NWMR: Anyone have a Mirena IUD?

Hi everyone,

I know this is working mom related, but thought you ladies might have some feedback.  I was wondering what everyone's experience has been with the Mirena?  I got a Paraguard (copper IUD) 2 years ago, but it made my period unbearably heavy and long and it was NOT like that before the Paraguard.  I had it switched to the Mirena today.  I'm most concerned with the side effect of acne or weight gain, which is why I originally went with the Paraguard over the Mirena.  My doctor assures me that there is no medical literature that shows a correlation between the Mirena and acne and weight gain, but I'm still concerned.  Did anyone have either of these issues, or any other issues, with the Mirena?

Thanks!

  • I went through a year's worth of migraine medicine in 2.5 mos. Needless to say, I had it removed. I was completely bummed though. Such an awesome idea if it works for you.

  • @MommyAtty Ugh, I didn't even think about that being an issue, but I guess it could be for me as I have a long history of headaches and seeing a neurologist for them.  I've been getting Botox injections for headaches for a few years now which has dimished them to basically nothing.  It is really amazing because medications did not seem to help.  If I get headaches again, that will be awful.  Did they go away when you had it removed?

  • I love mine.  I've had two.  I do have occasional acne and have gained weight since having babies...a few pounds.  Can't really say whether it is related or not.  Regardless, I always thought i would have my husband get snipped when this one expired, but I am seriously considering just getting another.  It's so easy and I have no periods which I love, love, love.
  • I"m on my 2nd mirena.  I love it.  I haven't had true AF since before I got pg with my twins.  I don't have any issues with acne, but I have gained weight.  I blame it on eating/drinking too much, not the mirena.  I did buckle down and lose quite a bit of weight with it in.  I've had migranes, but none in the last 6 mo or so.  I'll probably get a 3rd one when this one expires next year.

Yes, they did. If you had problems with bcps and migraines, you could have the same issue with Mirena. Also, getting migraines with Mirena means your odds of stroke will increase with any hormonal birth control. So bummer! We are definitely done, so I'm thinking of going with the implants that basically block your tubes. Ugh. Need to figure something out.
  • I got an IUD after I had my LO, and I haven't had any issues with it. Occasionally I have a pimple or two, but no more than I did with AF.
  • Thanks everyone! I guess I will just wait and see how it goes.  I don't seem to have any issues so far.

  • I got one in December and I love it. No side effects and I've actually lost two pounds. Again, my Dr said that there is no literature that correlates Mirena and weight gain. Only downside was the insertion which was incredibly painful. Other than that, I have been very happy with it.
  • I had a merena for 4 years (removed to start TTC) and I loved it. My periods went from heavy with terrible cramps to very slight spotting being the only sign (not even worth a panty liner). I never had any acne but did gain weight (though I'm quite sure it was due to my eating habits and not the merena).

I plan on getting another when we are done having children, even if hubby gets a vasectomy (the lack of periods being the big draw).

  • Mirena has a progestin in it, so acne is definitely possible. Weight gain is rare...and usually only 5-10lbs. My SIL is on her 2nd mirena. She has high blood pressure, so she has to use that (can't use anything with estrogen in it....until she gets Essure or her husband gets the V). She likes how convenient it is, but she feels like she also struggles with vaginitis now.

  • If you're done having kids, read about Essure to block tubes and ablation to eliminate/reduce periods.
