Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding troubles

i have an almost 8 week old son and we are still having breastfeeding issues. Right now I am battling Thrush and it's super painful however I'm still pumping and breastfeeding. One of our issues is that my son will latch, eat well for a few minutes and then start to pull his head back like he is arching his back. When he does this, it pulls on my breast and he is left with basically just the nipple in his mouth. This is obviously very painful (especially since one nipple is pink and irritated and the other is cracked and blistered). When he does this I will break the latch and get him to relatch although usually he gets lazy or irritated and doesn't want to open his mouth wide The second issue we have is that he will sometimes bite down on my nipple and jerk his head back pulling on my nipple. I have had bleeding from him doing this before.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so, do you have any advice?

Re: Breastfeeding troubles

  • To me, it sounds like it could be gas pains.  I would try to burp frequently.  Also, maybe try the cross-cradle position so you can support his head with your hand.  That way when he goes to pull back, you can resist his movement, and then break the latch yourself using your finger to prevent him from pulling.  GL!  I survived the thrush and cracked nipples around that same time, and am still BF my 21 month old.  You can do this!

  • I also think it might be gas. I have always had to burp my LO frequently because of the same behavior
