buying diapers?

I'll be 16 weeks tomorrow. While I was at Target tonight, I passed the diaper/baby aisle. I went ahead and picked up a pack of diapers and wipes. I'm a FTM and I've had several friends recommend starting now on buying diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, etc. to get a collection so you're not trying to buy so much when the baby comes along. I'd love to have a good stock pile! Does anyone know any good sources for coupons or giveaways for things like this? Especially diapers? They're so expensive.

Re: buying diapers?

  • Wait until Target has their "buy 2 get a gift card" sales - they have them a lot and usually you get a $15-$20 coupon. Also, use the Target Red Card, you automatically save 5% off everything, including diapers. Babies R Us sometimes has good coupons they mail to your house when you sign up for a rewards card, but unless they have that coupon going ($10 off per box), they are a rip off. Also keep an eye on Amazon for open box deals (they don't seem to come up often) which usually just means the box itself is damaged and diapers are fine (I got a box once that literally just a part of the picture on the box was torn off, box was intact). You can also use ebay, but obviously returns aren't an option on there if you find the brand you buy doesnt work good. My advice is buy gift cards so you have the money already set aside, but don't buy too many since not all diapers are created equal. With DS we had to use Pampers, he peed out of everything else. With DD on the way, I am hoping I can find a cheaper brand that works for her, we shall see!

  • Join Amazon mom (it's free) and then subscribe to a diaper delivery. Save an extra 20% and they ship right to your door... I would also hold off on stockpiling diapers until the baby gets here... You never know if a certain brand will cause rashes, etc... If you really feel like you need to spread the spending out I would suggest buying gift cards to target (as pp mentioned they have great deals occasionally) and then using the gift cards to purchase diapers once the baby gets here.
  • Costco has good sales on diapers and wipes but their sales are monthly so you have to stock up when a sale is going on.

Make sure to always calculate price per diaper (often around 20-28 cents) so you know if that "good deal" is really worth it! For example, zulily has Honest Company diapers (a designer brand) on a 30% off sale right now but they are still 32 cents per diaper. If you see 19 cents per diaper for Huggies, that's a good deal.

I would recommend only buying one small bag of Newborn diapers, two jumbo boxes of size 1, 3 boxes of size 2 and 3, and 4+ of size 4. If you end up with a small baby you can always buy more. You don't want to overstock if you can't return them. We only used NB size for about a week!
  • Make sure u keep all boxes sealed in case the baby ends up being allergic to that brand. I have a 3 year old so I've tried pretty much every brand of diaper to try and save money and my favorite are the target brand diapers. I've already purchased a few packs. I have 3 of their small packs of newborn diapers, they go up to 10 lb I believe so baby will definitely end up getting some use out of them. And in the beginning you go through a lot of diapers. I figured if baby is in newborn for 3 weeks with 6-8 changes a day I'm going to want close to 150 newborn diapers. So I bought 120.
  • I'm buying a variety of the smallest packages in nb so I can see which work best for baby. For bigger sizes I'm going not buying pampers or huggies when I find them on sale. Walmart will let you return without a receipt. So if you find a brand they don't carry that you end up liking you will still have credit at Walmart. This is where we do most of our shopping so the money will get used and then I can just redirect our normal shopping money to whatever diapers I want.
  • Agree with PP. I'd hold off until you know what brand works for your baby. They do not all do the job equally for each kid. You could always start setting the money aside now instead. Plus hopefully you'll get a lot of diapers as gifts and you don't want to have too much in a size that baby blinks through.
  • Keep an eye on CVS, too. With coupons and Extra Care Bucks, you can get great deals. Coupons dot Com is a great source for coupons, as is PickUpTheValues dot Com. I'm picking up diapers here and there to prepare. I'm also stashing the Target gift cards I get back from their "Buy X, Get a $X gift card" sales so that I can use them for diapers, wipes, breast milk bags, etc. once baby is here.
  • Thanks ladies! This is REALLY helpful. Sounds like the general consensus is hold off and just get gift cards instead so I will prob do that. I only bought a small bag (36 ct) of huggies size 1. And a package of sensitive skin wipes. So at least I didn't go crazy with the initial shopping. :-)
  • @Wering‌ I am doing the same thing with the Target gift cards. We have like $100 in just the ones they give you for buying a lot of an item. We plan on using those for baby necessities :-)
  • If you want to start stocking up on something, another good one is wipes. I buy the unscented ones just incase band has a reaction. You can never have too many wipes around the house.
  • For my baby shower my mom put on the cards a cute saying to bring either a pack of Huggies or a book. It worked out well and I will do this again.
  • I would stockpile on wipes and just keep an eye out for sales for diapers. Make sure its a place with a return policy so you can return unopened boxes if the brand causes rashes or your baby outgrows it. NB lasted a month for us and my 2.5 yr old is still in size 4... Just moved up from 3's 2 months ago. This new baby i started buying cloth diapers to save money.
  • @julie1445‌ where have you found the best place is to get cloth? I would like to get a good collection of those so we can use them as well.
