Driving solo...?

DH and I are at odds on this one. I have a big client presentation to deliver tomorrow at the client's offices about 20km away - a 15 minute drive on the highway and one I have done many a time. Hubby came home today telling me he doesn't want me to drive alone for fear that I will go into labour on the highway. I feel totally fine and tried to explain that labour is a progression and that I would never drive if contractions got that bad but he's insistent and is now talking about taking the day off work so he can drive me then waiting outside for an hour or more while I meet the client. I love him for caring and worrying so much but am struggling with the logic here....
How many of you are still getting behind the wheel to commute to work or even for short trips?

Re: Driving solo...?

  • Lol it's cute that he's so worried but a 15 minute drive is hardly a "commute" even if t was an hour, you'll
Probably have time to drive home or to the hospital
    If labor starts!
I'm still driving 20 min every day plus longer drives for errands and "nesting" ! Lol

  • Still commuting, but my SO starts his leave before I do, so that he can be around in case anything happens. It's sweet, but definitely not necessary. Cannot complain when there are guys out there that do not care at all.
  • Still driving back and forth to work everyday where I work alone with special needs individuals on nightshift so for 11 hours a day I won't be able to do anything immediately if my water breaks
  • That's really considerate of him. I hadn't even thought about not driving, but I can see where he's coming from. I guess I just assumed you'd have plenty of time once labor started to get home before the contractions got too intense. I'm still driving 20 minutes to work and back everyday and my due date is in 4 days.
  • Still commuting about 45 mins from home, 1 hr from the hospital. I did the same with my first. It's sweet that he's worried.

I make an hour drive alone three times a week minimum still .. Last time I went into labor with my first I was over an hour away from home and drove myself home in labor... Mind you I only had a 5.5 hour labor and delivery. Pretty quick considering! Now... I wouldn't recommend it. Lol. But I think you'll probably be just fine. :)
  • Still driving...I'm 37.4 weeks! I'm working until 39 weeks. Once I am on mat leave, I hope not to drive...maybe just short distances if u really need to!
  • I live in an area where most stores are 15 min away, so this sounds like nothing. I drive myself 30-45 min one way to the dr once a week. I'm 39 weeks. If you're having contractions, just don't drive.
  • Thanks all for the feedback! It is sweet that he cares so much, though I'm glad to know I'm not crazy!

@adelems - now that certainly puts things into perspective! Hope you don't have to make that drive in labour this time around!
  • I spend more time driving to and from work every day than that. Not once have I felt that it was unsafe of me to do physically. Hell, I might drive us to the hospital since the baby carrier is in my car.

  • I think it's cute. I started leave on Monday at 39 weeks. 3 shifts earlier than I had planned but had pretty regular contractions monday, 45 minute drive one way to work and my office was 2 hours from hospital! Of course since then haven't had much of anything!
  • That's cute. I do a 3 hour commute every sunday to exchange my kids, my husband is starting to get uneasy about it. If im feeling crappy or what not he tells me to get ahold of their dads and say too bad they need to wait until he's done with work.
  • I drive about 1.5 hour round trip to work every day and I'm 37 weeks tomorrow. I wouldn't worry too much.

  • I am due the 30th(36 weeks) and have been driving myself to doctors appointments and around on errands... I wouldn't worry.. just listen to your body
  • I'm 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant, and I drive when I feel the need to. Today I drove about 40 minutes away because I had the crazy instinct that my newborn would need a sun hat and I wanted to check my favorite baby store for one. Crazy I know. But, I told my husband and he said that if I felt good enough to do it then go for it!
