I deal with anxiety and here lately my stress level at work has been to the point that I could go postal. My doctor said that a glass of wine once or twice a week is perfectly fine. But I also took time to research it myself as well as get some other medical opinions. All of which agreed that a glass a of red wine is okay. I usually don't even drink an entire glass and will sip on water while drinking my glass of wine. I also chose the wine with the lowest alcohol content.
I've allowed myself a couple of ounces of wine with a particularly nice meal or if my husband happened to open a nice one. I believe it is safe in a very moderated amount.
You could also go on youtube and look for 'Hypnotherapy' They are relaxation exercises, where the woman or man speaks very slowly and walks you through an 'Imagine you are lying on a beach, listening to the waves lapping on shore...' type of scenario.
I've been a bit anxious too, especially at night, when everything is so quiet and I've felt it really helps me to just let go.
It makes me a little concerned how many people say "well if your doctor says it's okay it is". There is so much differing of opinion between doctors and I personally trust my doctor, but still research things on my own before making most medical decisions. Yes, your doctor has a lot of medical knowledge but no one is an expert on everything. Please research some of this stuff. And research your research to find out who is funding that research.
Yes, I agree with this! History teaches us that many things that may have once been considered safe are not.... And there is such a diverse range of doctor opinions, people really need to be more responsible in making decisions than blindly doing what they are told. And I bet not one person would find a pediatrician who would support alcohol during pregnancy....
Yeah I bet you also couldn't find one pediatrician that blames FAS on the mother having one glass of wine a day.

My mom's OB told her the occasional glass of wine was OK (that was 30 years ago). My doctor (present time) has given me the OK. My BFF's (different) doctor also told her that instead of taking medication for anxiety, she should have a glass of wine.
So yea... I bet you could very easily find a pediatrician that not only says it's OK - but that has probably done it themselves as well. We're talking about one glass of red wine on occasion. Not binge drinking tequila and vodka tonics.
Just as there is in the medical community, there are obviously fundamental differences of opinion here. I just really do not understand the risk to a developing fetus' health for one glass of wine. There are so many other ways to de-stress that pose no negative side effects.

We get it. You are anti any amount of drinking during pregnancy. Let it go already.
I think a small glass every now and then isn't a big deal.
However, I think it's a little strange that a doctor is telling a patient who is dealing with anxiety and panic attacks to drink a glass. If your anxiety and panic attacks are severe enough that other things you have tried aren't helping, I would look into whether there are any meds that you can take. For some, the benefits to meds may outweigh the risks especially if the anxiety is a daily thing.

Oh good. I am glad my point that is widely supported by empirical research is understood.
This sounds strange but I have taken a Benedryl when I've had those moments when I think I'm going to have a panic attack and it helps calm me down and relax me.
I personally think having a glass here and there is no big deal, I had one glass so far and don't plan on having much more until after my son is here. But I agree with PP, you need to research yourself to make sure this is the right decision for you. I also think you should try other ways to relax if you're having anxiety. Pregnancy Yoga DVDs are a life saver.
During the beginning I would have a glass a week, and I know plenty of people with healthy babies who have done this. Unfortunately now I get such horrible heartburn and acid reflux from everything so I don't anymore, but my father is a dr and felt totally comfortable with me having an occasional glass.
I've had the occasional sip or two of craft beer (beer snobs what what!) here and there, but haven't felt the need for anything more than that. And I had no taste for it in first tri.
That said, I would be wary about using it to treat anxiety/panic. There are medications that are safe to take in pregnancy-- have you considered seeing a psychiatrist?

I shared a glass of wine WITH a pediatrician on Thursday night, who is also pregnant :P. So yeah.
