) I might need them.  One of the doctors did say I might pack on weight a little more because my body still had the 'memory' of being heavier, but what happens happens!  I think as long as you're eating well, and trying to be active, it's all good!
  • I was a size 14/16 pre-prego and although I lost 10 pounds then gained 25 the dr has pit me in the obese catagory...didn't make me feel the greatest to be honest. I don't know why but a lot of foods still taste nasty to me and have trouble eating them. :(
  • I have always been plump. Before I got pregnant I wore a 15/16. I'm 29 weeks now and have gained almost 20 pounds. My doctor never says anything about my weight and to be honest it's best that she don't. My temper has been bad lately lol. >:)
  • I'm size 14/16, about 5'7...almost 29 weeks only gained 1 pound throughout entire pregnancy, no gest diabetes or swelling. I eat good, yet don't know if it's because I'm in school and have twelve hour clinical shifts at hospital keeping me busy. Dr says to keep it up
