Re: How Do You Deal with Pregnancy Aches and Pains?

  • Complaining and just waiting for it to pass :) I've taken the extra strength Tylenol which my Dr says is fine for pain or headaches but nothing works for me other then waiting it out.

  • Cold Therapy, I bought a great back wrap that helped with so many issues. Working at a desk all day did not help matters. I was able to wear this back wrap to help get me through the day.

Stretching and massage will also keep the blood flowing and help in pain management as well.
  • Good thinking! And there's nothing wrong with doing some simple stretches at your desk :)
  • I'm stuck at a desk all day and my butt, hips and legs are so aggravated every day. I'm going to try a memory foam seat cushion hoping that will help
  • Having right si joint issues and im not even big yet! Wearing a brace daily- Tylenol twice daily, cold- hot packs and still have hard time walking standing and sitting
  • Hot showers!

Sometimes there's just nothing better than a hot shower or a heating pad. (Just not too hot! :-j )
  • Warm baths, bed rest, and Tylenol if it's really bad.
  • I just crawl into a corner and wish the pain would go away ;)

In all seriousness, Epsom salt baths have been helpful. But, the pregnancy has horribly affected my osteoarthritis and it's so brutal some days that I can't even leave bed. I try to keep painful areas elevated to keep down swelling which makes aches worse.

I'm so sorry to hear that!! I'm glad baths are giving you some relief. One day at a time :)
  • I'm having posterior pelvic pain and my hips and upper butt just kill me at the end of the day! My mom had the same problem and suggested sleeping on the couch on your side with your butt pressed up against the back cushion. I slept like that last night and got much better sleep than in my bed! Also prenatal workouts with pelvic tilts helps when the pain isn't too bad.
  • My pregnancy hasn't been horrible. The few things I've dealt with haven't been that bad. And I've wanted this little one for so long, I can't bring myself to complain about anything. I hope I keep this frame of mind!
  • Have you tried both regular prenatel massages and prenatal yoga? Both truly helped in my first pregnancy.
  • I prefer warm baths and massage.

It sounds like warm baths are a very popular method of pain relief! So glad they're working for you :)
  • I filled a (brand new, pregnancy intensifies the sense of smell) tube sock with rice. Microwave in 30 second incremements until it's comfortably warm, then apply to the sore spot.

    Great DIY suggestion, @Chichigo!
  • If the pain is mild, I try to do things that distract me or get me tired. I be sure to walk an hour a day to help me fall asleep despite the aches that would normally keep me up. Warm showers, easy prenatal yoga, rolling with my foam roller, these all seem to help.

  • Bath then heating pad and Scrubs re-runs to distract myself. Every. Single. Night. If one's missing from my routine i end up a very, very, very sad mama since lots of old back and hip injuries plus pregnancy is a killer combination. If it's a really targeted area treat it like a sports injury, 15 minutes ice, 15 minutes heat, on and off several times at the end of the day. Also, there's a place on the side of the booties (the part that dimples) where the muscles from multiple parts of our bodies intersects. Try laying on a tennis ball and rolling to find that spot that, well, hurts like a mother. It's surprising how many people's back and shoulder pain can be minimized by just releasing the tension in that one spot since it loosens your hips, back, buns, hamstrings, IT band and more!
  • The worst pain for me has been lower back pain, ranging from as low as right in between my hips to the upper back of the pelvis. I wrote a post today about some of my favorite stretches and techniques for handling this stuff if anyone is interested!
    Good luck
