3 hr glucose! Boo

So I barely failed my 1hr test and now I am taking my 3hr test. I am hypoglycemic ( low blood sugar). My blood sugar was low the morning of my 1hr and I drank OJ before the appointment because I was on the verge of passing out! Combine that with the Orange syrup they make you drink and my sugar spiked before stabilizing. I did mention it to the technician that morning hoping they would reschedule but they didn't. I only failed by 9. In the past when I have taken 3hr fasting tests I have always passed out. T&Ps I don't pass out and pass the test are appreciated!

  • I just got back the results from my 3 hour and I passed. I remember that on the day of the 1 hr test, I had fasted and after drinking that nasty stuff felt really sick and clammy. I have heard alot of people fail the 1 hour and then pass the 3 hour. Good luck!

Thank you!!! I have never failed a 1hr before. I am just hoping I don't pass out on them! They used to give me fasting tests when I was little to check my sugar and I passed out all the time so they stopped. Last one I had was at 18! So I am nervous! I just passed out at Lowes a few weeks ago because my blood sugar dropped too low. Hoping I don't pass out and my results are normal!

  • heh...  I've got a good story about this one!  See, I'm allergic to citrus. And while there's no TRUE citrus in those drinks, drinking something that TASTES like orange just makes me want to massively puke. Though I imagine that the nasty sweet syrupy drink they give you (flat Tang, anyone?) makes anyone want to puke!

So anyway, I'm living at the hospital right now. The 1-hour test here is NOT a fasting test, they just give it about 2-3 hours after breakfast. (or, geniuses, you could just do it as a fasting at 8am...) it's supposed to be a 50g sugar drink. My nurse brings me the 75g drink. I start chugging and gagging, but I've got about 1/3 of it down, and she comes back in and says, "How are you doing with that?" I told her it was going as well as can be expected. She tells me to stop, because she was supposed to give me the 50g drink. I'm like "Okay, take what's left, measure it, and find out what 2/3s would be, and I'll drink the rest to give me 50g." She said that the doctors wouldn't think it was accurate, so we'll just re-do the whole thing tomorrow with the 50g drink. OMG... so I had to drink the nasty drink all over again! At least I passed, or I would have had to do the 75g drink AGAIN the next day, fasting.

Omg! That sucks! I would have died! Yeah if I had fasted before my 1hr I would have passed no problem! My 1hr was scheduled at 10:30. So basically I dropped my DS at preschool at 9:00, got breakfast at 9:30, went straight to my OB appointment where I felt dizzy, drank OJ and then went straight to the lab for my 1hr test. My sugar was all out of whack! She didn't check my blood sugar before the 1hr. Just gave me the Orange crap and then did my blood an hour later. Today was rough! I had to drink twice the amount I did at the 1hr and it was lime instead of orange ( tastes like flat sprite). Then she drew blood four times: 1 before drinking the stuff, then every hour for 3hrs. She didn't finger stick me either but actually drew vials of blood. She told me my first # before I drank the stuff and then my last number after the last stick but she couldn't tell me my 2 middle numbers because she said they send it off to a different lab??? So I won't know if I passed until tomorrow or Friday. I though it was weird they didn't test the 2 middle numbers themselves but I am not a lab tech or nurse! Lol I did decent during the test but afterwards before I could get food in me I got the shakes really bad and almost passed out again. I got some food and felt a little better but have been pretty weak and sick all afternoon. Hoping I feel better tomorrow!

Failed my 1hr. Going Feb 16 to do the 3hr. I didn't pass out in the 1hr but i pass out easily. T&P for the next test!

I pass out easily too! I wasn't allowed to eat after 12am the night before the test so my nurse advised me to eat a snack right before the cut off time in hopes of warding off the passing out. It must have helped because this is the first time I have not passed out during a 3hr fasting test! I did not eat after the cut off though and did ok with the test. Although I should have taken a snack for right after the test was over because we went to get lunch and the service was a little slow. I almost passed out waiting for my food! However I am hypoglycemic which means my blood sugar drops very easily and is why I got so sick after the test because I had been way too long without eating! If I don't eat 5-6 small meals a day or make sure to snack in between meals than my blood sugar drops too fast resulting in me passing out. That's why I was so concerned that I would pass out during the test. My sister had a 3hr and did fine! She did get nauseous from the syrup which is the most common complaint. The only advice I can give you is eat a snack about an hour before cut off time if you are concerned about passing out and eat right after the test is over so you don't feel too dizzy! Just do not eat after the cut off period because it can mess up your results!!!! Try not to be nervous! I know it's hard but maybe take something to pass the time to take your mind off of it. I was lucky to have my DH with me to keep me company today. Good luck on your test! I will keep you in my T&Ps!

Amen! Lol They check it though because some women develop gestational diabetes which can cause problems for momma and baby. I agree though that sometimes in pregnancy you start to feel like a human pin cushion! Or at least I get stuck a lot with needles due to issues but it's ok! It's all worth it for my LO to be healthy:)

Also the 1hr isn't that bad! It's the 3hr that really stinks;) I am sure you will do fine at the 1hr.

I hope so! My cut off time I was given is 9pm the night before ahhh I really love food!
  • Wow that's really early! Are you having a 1hr or 3hr? I didn't have a cut off or fasting period with my 1hr. ( Just no sugar before the 1hr.... Which is why I failed...drank OJ which has a lot of sugar...totally my fault) With the 3hr I fasted but my cut off was 12am last night and my appointment was for 8am this morning.

  • i had to take the 3 hr with my son and it nearly killed me. i layed out front dry heaving in the grass the whole time and almost passed out several times. i just took the 1 hr one with this pregnancy yesterday and i was told that if i failed, i could request to do the 1 hr again before jumping right to the 3 hr. they called today and said i passed (thank god), but i was fully prepared to redo the 1 hr :)

  • I need to be whiny for a minute. 3 hours of your life may be bad, but getting the diagnosis is a little worse. It's something you can live with, but I'm a little annoyed with everyone complaining about 3 hours of their life.
Sorry....GD is a bad topic for me today since MFM dr. wants me on meds today to control it. I feel helpless that I can't control it myself. So passing the 3 hour test sounds good to me right now.

  • Got my results today. I took the test Friday morning, I had a veggie omlette with black coffee and then drank the Orange drink. I gagged a few times but I've had worse. My results were 133. My doc doesn't like anything over 129 but the nurse said that depending on which doc signed off on my results it was up to them to decided if I had to take the 3 hr because I was so borderline. In the end I guess I passed bc the called to say it was all good. With my first baby I failed the 1 hr but passed the 3 hr ( but borderline).

It's totally understandable! I didn't care about the the 3hrs of time it took at all! I just didn't want to pass out or fail it! I tend to pass out easily and just passed out a few weeks ago due to my sugar, ended up in the ER all day with it. I agree 3hrs of time is nothing;) The process of the test just makes me extremely sick due to it messing my sugar up for days afterwards. Trust me I understand all about sugar problems as I have been hypoglycemic my entire life. I have had many glucose test, passed out, etc. There are days my blood sugar is so low that I can hardly function because I am too weak, dizzy, shaking, etc. Trust me I wasn't complaining about the 3hr time limit or even the test really. Just was more or less asking for prayers that I didn't fall out again and have another trip to the ER in less than a month for sugar. Trust me having hypoglycemia is no joke. It's considered a form of diabetes and has to be managed daily as well. If not there can be serious complications. I really was bummed I failed the 1hr because I know with fasting sugar tests ( which I have had my entire life) they tend to make super sick for days. You right the GD diagnosis is definitely worse than the test and it's making super nervous waiting on my results! I certainly don't want to deal with my blood sugar going from being too low to high. I hate that you are going through GD and having to start meds. I know it's not fun! It's ok to be whiny. I will keep you in my T&Ps.

T&P to you hun. I barely passed my 1 hr too and now have to take my 3 hr on the 11th. Not excited because I have PCOS which causes issues with this sort of thing.

I really hope everything goes well for you and that you pass it and don't pass out!!!

Thank you!! I had my test today and luckily I did not faint on them! Although I almost fainted right afterwards during lunch waiting on my food. DH fed me and took me home. I have been pretty sick, having the shakes and weak all day but I am finally starting to feel a little better! I hope I pass but I won't know until tomorrow or Friday. I am trying to keep positive thoughts though. I will be praying for you as well that you pass and have no issues! Also will be praying for your PCOS! ( what is that by the way if you don't mind me asking?)

Crossing my fingers for your results to be perfect! I know the wait is so hard when you have tests done. I hate the waiting game.

PCOS is basically cysts on your ovaries...causes all kinds of horrible side effects like fertility issues, increased hair growth, acne, weight issues, etc. It isn't fun. I was diagnosed at 17 and was told that it would be basically impossible for me to have children. Hubby and I tried 5 years and now I'm pregnant, so I thank God for this. I feel like my baby is my miracle. :)

And thank you for the prayers...I really could use them and hope I pass on the 11th! I've luckily had no complications with my pregnancy so far and wouldn't want GD!

Oh . They didn't make me fast for my 1hr. Told me to eat normally and no sugar right before the test. If it's only a 1hr and your doctor has you fasting you should be fine if your appointment is early in the morning. You will basically drink the Orange liquid and then after an hour they will draw your blood. After that you can leave. For me my OB requires the sugar level be less than 140. ( I am pretty sure this is the standard for the test) I am sure you will be fine and pass it;)

I didn't get the option either with my old OB but that was a very long time ago. I also fasted from midnight. So I ate a snack around 11:00pm hoping it would ward off the fainting. My nurse recommended it since I pass out easily. I would definitely take a snack to eat right after the test is complete and make sure you go straight to get lunch. Most people don't faint. I tend to only because I have hypoglycemia. Most people complain the liquid makes the nauseous and sometimes they feel slightly dizzy. I am sure you will be fine though! You are able to drink water which helps. Take a book or something to help keep you distracted if you start feeling queasy. My lab also provides reclining chairs in case you feel like you need to lay down. Most people pass the 3hr with no problem! I will be praying for you:)

  • Good luck to all of you that have to take the tests. I'm waiting on my results from the 1 hour. My doctor didn't tell me that I would be taking the test at 24 weeks so I assumed it would be at my 28 week appointment. For breakfast at my 24 week appointment, I had 2 poptarts, 2 eggs, and 2 cups of orange juice. Look at all of that sugar! I told my doctor and he said it's been 2 hours since I ate so it should be normal if I'm not diabetic. I feel cheated badly. I'm positive that I will have to take the 3 hour test.
