  • I think Kaiya is gorgeous - like the feminine version of Kai, which I've always liked. Plus, I think your spelling for it is perfect - leaves no questions on the pronunciation.

DH and I are most likely compromising on Rowan for our boy name. BUT, it is currently trending upward in popularity, and even worse, it's also being used as unisex name, so there may be another Rowan in his classes, and it could be a girl. Even tho it is much more often being used as a boy's name, the idea of other kids making fun of my potential son for 'having a girls name' weighs on me. Especially if hypothetical girl is a grade ahead of him, then everybody is going to be used to hearing that as a girls name. Sigh. But we can't agree on our earlier boy name choices so we will probably just go with this barring some brilliant insight along the way. Maybe there will be other kids with the same name. Hopefully not too many. And hopefully not girls. ETA - I just hope that in this small, red state town there aren't that many hippy type folk who will name their kid after a tree. Maybe we'll get lucky that way
Weird - Rowan doesn't strike me as a girls name at all.

Our current frontrunner is Cameron, and I've been having the same worries.

  • I'm starting to love the name Ivy and I think it goes well with our other kids' names but would the possible reference of "poison Ivy" keep you from using it?

One of my best friends named her daughter Ivy, she is 10 now, and as far as I know poisen Ivy has never been mentioned to either of them, at least not yet. She's about to be in middle school in a couple years, maybe older kids will make a reference. As for Ivy herself, she loves her name.
  • Hiya ladies - so glad you started this thread! The names board isn't as helpful as I had hoped!!!

So, despite the fact that I'm not set on the name/names - my husband keeps going back to the names Asher, Ashton and Austin -- DS1 is Jayden (I know most of you probably hate it - but, we still love it and the only other Jaydens he's met have been on playgrounds - so, it's been uniqueish for us ;))

Anyway - of the three I think Ashton and Jayden "go" more than Asher or Austin -- thoughts?

MN will likely be Samuel for any of them - but, that's not certain!
  • @AmyCee‌ I love Samuel! I'm glad we aren't having a boy because I wanted that and my husband was not feeling it. Glad to avoid the fight :) I think all three of your choices actually sound good with Jayden and work with the middle name - I don't think you can go wrong. Personally I like Asher best because it's the least popular (but that's my own hangup!)
  • Any thoughts from the group on the following choices: Ramona, Nina, Elyse, Penny, Pearl? We are looking for something easy to spell, not mispronounced, and not in the top 100 baby names.

I like Ramona and Penny the most, I think it's because they remind me of characters from my childhood :)

I really like Nina and Elyse. Ramona and and Pearl are nms, but aren't horrible either. As for Penny, it's cute, but in my area it's becoming über popular (along with Poppy). I've met 3 newborns with the name Penny since 2015 started. I don't think it will stay out of the top 100 much longer.

  • @hoosonfirst‌ I love Elyse, Pearl, & Ramona! Such cute names!

    I love all these names!!

I'm sorry if this makes me a completely horrible person and total mean girl but i was lurking the 2015 May name thread for name inspiration and i cannot believe SO many of the names they've chosen. Go there if you need a chuckle. Though i made it through about 4 pages of the thread and began forming a bruise on my forehead from face palming it so many times.

I didn't see any really weird names...maybe some uncommon/unusual ones but they have cultural signifigance. But I'm not super picky with names unless it's really out there like Rusty Waters or Sparky

I love the names Ramona and Elise (I think the spelling Elise is less likely to be misspelled as it is the more commonly accepted way of spelling).

I think Austin and Jayden sound best together and then Ashton and Jayden. I love the name Asher but it is apparently rising in popularity if that is something you're trying to avoid.

ETA: my phone apparently thinks Jayden needs to be Hayden, like the city...

I loved all the culturally diverse ones! But when there were names deliberately spelled wrong for the sake of originality, that's when i bow out. You shouldnt just spell it wrong because you like that it's different. It makes you seem like you don't know how to spell. I'm sorry but Avreigh instead of Avery is not right. BUt whatever floats your boat. It's not something i'd do to my kid.

ETA: my own spelling errors lol go figure
  • @mindaa‌ - let's claim the boy names back from the girls! Use it!

@AmyCee‌ - standing alone I like Ashton best (I actually like ALL your names stand alone, including Samuel), but paired with Samuel I like Austin better. It just seems to roll together better, to me.

@hoosonfirst‌ - I like Ramona (I don't think I've met any), Nina (makes me think of Nina Simone), and Pearl (I love the old time vibe this imparts)

Now I'm gonna go check out the may name board ;)

  • We just pretty much decided on Penelope. DH likes Penny but I have a weird thing about nicknames. My name is super common and it has no nn so I really want my kids to have a nn! Anyway we can't decide on a middle name. Right now it's between Ann and Lynn, what do you guys think?

I think Penelope Ann flows together better, but Penny Lynn sounds cute so if it were me, I would go by what I plan to call her more often and how much I'm going to use her MN.
I love your name choice by the way!

@frankengibbs‌ thanks! And i love Norah!
ETA: I didn't finish my thought, distraction!! I wanted Norah but DH didn't love it. But I do love Lilah more, it almost made me text DH and suggest it! It's very pretty and I've never heard of it before! It reminds me of Delilah, which I also love (our name list has been forever long, I can't decide on anything)!

Penny Lynn sounds close to Penny Lane...a famous groupie from the 70s

  • We just told DH's dad and step mom and they said "oh no really?" :-w

Thanks ladies for the feedback and support :) Nina and Ramona are the front runners, Elyse/Elise and Pearl are my personal likes but not DHs (Pearl being the June birthstone). Penny will probably not make the cut... I just thought it would a nice nod to the fact that my husband is a coin collector. Plus, inspector gadget... Of course! But I hate Big Bang Theory so it's kinda ruining it for me.

Any thoughts from the group on the following choices: Ramona, Nina, Elyse, Penny, Pearl? We are looking for something easy to spell, not mispronounced, and not in the top 100 baby names.

I have a soft spot for Elyse because that's my sister's name :) she's 19 and I think she's only encountered one other Elyse ever, and that one was a few grades below her in school.

ETA I do know one problem my sister has encountered fairly regularly is that people frequently want to pronounce her name "Elsie" at first. I would think that this would happen even more often if you were to go with the alternate spelling, "Elise."

  • We are trying to do an "-ie" ending girl name to stick with our current "theme". I am having trouble finding one I like. Leaning towards Addlie, but thinking Baylie maybe...but probably not haha. This is so hard!!!. Thinking Middle name will be very unique after my grandmother, Dom.enica. Currently we have Soph.ie and Bryn.lie. My husband likes Averie and Rorie as well but I am not in love with them by any means. Open to opinions. I'm sure they wouldn't change my mind to much but I would love feedback or other suggestions.
  • So I'm genuinely curious about something that I see, especially on the actual name boards. I can understand breaking up really really unique names to offset Google searches but I don't see the point with fairly common names. I'm not picking on the poster above me, but Dominica, Sophie, Rowan, etc, those are all really common names. If you plug, Rowan, for example into Google, you get a whole bunch of pages for Rowan University. Even if you specify "baby names" you get all the name sites with the etymology of the name. You would have to do HOURS of digging to find out if someone were talking about your specific Rowan online without your knowledge.

I'm not being mean, just something I've noticed lately that seems like it's making a lot more work for folks than necessary.

Anyway, not that he's made any suggestions of his own, but the hubs' front runner for names is Kaylee Grace. And while it was originally my suggestion, I'm not sure that Kaylee will really age well into adulthood. I've got reservations on it now.

Grace was supposed to be the non-negotiable mn, it's rather become a family name once my grandma passed away, but it really has gotten SUUUUUUPER popular. Plus, my current favorite name is Jeanette, and I don't think they sound right together. So now I'm on the quest for a mn for Jeanette so I can finish luring my husband over into my camp.

Or, he can actually either come up with his own suggestion or go wading through the list I'm keeping on the fridge! ;)

Do you keep the "." in the name or was that just to point out the spelling?

  • finchfeeder80 I wouldn't worry about popularity with the middle name, I'm in the camp of doing whatever you want with the middle name, even if it's weird :)
Honestly, how many people actually know your middle name as you go through life?

Sorry, that wasn't as clear as I meant for it to be. Our current daughters names (5 and 2) are Sophie and Brynlie lol.

ETA: The period was to break up the name for google searches as well as an attempt at showing pronunciation on Domenica. :)

I said that too. And if we decide on a name that works well with Grace, I'm definitely going to use it. There's just something my ear doesn't like about Jeanette Grace. My mom and I are going to be together for a few hours Saturday and I've enlisted her help. I'm also going to show her the whole list I have going. With the hubs not really inputting anything, I just need someone to bounce ideas off of. She said she had the same problem with my dad!

Thank you for starting this thread because I am struggling big time with names this time around! I have a daughter Vivienne Blake (we mostly call her Vivi) and I'm having another girl. We want to use an "H" name as either middle or first name after my DH's father who passed away. Let me know your thoughts:

    Cora
Holland (H and also FIL was born in Holland. Would prob use this as a middle name not first)
    Helena
    Violet
    Lucia (pronounced Lu SEE a)
    Kaia

I love when middle names have a special meaning rather than just because they "sound nice" so I think it's great to find a way to honor a family member.
  • Can't decide on a boys name which means it'll probably be a boy! Caleb cole or Parker cole?
  • Go with Lilah if you love it! I work with children birth to 3 years old and I have met far more girls named Nora and Abigail and only one Lilah! :)

I also like names that aren't too popular. So far I love Mila (pronounced me-la), my husband loves Teagan and we both like Ailey (pronounced eye-lee) and Mayla (it's the name of a of a Lily). I feel like we are never going to agree on a name that everyone likes (both of us and the grandparents) & it's very frustrating. Any thoughts on the names would be appreciated :)

Go with what you and your DH love since this LO is yours. The more options you add the longer it will take to decide. It's hard enough getting two people to agree on something big like a child's name.
Also - I like Mila the best from your name list. :) good luck!

I prefer Caleb :) traditional without being common like John or James, but also not likely to be as faddish like Parker is.
  • We have two boy names set, but I'm not in love with the girl name that DH is dead set on. (Hazel. It has badass family significance though, and family significance is actually even more important to me than loving the name, so we shall see. That it's trendy doesn't even matter to us since it's a family name.)

We agreed to have a first and second choice for each sex (Team Green!), in case the kid just doesn't look like the preferred name. Second girl name is what I'm hoping sticks, but we can't agree on anything.

We have a baby name book but it's not doing it for us. So. Frustrating.!!

Ramona is super cute... Hmmm... ;-)
