Will we ever decide.

My SO and I cannot decide on a name. There is one he loves, and I hate (Walter) and one I love, and he hates (Sterling).

We also have two picked out that we both like. Atticus and Russell. But I just can't see myself using them for the rest of my life!

A part of me just wants to put each name in a hat, and whatever is picked is our sons name.

I guess I just want to know, what's the best way to go about this situation. Wait until our sons here, pick a name out of a hat, pull the "I carried him for 9 months so it's what I want card" (joking) or even keep looking for names?

You can't go wrong with any of them except Sterling.

Why not narrow it down two more and then pick when he is born.

In my opinion, it's not fair to pick a name that the other person hates. Naming a child is a compromise. I think that you should stick to Atticus and Russell because you both like them and get rid of the two that are on the hate list. I would take those two names to the hospital and decide after you meet your little guy.

Out of the four names you listed, I think Atticus is by far the best.

Walter, Atticus and Russell are all fantastic. Since Atticus and Russell seem to be compromises I say take them both to the hospital

Russell is my favourite out of them. Sterling reminds me of horses and is not a very nice human first name tbh. I agree with PP's, if there's a name that either one of you hates it's not fair to the other person to use it

Agree 100%. Bring both, but my vote is Russell!!! (But of course my vote doesn't matter. Bring both and decide with your SO.)

If you have the time, I would take a break for a week or two. Seriously try not to think about baby names at all in that time (easier said than done, right?). Then come back to it and see if any of those four really speak to you and seem like the one. If you still aren't in love with any of them, keep looking. The right name is out there, and sometimes you find it and then psych yourself out about it or sometimes it takes a long time looking to find the perfect name.

FWIW, I really like Russell!

Agree with PP that you shouldn't pick a name one parent really dislikes. Take a break for a week, if you can, then look at your options with fresh eyes.

Btw, from your list I really like Russell! Sterling and Walter are both bad.

How is Walter bad? It's classic like Thomas, James, Charles. I know a couple Walters of all ages.

None of these names really strikes my fancy, and if you are having trouble agreeing or committing, why not go back to the drawing board? Some suggestions based on Sterling, Walter, Russell, and Atticus...hmmm

I like the idea of taking a break for a bit. I think I might be stressing too much on the subject. We still have 5 weeks until my EDD. Worst case scenario, we throw names in a hat and hope for the best!

Personally, I don't think any of them are bad, but I like Atticus the best from your list!

Anyway, my SO (now husband) and I walked into the hospital with 19 names, still on separate lists, two totally different naming styles, and we didn't know the sex. I wanted to walk into the hospital with 4 names (two girl, two boy) and pick after seeing the baby...but we couldn't even agree enough to combine the lists, and then I gave up trying to discuss it. Our plan was to hold out for a few hours, and then pick out a name after seeing him/her. In the end, she was named in the first 10min after she was born, I was actually the one that picked the name, and I didn't even pick on off of my list! I picked the first name off of his list, and the middle name wasn't on either (it was a name I veto'ed when I was 14 weeks pregnant, but after she was born, there was a story behind why she got the name). To this day, I don't regret her name, and I am still shocked that I didn't fight for the name that I loved. The name I did pick, totally fits her.

It will happen....your child will get a name.
