My doctor told me when I take my test to not eat anything with too much sugar the night before or the morning of. It can effect your results and then you'd have to retake it. And the second time around instead of waiting an hour. You have to wait three hours.
And I hear the drink is horrible.

  • My doctor gave me a diet list for the night before and morning of- thank god it's at 9am and not later in the day! The list said stay away from all foods with sugar :(
  • Well crap :/. I ate 3 teriyaki  wings an hour and a half ago.
  • Nothing but water for the rest of the night. I think i'll be ok.,just hungry. The brownie will be going with me tomorrow so I can eat it right after lol.
  • I failed the one hour, and had to do the 3 hour this morning. It was a brutal wait, the drink tastes okay, but made my stomach upset. Will get those results tomorrow morning. I'd advise to just eat clean, but not too far off from what you normally eat, because the accuracy of the test is equally important as passing it. Good luck!
  • I failed my one hour on Monday. I have to take the 3hr on Feb 16th. Hope I don't fail again! I eat pretty healthy but haven't been exercising much.

  • Definitely do not eat sugar before the test! I drank OJ before my 1hr due to my blood sugar being low that morning. ( I am hypoglycemic: low blood sugar problems) I knew it would make me fail and told the technician the same thing but they didn't reschedule. I barely failed it but still failed. I had to take my 3 hr today. It was a blast:/ Hoping I passed it!!! Pretty sure I did my first and last # was fine just waiting result on the middle two.

  • Failed my first test. They double checked it and then called and scheduled me my 3 hour test in the morning. I'll let you know how it goes.
  • I wouldn't eat sugar the night before. I just took my test this morning and have to wait a couple days for the results. I took it at 8am so it was super easy to fast. The hardest part was drinking the drink within five minutes. I had to wait two hours and then they drew my blood. Fingers crossed all of you waiting have a good result!
  • I ate ice cream the night before and passed...I also ate that morning, Cheerios...

  • You can have hard boiled eggs in the am cause u will feel naseous about 20 minutes after u drink it. Get the orange one if u can. It tastes like a melted flavor ice. Its not bad at all. If you feel sick ask for a cold compress and put it on the back of your neck
  • I take mine at 11am so not quite sure what to eat for breakfast. Fruit has natural sugar, so that's probably a bad idea. And I hate oatmeal. This should be fun
  • If you are just doing the one hour test dinner is fine. My doctor told me that I could still eat the morning of just not anything sugary. Breakfast was eggs and toast with a glass of water.

  • Took my one hour today. Failed it by two freaking points! :( back sometime in the next week to do the 3 hour. Not looking forward to being stuck three times when once was bad enough. :( kind of a stupid reason to cry but I could literally cry right now. this pregnancy has been pretty good thus far why does there have to be a stick in the spokes now?! Gahhhh!! I'm probably just being a big baby about it but I really don't want to have to drink the stuff for the three hour. The one hour was not bad, just made me woozy afterwards but everyone keeps telling me the three hour is bad :/

That sucks!!! I've heard from others that the worst part about the 3 hr test is not eating for several hours before, so make sure that you set your appointment for as early as possible.

  • I just did my two-hour one today (my hospital network does a two-hour, not three-hour), and my doctor told me to bring a snack for afterwards, and I would highly recommend that.  My appointment was at 7:40am, so at my 12-hour cutoff for fasting last night, I had some toast with a lot of peanut butter to fill me up for as long as possible.  And then I wasn't completely starving in the morning.

And for the drink, I thought it would be so much worse (orange first time and lemon-lime today) since people talk about how terrible it is, but both were no problem.

FYI..they stick you 4 times. Once at the beginning plus 3 on the hour.
The worst part is not eating that long.
Or even worse. .. you have GD.

  • I think it's really super important to keep your diet as close to normal as possible because the results of this test are important. My doctor only advised me to not eat after midnight the day before. Waiting on results now, and I hope I passed because I do NOT want to do the three hour. I hear some people say to eat veggies, and a bland diet beforehand, but I think that's kind of cheating the test. You want to make sure that on a normal diet you can still pass it.

Oh no! :( DH and I decided that we will go back Friday to do this one so I will have to wear my big girl panties and let them stick me. :/ when in reality all I want to do is curl up in a ball and tell them they can't! Haha the eating part will definitely be hard! Can you have water if you are fasting? Or is it off limits as well? I ask because I work until late at night so it would at least be something to fill me if I can have it and I also take my prenatal right before bed which may be at like 1 or so in the morning after the cutoff time :/
  • For water, I was just told small sips and that's it.
  • U can eat whatever u want the day before the test... They say if u r only getting the 1 hour test there is no restrictions but if u r going for the 3 hour test, u can't have anything after midnight... Just make sure u have something to eat after ur blood is drawn and before u leave... U might feel crappy afterwards. I had to be tested during the first trimester since my family history is strong with having diabetes... But they just told me at my last appointment I have to be tested again at the end of this month... Just to be sure I don't have gestational diabetes.
  • My doctor didn't give me any instructions, just told me that I'll be doing the test at the end of the month.
  • I go tomorrow morning. Hoping i dont have to do the 3 hr test

Last time the 1 hour made me feel dizzy
  • I just had this done (the 2 hour test...with fasting). The orange drink was not bad at all. It tasted like a sweeter Gatorade. DO be sure to drink plenty of water though, otherwise the blood draws will be impossible! I learned this from experience!
  • I was put on a special diet for 3 days before my 3 hour test. It was basically a normal diet but didn't contain a ton of sugar. My fasting cut off was at 12am the night before and my appointment was at 8 am the next morning. I was told water was fine. I had the lime to drink which wasn't bad. I did however eat a snack around 11:30 before my cut off to ward off passing out. ( I have low blood sugar and tend to pass out if I go long periods without eating). I made it through the test without passing out. I do highly recommend a snack to eat right after the test is over until you get some food in you. My DH and I forgot my snack and I almost fainted in the restaurant waiting on my food. ( again low blood sugar issues) The worst part of the 3hr is the fasting. When you fast and then drink the stuff it can make you feel crappy because you have an empty stomach. I still have not gotten my results and the waiting is driving me nuts!

  • I'm working on the three hour right now. I wasn't even allowed to have water after midnight. One draw down and three to go. Let's just say I saw a lady walk by with a cart of food and cried because I can't have anything until after noon :(

  • The 1 hour test is a joke. They canceled my appt and were able to squeeze me in the next day. Of course, I didn't know about the new appt until the hour before and had cereal/coffee that morning. I also had ice cream the night before.

Well I failed. Meaning I got 135 when the cut off is 130. Everywhere online says 140. I know from taking care of my diabetic brother growing up that 135 is not a bad blood sugar level. It's when you get closer to 200 where you should be worried. My coworker got 138 and declined taking the 2nd test. Needless to say I will also be declining the test. I don't have the pto days to waste because the hospital wants to pad their wallet with lab fee reimbursements from insurance companies.
  • I got through the three hour test okay. It was a long wait and the multiple sticks on both arms sucked but they said I passed all four tests with flying colors! Thank goodness!! My arms are sore as crap now though. That is the only bad part, but on the plus side I don't have gb. Hoping all you ladies get positive test results as well!!!
  • You are suppose to eat like normal before your one hour test. Fasting can mess with your results.
  • Was so happy to find out I passed! My mom had GD and I was so worried I would have it. My doctor said the results would take a couple days and I ended up calling after two days on Thursday. Thankfully they had the results back but hadn't called me yet. She was out on Friday and wouldn't be back until Tuesday so I was really glad I called and didn't have to worry for four more days!
  • I did my 1hour on Friday and Friday night had a voicemail from the nurse asking me to call back. So naturally I'm freaking out thinking my number was super high and I still have to wait till Monday to find out. Really don't think I'll survive the three hour test, since I almost fainted and threw up immediately after my blood draw for the 1hour. :(

I had my one hr thurs morning and they called Friday and left a voicemail asking me to call back. But I missed the call till after office hrs. Thankfully the hospital I work at is connected so I looked up my own lab results Fri night at work and know I passed with flying colors. I'll call them back tomorrow but I'm not worried. So try not to stress momma, just cause they left you a voicemail doesn't mean anything is wrong! :-)

Edited because spelling is hard. Haha

Thank you so much for this! I've been googling and over analizing everything all weekend but I don't understand how I could have gd, since my blood pressure has never been higher than normal and I've gained less than 10lbs so far?! But you've helped me relax a bit! :)
  • They finally called and told me I passed my 3hr! So glad.

  • I have to do the three hour tomorrow. I'm so bummed. My 1 hour number was pretty high too, so now I'm worried that I really do have it even though I don't have any of the risk factors and I've felt great the whole pregnancy. Ready to just get it over with though I guess...

Just found out I failed my 3 hr. :( Honestly, I was surprised because I only failed my 1 hr by 1 point (I scored 136 and my dr's cutoff is 135), but I'm glad they caught it for my baby's sake. Just feeling a little overwhelmed and nervous about the diagnosis...

Don't freak out!!! I passed but was one point away from failing. I'm treating it like I have it, since I know I was close (and so similar to your score). I am pretty much cutting out bread/pasta/sugar carbs. Realistic switches like egg/ham in a tortilla for breakfast instead of cereal, chicken and veggies or taco salas or turkey burger w sandwhich thin buns, etc. I've actually been staying consistent with my weight and I know I'd have been gaining (nothing abnormal) if I wasn't eating such high protein/veggie diet.

Anyways-stay positive and it's not too bad making some switches for a few mths...maybe less baby weight to lose later and delivering a little smaller of a baby this way :)

This is the practice where I am at too.

Different states have different levels.  In MN its 140 but other states is 130.  With DD I got 131.  My doctor wanted me to go get the 3 hour because I would have failed in other states and am overweight but I declined.
