I'm in Ireland... I'm entitled to 24 weeksmsmaternity leave - getting benefit for that time. My job is going to pay half wages for these 6 months - all in all I'll prob come out short each month by a few hundred Euro but I'm super happy with that - work didn't have to pay anything... I'm can then take my annual leave - 15 days left for this year and can then take up to two months unpaid leave and can then take all my annual leave for 2016 if I like - meaning a total of up to about ten months off....
By law though I have to start my maternity leave two weeks before my due date.... I also spend a lot of time on my feet In work so I think ill be happy of the break the only think is if lo is two weeks late - that'd be four weeks of sitting around at which point I'm sure ill be ready to kill....
Fair play to all you ladies working right up to d-day.... :-) glad to see Ireland finally do something somewhat right....I feel for you ladies....
I'm due June 16th. So far my plan is to work until the end of May. I have 130 or so sick days saved so I plan on using 12 weeks FMLA and my job allows 12 additional weeks for extended disabilities if needed. So I don't plan on returning to with until Oct/Nov.
I had no idea the US had such short maternity leaves. I'm in Canada & will be taking a month vacation & then a year paid maternity leave & another 6 months unpaid (if I can budget for it). My employer has to have a position for me to return to. Reading this makes me feel very fortunate! Best of luck to all of you!
I'm so jealous of all the maternity leave times. I work for a small company and do not get any paid maternity leave. When my son was born via emergency c section in 2010, I had to go back to work just under three weeks later. Couldn't afford to stay out longer not risk losing my job. I still work for the same company. This time, I'm leaving for good and I can't wait.
The US definitely needs to revise their maternity leave laws!! Even my husband was eligible for six weeks paid paternity leave.
I'll be working up until my due date, but my company is flexible on working from home so I plan to work from home starting a few days before due date. I'll be taking 10 weeks off: 6 on short-term disability and then 4 using vacation time. Which will leave me with no vacation time but better than unpaid. My husband gets 4 weeks paternity leave paid, so we are thinking 2 concurrent with me at beginning and 2 by himself after my 10 weeks are up, to get our girl to 12 weeks before daycare.
I had a colleague mention that 10 weeks was "so short" (as context, a lot of my colleagues make more money than I do, or their spouse do, and they typically take longer than that). He meant it in a sympathetic way but it still rubbed me the wrong way. I think we too easily forget that we are extremely lucky in the US to work at a company as flexible as we do! So many mothers can't take any time, much less paid.
I wish I lived in Ireland! I have 12 weeks total of FMLA but anytime taken now for doctors appointments is deducted from the 12 weeks! My employer in a way penalizes you for using earned sick time . In order to avoid penalty It must be covered under FMLA!
My husband and I work for the same employer and for a state that goes above and beyond FMLA. So anytime before the baby and right after and if the Dr prescrips it can be considered pregnancy disability so it doesn't go into my FMLA. My husband can't claim it unless he has to take care of me. I don't plan on using it though. I plan on working until the Friday before my due date (which is on a Tuesday). Then I'm taking my 12 weeks of FMLA after she is born and my husband will prob take 2 weeks of sick at that time. Then when I go back to work after my 12 weeks, he will take his FMLA for 12 weeks.
Re: Maternity leave?
