Hair treatments in pregnancy, did you do it?

Hey everyone yay it's Friday!

Hair: I normally do highlights but I chose not to do during the pregnancy due to my sensitivity to smells, I thought I would feel very sick of fumes in a hair salon so I opted out...

Needless to say my hair is now ombre lol but 3 more weeks so it's not bothering me that much :)

I'm just curious to know if you felt comfortable in treating your hair and what services you've done :x

Re: Hair treatments in pregnancy, did you do it?

  • I usually dye my hair and keep it black at all times. But I was told with my first two pregnancys not to do it, so when my midwife said it was okay I just didn't feel comfortable with it. So now my hair is half black and half brown and silver. Yeah I got my dad's lovely genes. He had a full head of gray at the age of 20. Hats are my friend right now.

This is my first pregnancy, I did dye my hair before we took maternity pictures. I didn't even think twice about it, till a friend was telling me you arent suppose to dye your hair when pregnant. Well I didn't get that memo. I went to the salon and did the works, I did notice my scalp was more sensitive tho.

I didn't get my highlights updated once I found out I was pregnant so I have a slight ombré look going. My main reason to not get them done is because I wasnt sure if I wanted to keep them up once LO arrived so i figured I would grow them out while I had the pregnancy excuse lol. :)

  • I've had mine done, after my doctor and cosmetologist both assured me it was safe. The type of colors used in the 90's and now are different from one another.
  • I used to relax my hair and get keratin treatments, in preparation for pregnancy I started growing out my curls. I hate my hair most days but just figured it wasn't worth the risk.
  • I've had my hair done a few times. I've gotten approval from both my regular OB and high risk doctor. They both said it was safe. Which was a blessing bc I would probably have a full head of grey if I couldn't.
  • I did a home colour at about week 28 which was Ammonia-free. Up until that point I had been too afraid to do it because of the risks, but everybody I have asked has said that it is perfectly safe once you're past the first trimester.

I just really ventilated the room and waited until I was at a point in the pregnancy where I was comfortable that these small amount of chemicals wouldn't affect my baby.
  • My first pregnancy I dyed my hair. I am a natural brunette and at the time I was trying to stay blonde. I got married to his dad when I was 3 months pregnant and my baby came out fine. Of course, after I had him I went back natural so this pregnancy is hair dye free.
  • Mine is kind of an ombre look right now too but I already had a semi ombre. I plan on doing some balayage after the baby is born. I like balayage better than regular highlights because you don't have to get it retouched as often. As a mom that is better for me because I can go longer in between hair treatments.

  • I've dyed my hair twice during this pregnancy and need to do it again before LO comes.  My gray is starting to show and it is driving me crazy.  I also did high lights when I was pregnancy with my DS, coloring your hair is safe during pregnancy.  Not worrying about it at all.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

I've tried to color my hair twice, but both times the color didn't take right.
My stylist told me some women's hair react differently while pregnant. She told me it's safe but just to wait because it's not coming out right
    Boo :(
  • My dad is a hair dresser and he has told me time and time again that colouring your hair while pregnant is safe. Any of his assistants or co workers that have been pregnant continued to dye their hair while working. I personally have had my hair done twice while pregnant. I honestly think I'd be more nervous working in that environment for 9 months with the fumes, compared to going every 6-8 weeks for 2 hours. Also many, many salons offer ammonia free colours so if your nervous, call around and see if you can find a salon that offers one of those lines. Ultimately just do what your comfortable with :)

My friend owns a salon and told me it was perfectly safe to color your hair during pregnancy. She uses a organic dye on all her clients that are pregnant. If I can say one thing it's that my hair has looked fabulous since the time I found out I was expecting till now when I'm ready to get it done again(every 6 weeks) prior to baby!
  • I've had my hair done every 6 weeks since I've been preganant. My doctor assured me it was ok but I get a full head of highlights weaved in foils so no product is directly touching my scalp. And my stylist has a room with several windows she opens plus a fan and air conditioning when I'm there :) I don't think I could've gone the whole pregnancy after hearing it's safe and getting the ok my hair would've been a hot mess for sure. Lol
  • It's just fine to color your hair while pregnant. I would side-eye the shit out of anyone, especially a doctor that said otherwise. For goodness sakes.

  • I read all the stuff we have available in the UK and it was pretty inconclusive, so I decided to go with it and leave my highlights from 16weeks until afterwards to see if I liked my (dishwater blonde) natural colour. My hair is in great condition now, BUT the first thing I'm gonna do when I feel up to it is go and get my hair re-done! GOD I feel dull without it
  • I avoided it, like everything else, in the first trimester but have used at home ammonia free color twice since then

I've gotten my hair highlighted once already at 12w and plan on again at 39w. I know dye's safe when the stylist uses the proper product, but not getting my hair highlighted consistently was a personal choice. ... Plus I moved and didn't trust anyone to color my hair! ;)

  • I colored my hair every 3-4 weeks with all 3 pregnancies. I use box color.. my first two children turned out fine, no health problems, and as smart as can be. As long as the area is ventilated so you're not inhaling too much of the fumes...which can lead to dizziness and nausea, you would be fine.
  • I got my hair colored in the first trimester and highlights in the second trimester. I am having it colored again this weekend before my baby shower. I was always told that it's safe. I think you just have to do with what you feel comfortable with.
  • I decided not to - not really paranoid about it being all that dangerous or anything but figured it wasnt worth the risk and it meant saving money for a baby.
