Trying to Get Pregnant

Robitussin.

My husband and I have been actively ttc our first for a year, but haven't been using protection since we got married in 2010.  I have an HSG scheduled for Monday and should ovulate about a week after that. I plan on using OPK, pom. juice, pre-seed, soft cups and Robitussin ( I've been doing a lot of research) lol.  I was wondering if anyone had any luck with any of these things and also Dosage on the Robitussin. Also, when to start taking the Robitussin.

Thank you

Re: Robitussin.

  • Why the hell would you use a soft cup after sex? The swimmers you want are headed where they need to go. No need to try and trap them in there. It's also a UTI waiting to happen. if it's been a year, time to see an RE.

Granted, I'm new here...but what's the point of Robitussin? Do you have a chest cold?

  • I thought a UTI occurs in the urinary tract. You can pee with the soft cup in so I think that could fix that problem. I read that it keeps them up where they need to be. I know that the go where they need to be automatically but I figure the more the merrier! I've read a lot of what women who have been struggling to conceive have tried and they seem to say it works so I figured why not. Plus I don't make a lot of CM so I read that if you put the pre-seed in the cup and insert it then that will help with that problem. I just always thought it would happen by now and I'm getting antsy so ill try anything that would help, that wouldn't cause me any harm obviously. I am seeing a gyno right now that's who is doing the HSG.

  • It is supposed to thin out your cm.

    Loosens mucous.

OP, the soft cup is unnecessary and a UTI waiting to happen. There's an ingredient in Robitussin, starts with a G?, you want to avoid that.
  • LOL I don't think a UTI occurs in your cervix.  Yea its called Guaifenesin:

" The theory is that guaifenesin, the expectorant found in cough syrups, thins and loosens cervical mucus the same way it does the mucus in your lungs when you are sick. Experts also believe that guaifenesin may also help men with thick semen in the same way as women. Although there is little scientific evidence that supports this claim, there is abundant anecdotal evidence of its effectiveness"

  • I think I might have asked this question on the wrong website

I had heard that too. But you don't want to thin out your CM. Your CM is what keeps the sperm alive. It shouldn't be thinned out.

I'm so sorry for your struggle, but none of that stuff is going to get you pregnant at this point. You need to pull out the big guns and get a full fertility work up and treatment plan.

Since you have been not using protection for over a year, you should contact your insurance company about going directly to an RE. I'm sure you like your OB. But Obs just don't have the right training for infertility.

    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)

  • Yea I have been reading lately that the RE is more reliable than the gyno. I think if everything looks well and we still don't get pregnant after the HSG I am going to go talk to one. My gyno has done some ultra sounds and did an SIS and everything looks good but I do have a cyst on my left ovary. He wants to do a lap but I think im going to go see an RE before we do that.

I know some of the things I want to try seem silly but I have read a lot of forums where they have been a simple fix to the problem and I don't want to jump into surgery. IDK maybe I've just been reading into other people success stories to much. Pulling at strings here lol

Thank you Theborg7of9 for your helpful advise. I've just been going a little crazy with baby fever lately and just wanted some positive input.

  • Here's the deal, you shouldn't take medicine for off label uses unless prescribed by a doctor.  If you already have EWCM, then thinning your CM actually makes it less fertile.

As for the lap issue, wait and talk to a RE before deciding on a lap.  Personally if I had to have a lap, I would want it to be done by a RE and not an OB anyway (I am actually considering requesting a lap if this FET fails, just because I haven't had one done and I want to rule out any potential issue before moving on to donor eggs), since a RE will know more about how any issue found during the lap will effect your fertility.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • I'm at 18 cycles without getting pregnant.  My RE was frank with me - my chances of getting pregnant right now sit at 5%.  All my tests came back normal and I'm currently unexplained infertility, but clearly something is wrong and their tests haven't found it yet.  It's time to read about progesterone, estrogen, follicular stimulating hormone, ovarian egg reserve, and endometeriosis.  This isn't a time for soft cups and robitussin.

Im sorry to hear about the unexplained infertility, my cousin (which is my dads twins daughter) is having trouble with unexplained fertility too. It really scares me to think about so I try not to. I have had all the blood work done all came back good. Progesterone levels were fine (indicating that I had ovulated). One of the intra-vaginal ultra sounds showed that I had ovulated. The doctor said everything (other than the cyst, which is why he wanted to do the lap) looks good and there isn't any reason ( if its a functioning cyst) that we should not be getting pregnant . I read that the Robitussin helps make your cm more sperm friendly and easier to move through ( I don't usually have an abundance of EWCM around O) and the soft cups to keep more sperm moving up into the uterus.

I appreciate your everyone's help. But I was pretty specific in my questions in my original post. I didn't ask for a second doctors opinion. I read things that I want to try ( that many, many women try, successfully )  I was wanting there opinion on how they did these methods. I have read many on this website and I was hoping maybe for there input pertaining to the question. If you think its crazy that's fine, just don't respond.

  • I don't think they did. I asked for someone who did any of this had any luck . And if they did have luck how much they took and when they started.
  • edited March 2015
No one gave you a "doctor's second opinion" because as far as I know, there aren't any doctors here.

My opinion is that I have not used Robitussin or any other cough suppressant/expectorant for the purposes of TTC because it seems counterintuitive to thin out the fluid that is supposed to help sperm live and travel to its destination. I take Robitussin or Mucinex when I have a chest cold or persistent cough And truthfully, I would encourage you not to use "anecdotal" evidence when it comes to this stuff.

    Good luck on your journey.

  • Ok. The answer is, yes, many people have tried it. No, it didn't get them pregnant. Even if they did happen to get pregnant when they tried it, it was not because of the cough medicine or softcups. What worked to get me pregnant was 2 years of unprotected sex, a full fertility work up for me and my husband from an RE, one miscarriage, one cancelled clomid cycle due to over response, 6 months of hormone treatment for my husband from a urologist, and one Iui.

  • Okay I just went ahead and called my Dr. and he said to go ahead and start taking the 2 tsp of the Robitussin twice a day starting 10dpo. If anyone else got on this thread looking for an actual answer .

Geeze. I thought women were supposed to stick together. Wont be posting here again

  • Idk man.. maybe I'm just not deep enough into baby fever for this to seem logical to me, because from where I stand, if it's been a year quit wasting time and go see an RE.  Soft cups and 4 tsp of cough medicine per day sounds like a bunch of nonsense.

I mean good luck to you, OP, but... *smh*

Are you kidding me?  You are looking for bandaids when you need stitches.

We are giving you valuable, honest advice.  I'm sorry it's not what your precious sensibilities wanted to hear, but it's sound, proper, and well-intentioned advice.

EDIT: How can you NOT see that this is ME, helping YOU see the light?  Just because I have a vagina doesn't mean that I'm in some gang with you, but I'm trying to help you out of the goodness of my heart and the road that I have traveled.  We all are.  You saying that we're just being rude and not helpful is a slap in the face.
  • yes I called and told him what I read specifically and he told me what I can do . Are you on here just to bully people?

This is just out of hand . I didn't say it would fix my fertility I just thought it would help with my cervical mucus . I don't think that I am sticking my head in the sand . The doctor said that we can still get pregnant if we were trying, I was just trying to boost the odds in my favor .

  • So I said I was considering seeing and RE, my husband and I aren't allowed to try things before that? I'm not stupid or naive I know that if there is something seriously wrong then I would have to do more then the things I listed above . But if the doctor is saying its not a total loss to try and I have read some very good things about the things I listed then I think I should be able to try . this is honestly the first time I have ever posted anywhere about ttc and I just wanted some oppinions from the women who have tried these things before .

Taking it after ovulation won't help you. It is supposed to be taken before.

ETA: From reading this thread, I don't think anyone was bullying you.

@hello8529 I would like to add that I have tried both softcups, preseed and it did nothing for me.  And I used mucinex as well.  Still not pregnant.
  • I was looking for someone to say either yes ive tried it and it worked! or yes i've tried it don't waste your time. I wasn't looking for anyone to tell me that if I take it ill get pregnant end of story. I just wanted an opinion from someone who has tried it. and you can report me that is fine if me asking you if you are a bully offended you .I even said if you haven't tried it and think its crazy don't respond. Thank you everyone for trying to help . ill keep my head in the sand.

I am sorry for your struggle in conceiving . I know how it feels . I hope you get a beautiful baby soon.

  • Thank you! I was starting to think I was the only one who had heard of this. I meant cd not dpo, sorry. Sorry it didn't work for you i hope it happens soon.
  • ill give it a shot and not get my hopes to high. just knowing we tried something different from all the not conceiving cycles gives me hope. I've heard the HSG can make you more fertile also.

    Fingers crossed!

I would assume if your tubes are blocked it can help unblock it but even then many women have open tubes and still haven't been pregnant.
  • yea, I am hoping that that's all it is. (but aren't we all)  I am just dreading the thought of doing the whole fertility treatment.

I've only seen my gyno about infertility a few times so I'm new to this.

  • He said it was fine to try but if it does dry me up we wont try it again. I think I'm going to look into a RE. I guess I just thought of the fertility treatment as a down the road thing. My husband always says it'll happen when its supposed to but it hasn't been happening and its worrying me.

I just saw this . I'm sorry for your loss. I guess I just got defensive because I didn't realize the struggle some women go through. I haven't made it that far yet. I think its wonderful you had a healthy baby.
