Should I bother calling my OB?

I haven't had any back pain through my pregnancy really until today. It's been persistent and extremely painful deep in my lower back. To the point where walking is very difficult and once I sit down standing back up is almost impossible without causing excruciating pain.

Is this something that is normal or does this warrant me calling my OB this late? FTM, not necessarily sure what pain is normal and what should be of concern.

Haven't had any (noticeable) contractions, but lots of pelvic pressure. 37 weeks tomorrow, btw.

  • Does it feel like your tailbone is splitting when you go to stand up? If so, that's SPD. It's all the relaxin your body is pumping out to loosen the ligaments so your hips and pelvis can open up and spread. Your bones and pelvic floor don't have much stability at this point which is what causes the pain. Really not much you can do for it but give birth. :/ It's a major bummer.

  • Yes! @goosenpumpkin my tailbone and hips hurt really bad too. I just didn't know if this kind of pain was considered starting of "back labor" or what cause it's intense and came from no where!
  • Try to keep your legs together when you roll out of bed. Don't do too much lifting, walking up and down stairs, or walking really. The more you do earlier in the day, the more pain you will be in at night. It is so miserable, I know.
  • @goosenpumpkin I'll have to try keeping my legs together because getting out of bed to pee at night is so difficult. Gah, how am I supposed to function at work like this?! I can't moveeee!!

I feel like a turtle stuck on it's back all the time.

Try wrapping your hips at the widest point in a scarf, then twist off the scarf until it puts a nice amount of pressure on them. It feels amazing when relaxin kicks in hard.

  • I was having this problem Sunday, but it has relaxed some. I don't feel great, but I do feel much better. I walked a lot because I was at work, maybe it helped?
