Hi, I know this sounds really bad....my neighbour bought me a strawberry buttercream Yankee candle...once I smelt it I hadda taste it...now I can't stop going bk and eating it!
Uh yea. That is likely not good for your or the baby. You might also talk to your doctor about getting cravings to eat non-food items. Even if it is a good smelling candle, that is not normal, and could indicate some sort of deficiency.
Would ask a doctor if I was seeing one today.I tried googling it but couldn't see nothing like that. I ate sponges with my first never done baby any harm but the toxins that be in candles scare me!
Pica (craving non food items) from what I hear is somewhat normal during pregnancy, though you should alert your doctor or midwife asap. They can go over strategies to curb your non food cravings. Candles often contain chemicals, fragrances, and alcohols that aren't great for you or your little one. Best of luck!
I threw it out but I know I'm gonna b nibbling on candles I see now my nxt app in until 4 weeks so I will ring doctor in morning and see if someone can speak to me. Thanks onceuponapickle I have never heard of that...now I know I'm not a freak of nature... I can put a name to it now!!
You ate sponges with your first baby? All of this sounds dangerous and eating sponges is not ok even if your baby miraculously turned out healthy. Call your doctor ASAP even an on call one and get some help.
Yeah but that was ten years ago my other pregnancys were all normal after my first one and at that time I was to embarrassed to tell anyone what I was doing as I knew it was weird. I'm phoning doctor in morning incase it's a deficiency

This! My mom gets pica when she becomes iron deficient.
@SidraJedi I actually never heard of that until today! I'm hoping it's just a sign of a deficiency so once sorted I wnt b dyin to scrap bits outta bloody candles
craving non-food items is common during pregnancy and usually indicates a deficiency. The most common being ice-chips. Yep. craving ice chips usually indicates and iron deficiency. Call your doctor, you could be seriously lacking a basic health need. Once that deficiency is filled you may not crave your candles and all will be better for you and baby.
Two potential causes of PICA: high levels of lead in your blood or low iron. Get your blood tested for these. Get help, please. Wax can get lodged in your intestines and cause blockages.
even if you are craving these things, you should know better than to not eat them. It's not food. It doesn't belong in your stomach. What you eat, the baby eats. I'm pretty sure if I caught my kid eating a candle I would take it from them and tell them to never eat it again...so why would you allow yourself to eat it?
Yes this is Pica. I suffered with an iron deficiency most of my life and craved ice constintly. It was not until I took my iron deficiency serious while trying to get pregnant did these cravings go away. I'm also afraid to say I craved soap but did not eat it. I'm sure a supplement would help a bunch. Now I can stand to hear people chew on ice.
Ladies, I get that what she was doing was odd, but pica is real.. I honestly don't think she needed to be made to feel bad about it. I know if I was her, your comments would have made me feel horrible, despite the fact that what I asked may have seemed stupid or just plain odd. A community should be about support. She came asking if anyone else had done it, (which with all our crazy cravings it could be legit.. Lol) im pretty sure she wasn't looking for sarcasm and smartass comments. we are all moms to be here, let's be friendly and supportive. That's what a great forum is all about!
Just saying! I know how I'd feel if I was her and we might all be adults here, but we ALL have feelings. And some may be more sensitive than others right now with all these hormones.
More idiots on here than I gave credit for, obviously I know it's bloody dangerous as I stated I just noticed myself doing it today n kept going back....hence why I threw it out!!! So much hormonal bitches on here...must not be getting ne attention at home!! God love Yas!!
Oh and thank you for all normal replys I've looked into it and pica explains alot xx
Oh we're the idiots?!?! Pahahahah....says the woman who posted a thread about this idiotic thing. Lol and most of us never come on here anymore since the changes to the site. Most of the good ones left. And we're left with people who post about eating freaking candles. And seriously don't bring it to a high school level saying we don't get enough attention at home. I have a wonderful husband who fulfills all my needs. Sit the hell down.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure calling us "idiots" and "hormonal bitches" is a TOU violation.
Also, learn how to spell. "Ne" is not a word. Neither is "n" "yas," or "u."
Also, if you had the common sense to throw it out, why didn't you have the common sense to know it is bad for the baby and had to come on here to ask us?
Wow. Way to be very unsupportive and judgemental. This should be a place where everyone can feel comfortable asking advice and sharing issues and concerns. This lady is not alone in her struggle, and I am at least happy to see that MOST people on here did try to be supportive and offer some valuable and helpful advice rather than criticize. It's fear of judgement that stops so many people from coming forward to get the advice, help, and support they need.

This. Seriously, I get you have pica, but don't eat a candle. Why would you need us to tell you not to eat it? Did you really think this thread was going to go well?!?
I really don't care if this thread went well or not im not out here to gain friends. I'm a grown woman who (unfortunately) had never heard of pica or anyone wanting candles to eat. If anyone had have read my comments they would clearly have seen I said.. I only noticed this today and once I did I threw the candle out....maybe I worded my question wrong.
What I ment was in the little time frame that I had done it would it have caused any damage!
If anyone found it "stupid" then no one asked them to comment. Life is hard enough, you never know what someone is going through. It takes one little comment to make or break someone's day.
@MrsRousee not only did you call people idiots and bitches, you likened their calling your lack of spelling and horrible grammar out as high schoolers? Hmmm if you know it's wrong why do it? Maybe you are the one craving attention.
Also I assure you that high schoolers would have been a great deal more 'nasty' than any comment on here has been.

Nope I get more than enough attention thank you for your concern! Awww do people not like getting mouthy replys? And as far as my grammar or spelling goes when I'm.writing on this I don't pay attention or depend on.spell check, I'm typing away on a phone to random people. I have no need to try and make myself out to be top notch incase a little troller comes up with a word I spelt wrong lol

I could list over 10 you spelt wrong. Since you where whining about 'that's not what my question was' I figured you might be interested in learning why people misunderstood you.
Most of the regulars that are still here don't mind mouthy replies, but you went past mouthy and violated TOU. That is the line that makes people mad. You want to ask silly/stupid questions and pout when people don't agree or call you on it? Great! Just try to be a bit more mature and leave the name calling out at recess.

This wreaks of dishing it out; without being able to take it.

Nah, totally normal - I personally throw down a 6 pack of scentsy melts on the way home from work. My favorite scent is pumpkin pie. If I'm still aching for more I usually take down a pillar candle and call it a night.
But seriously... Pica is a sign of a potentially serious issue- not being able to restrain your urges for sponges and wax sounds like something that your doc needs to be notified of asap.
Wow. People can be really insensitive. Obviously she was reaching out for help and she got a bunch of nasty responses. Sad.
I do hope you will contact your doctor to check your levels. My doctor asked me early on if I was craving any non food items. I knew what he was talking about because I have worked with people in the past who struggle with pica.

I hope when you threw away the candle you also had the common sense to chuck the crack pipe too
I agree with the comments about you girls being too harsh. Being pregnant is hard & it's an adjustment. Pica IS VERY REAL. she was asking for opinions, not judgements. I agree with asking your doctor - also the amount matters. Good luck!
Some of us were only commenting back on what she replied which wasn't insensitive........
She was getting defensive because people were practically making fun of her about a very serious matter. I would have gotten defensive if I were her as well.
I think the issue is all in the tone of her original question. She didn't post something that said "holy shit, I did this crazy thing today that I KNOW isn't normal. Does anyone else have experience with this??" If she'd said that, I suspect she would have gotten mostly sympathetic and informative answers about Pica.
But instead the tone of the original post was "tee hee I did this sort of weird thing! Do you think it might be bad for me?!?" The childish spelling added to the problem.
Asking if eating candles is bad for you is moronic. Acting like you don't know you shouldn't eat candles is moronic. Explaining that you know eating candles is bad and asking if anyone else has ever heard of such a thing is at least edging back towards a reasonable request. Given how she asked the question, I'm not surprised a the "wtf" responses.
There have been similar posts like this one that were equally out there. "If I smoke, is it bad for the baby?" "How many drinks can I have in 1st tri?"
I agree with @JemHolo2015 that the original text and lack of grammar made it sound really dumb.
You know what taste like the smell of those candles? The strawberry cream savers! They are yummie! Try and see if that might stop you from wanting to eat candles. There is a show on TLC that has to do with stuff like this. It's called my strange addiction. I saw where one lady was eating moth balls. She had pica as well! It's a very serious disorder. I would go to my obgyn and see if there is something you can do to stop it or at least help it.
