How much are you paying for the birth?

Got a call from my birth center today going over what my insurance is going to cover and what I owe.. I have a $1500 deductible and then I pay 30% of the bill after that. I will owe a total of $2869(total fee being around $7500.) I'm giving birth at a birth center in NC. This is about whatever we were expecting. Just curious as to what other people are paying and where they live!

Re: How much are you paying for the birth?

  • My approximate costs from the dr were $300 for a reg delivery, but I have great insurance.

  • Wow! That's awesome.
  • I'm not sure what my cost will be yet. We have an out of pocket maximum of $5000, but I also have a health care flex spending account that I put $1500 into, so at the most, we'll pay $3500. I live in UT. I'll post more when I get an estimate from my doctor.

  • My husband is a city employee and they have switched to the worst insurance ever. In 2013 year it cost me 6k to have my daughter, this baby will cost just under 10k as long as I don't have any ER trips or ambulance rides (had both last time :( .... It's frustrating to say the least and our monthly premiums went up a lot.
  • With my first we paid a little over $3500. This time our insurance has changed slightly so I'm not sure!
  • We will owe about $1100 total after a $400 deductible and the rest of our 20 percent on the doctor's fee!
  • It cost $10+ thousand for both my boys. Luckily I have insurance that covers it all. This one will be no different.
  • Nothing. I'm going to a Native American hospital.
  • I paid nothing last time and don't plan on paying anything this time! We have Tricare.
  • My insurance covers 100% of prenatal care-so thankful to still have somewhat decent insurance after all the changes lately!
  • I have a $2500 deductible then a co-insurance maximum of $3500. In total then, $6000 in TX.
  • I am going to a Birth Center...not sure how much my insurance will pay for yet, but I'll pay no more than $4500 total. That's for all prenatal appointments and classes too! :)
  • Oh my goodness! Had no idea you could be landed with such a bill :/ I'm glad I'm in the UK...
  • Omg, pay nothing. In the UK like @JosefinK that's a lot of money to have a baby! #-o
  • $15 for first visit and then 100% covered. The School district I work for has great insurance.
  • I have a $100 deductible and a $75 a day fee for the hospital stay. And my Medicaid will pick up the rest of my deductible so I won't pay anything out of pocket. My last delivery was vaginal and a natural and it totaled for 2 days right at 4500 for the whole thing and my insurance paid for it all. I live in Alabama so our fees maybe cheaper.

Same. $300 for the birth. $500 for the copay at the hospital.
  • Some of you are so lucky!!! I agree with the comment that our healthcare is so messed up here. I pay close to $300 per month for my insurance and still come out paying several thousand dollars.
  • My first was over two years, one ER visit for blood pressure and 2 extra U/S so I paid around $5000. I'm hoping since this is all in one year it's much less this time.

  • I pay $320 per month. I so hear you on that.

  • So far I've only had to pay for my progesterone supplements. The prenatal care and homebirth should be covered 100%.

We had to pay out of pocket out last homebirth and it was about $2500 (and worth every darn penny! My midwife rocks and let me make payments long after my son was born).

I do have to purchase a home birth kit separate which I think cost me around $70 my last birth. So I anticipate paying less than $100. If an emergency should arise I still shouldn't have anything to pay. This is a major blessing. This is our sixth and medical costs can add up SO fast.

WOW I had no idea it was like that in the US, or what the costs were like.  I live in Canada so it's completly covered I had no idea how lucky we are!  I have additional insurance through my work (that they pay for) on top of what you are entilled to just by living here so I also get some extra's like a private room, my choice of a doctor or a midwife, as well as a doula.  I can't imagine what all those things would cost...
  • Fortunately nothing. I will be delivering at the hospital DH works at so it's all covered. For my previous two births (in a different state, different hospital) I had to pay a $500 copay for the hospital stays.

    $0
I can't imagine paying thousands out of pocket.
  • My out of pocket for prenatal care and delivery is$844. I'm not sure what the bill for the hospital will be just yet.
  • I have awful insurance. We planned to switch plans next year before we had a baby. I have a $2500 deductible that I will pay to the ob office. After that I will pay 25% of any charges.
  • @ellebxo26‌ where in NC are you?! Im a fellow Carolinian ☺️
  • @seg6394‌ I'm from a small town called Granite Falls which is outside of a slightly smaller town, Hickory, about an hour from Charlotte and Asheville. What about you??
  • Tricare here as well, thank god. Military life is tough but the insurance is a super great benefit, especially for this time in our lives!
  • I have a high deductible with 20% copay, so my insurance estimate came out to 4300-4700 out of pocket :( thankfully my husband has been banking away money on his Health Savings Account so we have enough pretax savings to pay for those out of pocket medical cost. I didn't even know he had done that so it was a happy surprise to ease the shock of how expensive our costs are.
  • I hope not a lot! I had a surgery back in the summer to correct some fertility issues and the hospital didn't bill me because my husband is an employee there. They just wrote it off to my understanding. I'll just have to pay my doctors fees.
  • My DD was 5200. I'm not sure if I want to give birth in a hospital, or risk a birth center transfer again, so I have no idea how much it will be this time.
    Anniversary
  • @ellebxo26‌ awesome!! I've heard it's really pretty out there! My boss is actually from Hickory. I live in Raleigh right now, but my husband is stationed on the coast so I'll be heading that way once he gets home. Glad to know I've got at least one Carolina girl B-)

$250 total for prenatal care and birth. We just switched to this new great insurance from DH's new job. Just in time too!! ;)

Our other insurance would have cost us $2,000 total. I live in Texas.
  • Like Becky360, I'm lucky to have good insurance through my school district. DD cost me $20 to have. I only had to pay the first copay for the doctor's visit and then nothing after that. I have United Health Care.

  • My SIL and friend in the UK didn't have to pay anything, but also had to share a room with several other new moms. I don't want that. My other friend in the UK had a home birth because she didn't want to go to the hospital, so the midwife came to her and she had nitrous for pain which I think is a great way to labor without an epi. I like that the midwives from NHS visit at home though. Obvi our ob's don't do that in the US.
