I can't figure out what's going on with DS. Starting last Friday, he is taking less than his usual 30 oz. per day, sometimes as few as 25 oz. He normally chugs his 6 oz. bottles, so this is definitely a change of behavior for him.
Earlier last week, he had a two-day growth spurt (ate more frequently/more per feeding and was fussy, slept a lot, etc.). He seems otherwise fine: no fever or extra fussiness. He starts out feeding fine, but toward the end of the bottle just starts acting like he doesn't want any more (pushes the nipple out of his mouth), or gets sleepy and starts dribbling down his chin like crazy. He still has five-six wet diapers per day, and is pooping regularly.
Normal? Cause for a call to the pedi? I thought babies were supposed to eat more, not less, as they get older!
Re: Post three-month growth spurt... Lack of appetite?
"4. Natural decline in the rate of growth
Your baby will not continue to gain weight at the same rate as he did in the early weeks and months of life. Most babies show a natural decline in weekly weight gains around the age of 5 or 6 months. A further decline can also be seen at around the age of 9 months and again at around 12 months.Larger babies often display this natural decline in growth at a much earlier age, sometimes as young as 3 months. As your baby's rate of growth declines, so too will his appetite and the amount of milk (breast milk or infant formula) he drinks will also decrease. Because he's no longer growing as quickly, he needs less milk. (Wait for him to let you know when he doesn't want as much.)"
That is very interesting info, VAAnnie, re: the decline in growth.
My DS is doing the eating less thing as well. He used to take 5-6 oz a bottle with no problem. Now, he takes about 4. I'm lucky if he gets 24 oz in a 24 hr period.
He is still having wet diapers out the wazoo and his urine smells very strong.
He weighed 12lbs 8 oz at his 2 month appt. What did yours weigh then?
Thanks for posting that VAAnnie.
Elisa312: I could have totally written that same post! I'm not sure DS even got 24 oz today either - but he's had wet & poopy diapers all day. At his 2 mo appt he weighed 12lbs and 9oz.
