What is safe to drink during pregnancy besides plain H2O?

I really have a taste for something with flavor, but my doctor said the only thing I should be drinking is water. He said no diet pop because of the artificial sweeteners, and no juice because of the extra calories. I'm really craving a diet ginger ale now! Any ideas?

Re: What is safe to drink during pregnancy besides plain H2O?

  • You can have what you want in moderation! Don't think you just have to drink water.
I drink a lot of fruit and barely juice to help keep the uti's at bay.
Hell, I even have the occasional can of coke when i fancy it! (Not often as high in caffeine)
But if you fancy it, go for it!
Waters obviously the best thing for you but milk is just as good too!

  • If you're worried about extra calories, you can use nuun tablets. I use them a lot for running, but they're a great way to add flavor to water without extra sugar. They have elctrolytes, some of them have vitamins, and most of them are caffeine-free. I doubled checked their website, and in their faqs they say they are safe for pregnancy.

  • I drink a cup of milk and a cup of orange juice a day. Plus I have a taste for lemonade, so I usually have a cup of lemonade a day (I buy organic milk and lemonade). My midwife said the lemonade was fine just to be careful of too much sugar. I also drink a cup iced unsweetened iced tea with my dinner. All water in between that.
  • I make a 50/50 mix of juice and sparkling water. Works perfectly!

  • I love ice water with lemon. I drink that all day long. If I'm at a restaurant I'll order iced tea.
  • Thanks ladies for all the ideas! The thought of only being able to drink water for the next 7 months was feeling like torture!
  • Drink what you want in moderation, as long as you're getting your 8 glasses of water a day. Funny how all doctors feel a little different about stuff, because my doc said diet sodas only, and I'm sorry but I had to disagree. I'm not crazy about all the fake sweeteners in them, so if I want soda, I drink regular coke. And I'll also have a glass of orange juice or raspberry iced tea if I want it, just not every day. Drink lots of water and stay balanced with other beverages, you'll be fine!

Yeah I'd skip the artificial sweaters - drink mostly water all day, but it you want something else have a glass or two. (Make sure to get ginger ale with real ginger). Just a cup is 8 oz not some 32 oz big gulp from fast food or convenience store places.

As a migraine sufferer, I didn't want to quit caffeine cold turkey so I have a small glass of lightly sweetened iced tea in the morning. (And I have the 8 oz cans of coke as back up for migraines) - which luckily have been way less frequent since I got pregnant.

My anti nausea craving has been orange juice.
  • @LadyJane083‌ Great point about a cup only being 8 ounces. Can you imagine justifying those 44 oz Big Gulps full of soda every day?? Haha. I want them, don't get me wrong! But I want this pregnancy to be about moderation and I hope all of us mamas can find a healthy, happy balance!
  • If you want ginger ale I have been drinking ginger beer. It's not alcoholic even though it's called beer. I buy the ones from trader joes. They use cane sugar and real ginger. It has definitely helped my nasuea when I've felt my worst. Other than that I agree with the ladies above. Water with lemon and I've been a sucker for real cherry juice.
  • Oh and one more thing: if I do get a soda at Subway or something, I fill it to the rim with ice and then suck on the ice chips after I'm done, it helps settle my stomach. It makes me drink less soda and then gets me a little water (melted ice haha) in there too!
  • I make a 50/50 mix of juice and sparkling water. Works perfectly!
I was going to recommend this as well! I do this even when I'm not pregnant. It satisfies my craving for bubbles and flavor without too much sugar or chemicals.

This is such an awesome idea!! I must try this!!! I am currently in love with the bubble flavor waters they sell at like wal mart and shoprite. They claim to have zero everything and they taste amazing. I brought a bottle in so my OB could take a look and he said I can drink them till my heart is content. YAY. However I still drink tons of water a day. I have a 24 oz water bottle I fill up at work about 3-4 times a day

  • I drink coconut water 2x/wk but it does have sugar like juice. I also make my own herbal non caffeinated iced teas. I add chopped fruit (lemon and lavender; strawberries;oranges;cucumber and fresh mint) to my huge water bottle and the infusions make it delicious.

  • the diet ginger ale is gross...I feel like i've been super sensitive to the fake sweetener taste. I'd go for a regular ginger ale once in awhile. Flavored water or seltzer is probably good.

  • Like many of the previous posts, EVERYTHING IN MODERATION when putting fuel into your body. If you want juice, have juice. I look for fruit juices that 1) have 100% juice in them (you have to read the label) and 2) no artificial sweeteners. A glass here or there isn't going to break your caloric intake, but you can add sparkling water if you need fizz. Diet soda would be a no-no due to the aspartame (up to 400x sweeter than regular sugar), though Stevia is one of the better ones on the market (made from a plant, not in a lab) if you don't do cane or organic sugar. A Coke or Pepsi here or there isn't going to hurt, same with coffee, but I think the recommended amount for caffeine intake per day is 200mg (2 cups of coffee).

You can try putting cucumbers, lemons, limes, strawberries, watermelon, etc. in your water too and if you want the fruit contained, they make water bottles with a core to hold the fruit.

  • The only things I can keep down now are Ginger Ale (regular!) and Orange Juice. I too love  Nuun.

  • Orange juice is my favorite right now. It's high in folic acid which is great for baby. As with everything just drink it in moderation. Make sure to get real orange juice, not "orange drink" which is just sugar water

  • frozen fruit, juice, or lemonade mixed with sparkling water can usually satisfy my soda cravings. I'm not a big water drinker so thats been one of the hardest things for me. Decaf iced tea has also been a go to for me.

  • I love ginger beer. Either Trader Joes brand or Goslings. I also mix sparkling water with half fruit juice or add fruit to it alone. It's refreshing and healthy! My guilty pleasure right now is lemonade though. Not usually a huge fan, but it always sounds delish!!
  • Girl, get yourself a ginger ale then! No need to suffer! With all due respect to your OB, I think he's being completely unrealistic!

  • There are lots of herbal tea that are safe for pregnancy. I've been drinking it all along and its 0 calories which is awesome
  • I love these beverages I find at the commissary, they're carbonated water with a tiny bit of juice in them, no sugar, no sweetners, no calories, nothing. They are amazing and make me feel like I'm drinking soda even though they're mostly just carbonated water, really helps me out! And I'll have Naked Juice, to get some fruits and veggies in.
  • I have been craving first thing in the morning Apple Juice and then a lot of flavored seltzer on top of regular H2O.  Some chocolate milk here and here (not much of a milk drinker before pregnancy but know I should have some for this LO).

  • I have never heard to just drink water. I have drank juice, tea, pop in moderation, milk, water, lemonade, whatever in all my pregnancies. and they are healthy!
  • I have a cup of coffee every morning, been drinking 1% milk like it's going out of style (craving it like crazy for some reason) and make sure I get tons of water every day. But like others have said if I feel like a small cup of soda or juice throughout the day I'm going to have it. I've done this with both of my previous pregnancies and I have 2 very healthy little boys.
  • Only water? That's going overboard for sure! Stay hydrated and drink what you like. I was a water only gal before pregnancy but juice seems to calm my stomach more. I usually water it down but not always.

  • @trj724‌ I'm the same way with 1% milk. I am thinking because this pregnancy is so different it might be a girl.
  • Also people should know that there are different sweeteners that the FDA and American Pregnancy Association deem ok for pregnant women (IN MODERATION OF COURSE!!!! :)) I put the link to the list at the bottom. Just some info I thought I'd pass along! :)

  • My doctor said I could have Gatorade in moderation and tea unsweetened I was told caffeine under 200 mg daily unless you have high blood pressure which I don't
  • I can't actually drink plain water right now, can't keep it down. so I'm drinking a lot of seltzer, and orange juice. ideally I'm sure we'd all stick to water, but sometimes that's just not realistic.
  • @chale3209‌ I crave it all day long. I go thru almost a gallon a week myself lol!! I've always loved milk but not like this. I never thought about it meaning girl. I have 2 boys already and never craved milk like this - ever!
  • I have been really sick from the progesterone I have to take. Water is a complete no go for me, one sip leaves me completely I'll for hours. My doctor told me to drink whatever I can, at this point liquid is liquid. She gave me the same advice with my last pregnancy and my daughter was perfectly healthy and my weight stayed fine throughouty pregnancy.
Obviously moderation is best and one I'm off the meds I'll go back to guzzling water but for now doing what works. Don't make yourself miserable over water, a little juice is not going to hurt you. (100% juice though, not the fake stuff ;)
  • I got myself a juicer and have been making my own juice, all natural and no sugar added.

I do have cravings for something fizzy every now and again and I found an all natural sparking water with only 4 ingredients and 50 calories. I forget what it is called though. When I remember I will post it :) but I did find it in the natural food section at the grocery store. You could probably find something similar at a grocery store nearest you that carries natural and organic products.
  • No juice?!? Are you severely overweight? No, I wouldn't drink sugary artificial "juice" but fresh no-sugar-added is excellent for you. That recommendation makes literally no sense to me!
  • Psh I have decaf coffee in the morning, kool aide all day (it's basically flavored water so I'm not worried) and coke with dinner! I couldn't imagine only drinking plain water for the next 7 months.

  • I highly recommend this water bottle. It's called Define. You add fruit in one side and it infuses the water with flavor without the fruit dissolving in the water. Great taste without all the sugar :)
