3rd Trimester

Wwyd? Prodromal labor. Membrane sweep.

I've been contracting on and off for a week and a half for 10-18 hours at a time without going into active labor. My dr offered a membrane sweep on Thursday 2/19. I'm due Sunday 2/22. I was induced with my first two 1 day early and 9 days late (low fluid, water broke and ctx stalled) and had a membrane sweep 6 days late with my third (had her 20 hours later). Would you go ahead with stripping my membranes or wait? It seems like my babies like to cook a bit longer.

Re: Wwyd? Prodromal labor. Membrane sweep.

  • What position is your baby in? My intense prodromal labor with DS1 and DS2 was mostly likely because of their OP position and all of that pre-labor work was tiring but part of the normal process. For me, not rushing it, and letting things happen as they happened was part of the overall birth we wanted.

  • I decided against a sweep for today. I want baby to come when baby is ready. If it comes down to induction, I get a sweep for sure.

Not sure about position, but my guess based on where we hear the heart beat and I feel parts moving is ROP. I told my dr my concern about positioning and she basically said baby will usually turn on its own without me having to encourage it through various positionings. I'm still going to try to encourage a better position based on what I've read (a lot of good stuff on spinningbabies). She thinks baby is anterior now, but I feel like maybe she was just saying that.

How long did your prodromal labor go on for? Did you encourage position changes? Or other ways to bring on labor?
  • I waited for labor to begin on its own with both boys. DS1 was an extremely long labor (3 days with prodromal seguing into productive labor). DS2 was only 9 hours of active labor after prodromal on and off. That was a hospital birth and I actually left after a day to avoid induction because that just wasn't the right path for me and the OB was supportive. We checked back in a few hours later. Both boys moved during labor (DS1 with help, DS2 on his own while I was pushing). I did swimming, chiro treatment (which I had through all of PG2, and some spinning babies stuff). DS2 was out of the hospital and the MW was very supportive of just relaxing and waiting through the prodromal contractions and letting my body work it out as long as all signs looked good.
