  • Don't count kicks as babies move have their own routine...by now you should know your babies routine when they move the most. If you normally feel them when you wake up and you havnt lay down drink cold drinks and relax! If you don't feel anything then just ring midwife or doctor! Hope everything is ok!
  • My doctor told me to always call if I am concerned about movement. If baby is facing toward your back you are likely to feel less movement (according to my OB nurse). If you are really worried call anyways for peace of mind. Hoping that you and baby are ok!
  • Last time I went in my OB told me drink or eat something that normally gets the baby to move and lay on your left side. It can take 2 hours to get the movement since new studies are showing that fetuses can sleep for up to 90 minutes in one sitting so you may lay down just as they are going for a nap. I drink lemonade when I get worried cause gives my baby hiccups and if they are hiccuping you know they are breathing lol!! Best thing you can do is call your L&D and ask their opinion. Where I'm at they have triage that gladly will monitor you for sometime no problem. They should want to destress you so should do something. Best of luck to you!
  • I bug my little dude until he moves for me, if you're worried I wouldn't hesitate call your dr

  • This just happened to me today as well. He made his kick counts in 25 mins but they were smaller movements. I knew there was no reason to worry but movements just weren't as much today. I called and talked to the on call OB and then felt much better. Any movements count big or little and could just be the baby's position. Call your OB.

I guess all the doctors and midwives throughout this country are wrong then since kick counts are recommended by every doctor and baby book out there.
Kick counts do have limited usefulness ...ACOG has no recommendation for or against their use. https://www.jfponline.com/index.php?id=22143&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=174294

My dr and mfm all tell me to do them. If it isn't useful why mention it at all?

I will tell you that I quit the kick count at 2-3. I use them just to know that my babies are still moving.
  • I just play poke the baby, and when he pokes back I know he's still alive and well.
  • I am a high risk pregnancy at age 46.  My doctor says that you should feel at least 6 movements an hour.

The answers above tells you why you shouldn't count kicks as people are always given different numbers for healthy movements! Nearly half the amought!! You should know your babies movements and their routine and if you don't feel your normal movements more or less you should call your doctor or midwife!
  • Call your doctor. I woke up one morning at 38 weeks with my doctor and felt like something was off. She hadn't woken me up moving in the night. I did kick counts and drank cold and still could barely feel her. Doctor sent me to l&d where they monitored me and wanted to send me home because she had a heartbeat but I wasn't comfortable with it so they ordered an ultrasound where the tech noticed she wasn't really moving at all. My doctor decided to induce and when she was delivered they found a true knot in her cord, that left unaddressed for a few hours more could have ended tragically. Always follow your maternal instinct.
  • Doc tells me to count 10 per 2 hours....drink oj or eat something sweet and lay down on your side for awhile. My baby girl gets mad when I lay down, that's when she kicks me the most. I don't feel her much when I'm in the car or walking cause the rocking soothes her. If there's no movement all day, from waking to going to sleep, that's when I would call.

I just called because I had felt less movement since yesterday and they told me to come in right away. The midwife mentioned that if you don't feel anything within an hour or two, you should call. They will suggest some things to try, but if you're still not feeling anything, come in. They don't want to risk it.

BTW - the reason for less movement was because the baby dropped. May be the same for you - but it's worth calling!
  • I don't know if anyone has already posted this, but I found it to be a good resource about kick counting.
