Do you think checking for dilation can put you into labor?

I will be 39 weeks on Friday & my apt is tomorrow. I think the doctors will check to see if I'm dilated. Just wondering if I should get checked or not. My friend swears it sent her info labor 3 times & last time I believe I was checked on a Thursday & went into labor Sunday night. I'm just worried about my DH getting home in time from work an hour away, he has off starting Tuesday. Last time I had a fast delivery so expecting it to go even quicker this time. Anyone have reasons for getting checked or not?

  • I don't believe so
  • I've been checked 3 times plus had a cerclage (stiches) dug out of my cervix over a week ago and I am still pregnant.

Although I do concede every woman is different and if your not high risk for anything and you're not comfortable with it then express your concerns to your doctor you are a team.
  • My cervix was checked last week and tonight and definitely still pregnant and not in labor

That does not sound so good:( ok def not having membranes stripped or anything so I feel a little bit better.
  • It's not likely to send you into labor, but some people have sensitive cervixes (I do). Messing with it definitely gives me cramps, and it always has, even when I wasn't pregnant (pap smears trigger cramps for me).

That being said, you can decline cervical checks. They really are only a "gee wiz" procedure to satisfy curiosity anyway. They don't yield a hell of a lot of useful info, or really tell you how close you are to labor. For instance, you can go from closed to ready to go within a day, and you can sit on a dialated cervix for weeks. I just don't need someone poking my cervix for no reason like that.

  • They can if they strip your membranes.
