It has been 4 years since I had a baby and now there is a new blood test you can take after 9 weeks pregnant and find out if there are any genetic disorders and also the baby's sex!
I believe it's the fetal cell-free DNA test (most people refer to it based on brand name). In my doctor's office, it's available 10-12 weeks. I'm not if you can do it at 9 weeks. I am 40 and high-risk, so it will be covered. Can't wait!
I did this test with my first. He flagged for several markers for a chromosomal disorder on his anatomy scan, so we did the test, although I already knew the sex at that point. The one I did was called MaterniT-21 I think? He was fine, and the peace of mind of getting clear test results was wonderful. But if the results came back abnormal, the extra time to mentally prepare before the birth would have been welcome as well.
There are a couple different ones: Verfi, MaterniT-21, Panorama, and Harmony. All are only covered by insurance if you are considered high risk or AMA (35+ yrs old)
FYI I HAD THE non invasive prenatal testing with my daughter. The test came back positive for something called turners syndrome at 20 weeks. I was told the test was 99% accurate that she had the syndrome which occurs in girls being born without ovaries and who never develop sexually. No breasts etc and they can't have children. I was devastated and spent the last 20 weeks of my pregnancy mourning the loss of the child I hoped for. I didn't do an amino as I was afraid of risk especially at 20+ weeks. IT WAS AWFUL. My daughter was born in November of 2013. She appeared normal but girls who have this syndrome can appear physically normal. The doc tested her blood. The prenatal test I had was a false positive. After a lot of research I discovered I am not alone in getting false positive results from this test. It's a new test and the statistics are based on only a few years of results. If u are only doing the test to find the sex I advise you wait. If you are high risk for a chromosome problem or they saw something in a ultrasound that indicated the need for further testing that is different. My dd was born healthy and I worred needlessly for 20 weeks.

Oh you must have been so thankful she ended up being okay. I can't imagine dealing with that for so long but im so glad your daughter is okay!!
Re: finding sex of baby at 9 weeks!
Insurance rarely covers this testing for non-high risk, non-AMA pregnancy, so it costs anywhere from $795 to $2000+ out of pocket.
