Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby eczema

Has anyone had a baby that has a severe case of eczema?  My baby just turned 7 months and has had skin issues since about 3-4 months.  She is allergic to milk, so she's on a prescription formula, Neocate.  We have been to a couple dermatologists, allergists, immunologists and nothing has helped.  She takes an antihistamine daily, but that doesn't even offer any relief anymore.  She scratches nonstop, especially when she cries.  I've tried every kind of lotion out there, use special detergent, etc.  I just want to my baby to stop suffering.  Any advice?

Re: Baby eczema

  • My 7 month old son has severe eczema too, we're still battling it.  He's on prescription Nutramigen for formula.  We've been going to a pediatric dermatologist, and have now tried 3 different ointments.  Desonide worked the best, but she said we can only use it 7 days in a row.  The day after we stopped, he broke right back out again.  We're currently using 2% hydrocortisone.  His cheeks have also been infected twice with staph, so he just finished his second round of Augmentin.

Long story short, I know exactly what you're going through.  It's so incredibly frustrating to see him red and itchy, we haven't been able to calm it down completely.  Ugh :(

  • My nephew has it so bad that he would scratch and bleed all the time.  They spray Benedryl topical on it and it helps with the itching and pain.

  • DS just has little patches, but it really bothers him when he's tired, he'll rub and scratch. I know that scratching makes the itch worse, so I put gloves on him before I put him down for a nap and bedtime.  It helps to keep the itching from getting terrible.  I use 1% hydrocortisone occasionally and Aquaphilic after baths.  So far, we've kept it under some control lately.

  • Thanks for the replies.  My heart hurts for you, it's been awful.  I've tried all of the above too.  Did the mittens too until she figured out how to get them off.  Do you know why crying makes them scratch more?
  • I am so sorry, that is so hard to deal with :( LO has it all over too - I would say it is probably a moderate case though, it doesn't sound quite as bad as yours. I am sure you have - but have you tried Eucerin? I have been doing a full body massage with LO (7 months) twice a day every day for the past couple of months and it has helped A LOT! I spread it on pretty thick and leave him naked for a few minutes before getting him dressed. He has really started to like it and I think it feels really good on his skin.

  • We went through this with our first. Had to cosleep with her or else she'd scratch to the point of bleeding during the night.
It wasn't until we figured out all 3 of her food allergies that her skin cleared up.
Good luck. It's incredibly frustrating and heartbreaking to see your little one go through this.
    Keep looking for answers.

  • My 8mo just got it after showing no previous symptoms-we think the flare up was when we introduced dairy (cheese). We found out he is allergic to cows milk & since cutting out all dairy & using Vaseline all over 2x day he is so much better
  • We've had a lot of great luck with Aveeno Baby Eczema lotion.  You can find it at the drugstore or Target. They make a body wash too for bath time, but I don't really love it like I do the lotion.  Hope you can find a solution!
  • My older son has had it since 4 weeks old. My pedi said to use the eucerin cream that comes in the tub (like cream cheese) and then top to with aquaphor. It worked for him. The winter is the worst still. Summer is so much better :)

  • My baby had really bad eczema at 4 months. We did a blood allergy panel which came back negative for any allergens. A friend of mine recommended vanicream. After using vanicream for 2 days all her eczema patches went away. Now she is 7 months and we haven't had an outbreak since. You can find it at Walgreens.
  • Try Mitten Sleeves when your baby can't stop itching. At least she won't hurt herself or leave scars. You can find them on Amazon as well.
