When to stop working!?!?

I am currently 25 weeks with twins (but measuring as if I was 32 weeks) and I have a couple questions about when to stop working!

I am an elementary teacher, so there is no possibility of working from home. I got married this school year, so I wasted all my sick/personal days on the wedding/honeymoon before we found out I was pregnant! So there is NO possibility of me stopping working unless my doctor puts me on disability.

So under what circumstances will a doctor put you on disability? Do I have to have some kind of complication, like a shortened cervix or preeclampsia? I am technically a high risk pregnancy because it's twins, but no other issues so far. Anyone else talk to their doctor about when they can stop working?? I just feel like I am STRUGGLING at this point. I can't sleep and my job requires me to be on my feet all day long and deal with 20 children.

Help! Advice?

  • I don't know the answer as to the doc giving you a note for disability, but I totally get what your going through. Being up and about on the tile floors all day with 20+ kids who need your undivided attention from the moment they walk in is tough. I teach as well and it's all I can do every day to be there and stay there. I actually cried the whole way home tonight simply because I was so exhausted.

  • I'm not carrying twins (God bless those who do), but my doctor told me that I can teach as long as I feel up to it.

It might be a question for your union as well. My union informed me that if I have to leave early for any reason and do not have enough time to cover my absence, that I can submit a request to the board asking to use days that people "donate" to the sick bank.

I am a Pk-2 music teacher, so I definitely understand the "will I be able to do this toward the end" dilemma. Rest as much as possible. My kiddos are really good at helping me get out and put away equipment and supplies. Maybe you can enlist your kiddos too.
  • Doctors are different so ask yours and see how it goes. I asked mine early on how soon she would consider it and she said not until after 30 weeks. Around 27 weeks I had some preterm labor signs and she signed me out right away. Hope that helps!
