It's a very popular name for girls where I'm at (southeast US). BTN says masculine or feminine. It is a surname so to me it's similar to and could be used like the names Jordan and Taylor.

Avery is a boys name and from my understanding a version of Alfred, very much a boys name. I think Avery has become the "new" Riley and this is an awful trend. Sadly, I've met more girl Avery's than boy Avery's. I think I would be excited to meet irl a male Avery.
Gee, look at all these posters saying that it's a girls name and not masculine despite it's history. I wonder what that could mean about society perceives gender and names.......

People perceive it as a girls name because that's what they're used to seeing.. Right? The average person doesn't really think about name history. They think, "do I know boys named this or girls named this?"
Personally I like it better on a boy, but in reality I've never met one.
I was considering it for a boy, but have really only seen it on girls, which it is very popular at that.
In 2014 it ranked at 196 for boys and has climbed for the 10 years prior when it was 225. Yes it's currently trendy on girls but it's also still used for boys. I personally know 2 boys under 5 with it and only 1 girl. I would not hesitate to use it on a boy same as Riley.
Agreed with pp, the general public doesn't think of history for names usually. For instance, my husband thought the name Briar was a boys name because thats the only way he had heard it. But I explained the Briar Rose from the grimm brothers, so now he's not sure. Avery was more of a boy name 10 years ago but recently more girls.
Avery used to be my number one name for a girl....then my BFF went and named my goddaughter Avery lol...oh well, too trendy right now for my liking anyways. I definitely associate it more with girls than boys.....

It's very feminine sounding to me.
