Hip pain

I am 32 weeks and have been having terrible hip pain, mostly on my right side. I notice it the most when laying down in bed. I am using a body pillow and some other pillow when I sleep and also have been doing stretches during the day. I use a heating too but no relief. Is there anything else I can do to ease the pain? Thanks

  • You mention pillows, have you tried sleeping with one between your thighs?

  • Other than stretching and yoga, I like to sit on my yoga ball whenever I can at home and sorta just roll my hips around on it. But nothing fancy.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks. Yea I have been sleeping with a pillow between my thighs and using a yoga ball as well. Only 8 weeks to go.

I have awful hip pain on my right side as well, mostly because that is where LO hangs out the most. I bought a maternity support belt and where it a few hours a day here and there, it helps tremendously! It lifts her up and take the pressure off my hip. I also sleep with pillows between my legs and alternate heat/ice. Heat really helps me, so I'm sorry it doesn't help you.

  • I have to sleep at work sometimes and the beds give me stabbing hip pain (paramedic we can snooz at night) but at home by bed is soft and doesn't hurt as much. I would recommend a memory foam mattress topper, the softer the bed the less hip pain I have gotten, if it's within your means I recommend it (they are not that expensive at costco!)
  • I had this problem and went to a chiropractor.  One visit and boy does it feel better!

  • Are you sure it is your hip itself and not the round ligament stretching and preparing for birth? If it is the round ligament, try ice instead of heat. I get the same sharp pains and ice helps almost instantly.
  • Ever heard of relaxin? Hormone that allows the muscles and joints to relax to prepare for birth, it can be very painful to some, and it is more noticeable after your first pregnancy..
  • Try going to the chiropractor. I started going a few weeks ago and my hips feel a lot better. He gave me a few stretches to do at home as well.
  • I have hip pain when I get up after sitting, but it tends to ease up for me shortly after the initial rush. I do feel like I'm being kicked in the hip sometimes though, I mentioned something about it to the Perinatal doc a few days ago and they said it's because the baby is getting big and too cramped.
