Dog detecting labor?

Has anyone ever heard of a dog or any pet sensing labor is on the way? I am only 35 weeks but today my lab is acting very strange, extra clingy and stares at me hard every time I make a little noise or have a BH contraction and she licks my belly. Just curious if anyone has any experience with this!

Re: Dog detecting labor?

  • I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not. Dogs definitely know that something is up. My dog keeps getting more and more protective and has to lay on my belly all the time. Recently since I haven't been feeling the best he walks with me everywhere I go. So idk if they can exactly sense labor, but they def know something is up.

  • I've never heard of it with labor but I know they can often tell if your blood sugar is messed up or you are having other complications. Dogs are amazing.
  • My rott is acting the same way. Very close to me at ALL times.
  • My dog, who is my baby, would have nothing to do with me before I found out I was pregnant. Through morning sickness she sat on my feet everytime I puked, then when morning sickness was over she went back to ignoring me. Within the past two weeks as bh have become stronger and more frequent she's all over me again.
  • Hmmm. Interesting topic! I was just talking to my boyfriend about this. It seems like the further along I get the more protective my pup has become. Granted, he's also about 6 months so his personality and such are starting to be more predominant. But he's attached to my hip, and has started pacing if I make a sound or like breathe in really deeply.
  • I was literally about to start a thread about this! Lol. A couple of days ago I fell and when I went to the hospital and they told me I had a few contractions but they stopped. Ever since then, my fur baby has been completely up my butt! Usually she sleeps under our bed, but now she's sleeping literally on top of me. I can't even go pee without her following me into the bathroom!
  • I'm dog sitting for my parents while they're away, and their one pup who has always been attached to me is practically smothering me now. The first time he sat in my lap and got kicked he looked confused, but he's been laying on me ever since and follows me everywhere! They can sense when something's not right, I have a cervical spine injury and when I lived with my parents for awhile their dogs would crowd and snuggle me if I had a painful treatment. They can sense hormones and body chemistry as well which is why they go nutty during pregnancy. I couldn't figure out why my dog was obsessed with my belly button and chasing me like I was prime rib until I found out I was pregnant!
  • I am curious about this as well! One of my cats who is usually very independent has been a stage 5 clinger for several weeks now. He constantly wants to lay around my belly and kneads on me 24/7. I feel bad shooing him away but he is up my butt all day now! Lol

  • I will let everyone know if labor starts! I wasn't sure she was too keen on my pregnancy since we rescued her right about the same time I got pregnant but now I'm sure she knows

I know this post is about dogs but I actually found out I was pregnant because of my cat. At 2/3 weeks she started laying on my belly and kneading it. Animals are very smart so i wouldn't be surprised if your dog sensed something! Keep us updated!

**Edited because only half of my post actually posted
  • My dog has acted extra clingy through all of my pregnancies.  She always acted especially clingy before I even knew.  By my fourth after two days of her not leaving my side.  I told my husband.  No need to pee on a stick, the dog knows I'm pregnant.  And now that I'm nearing the end she is super protective and lovey to me.
  • Funny this post came up. I have a chocolate lab who has always been loving, but for the past week (I'm 31 weeks) she has been stuck to me like glue!! She definitely seems to know something is changing, and something big is about to change (this is our first baby). I don't mind one bit though, I love my fur babies too.

  • We must have a dumb dog. Haha just kidding... We love her... But she wants nothing to do with me now that I'm pregnant. She hates that she can't snuggle on my lap because my belly gets in her way and has become such a daddy's girl! She also hates being in the nursery and has started pooping in there. She's almost three and completely potty trained for awhile now so we know it's because she is just a little less than thrilled to become a big sister! Haha
  • I have a 5 year old pit who is the same way. She used to be more clingy to my husband until I got pregnant. Now she is all over me everywhere I go.
  • I have a doberman who is typically a very velcrodog with me but lately he will not settle unless he is touching some part of me. He would prefer to have his 80lb self in my lap but if I try to banish him he settles for sitting/laying on a foot or backing up to where his butt/hip is against my leg. He follows me everywhere and is the biggest furbaby when I try to get a little privacy. Pretty sure he would jump in the shower with me if I didn't shut the bathroom door in his face!
  • Both of my pups are the same way. It's funny, when I'm on the couch they both like to lay on each side of me making sure they are at least touching some part of me. One dog was always somewhat attached to me but my corgi never liked to be close at all and was afraid of being on the couch. It's odd to see him so calm now, I'm glad one of us is!
