Baby Names

Baby girl #3

hi ladies! Having a hard time choosing name for baby girl #3. Here are our choices:

Harper Sloan or Finley Sloan.

Our two other daughters are: Rylee Madison & Landry Cate.

Re: Baby girl #3

  • Neither of them are great. However Harper is a lot better than Finley. Finley Sloan sounds like you really wanted a boy.

  • Loading the player...
  • I really like Harper and Finley, and Sloan for that matter, but I agree with pp a little. Finley is a more of a masculine name and in my opinion needs a frilly girly middle name, which Sloan is not. Harper is more girly on its own, so if you're set on Sloan for the mn I would definitely go with Harper. Congrats :-)
  • I really dislike them both but I guess Harper.

  • Out of those two, I like Harper...Finley is too boyish to me, but Harper is nice and flows better with Sloan

Here's some other ideas just in case based off the names you've given...

    Everly Sloan
    Brenna Sloan
    Audra Sloan
    Elena Sloan
    Tenley Sloan
    Kendall Sloan
  • Neither of them are great. However Harper is a lot better than Finley. Finley Sloan sounds like you really wanted a boy.

Didn't consider Finley because I really wanted a boy. Just like the name, and definitely would never name a boy Finley.
  • Definitely Harper; Finley is a boys name and boys name only.
  • I would choose harper but my dd #3 is Harper Claire so I would be a little bias!
  • Harper. Finley makes too rhymey a sib set with your other girls names.

Yes heaven forbid you use a male name on a boy. ::gasp::

It's so far from better. I wish it could all go back to the way it was. Why fix something that's not broke? Oh well now
  • #1. Good grief people on here are rude.

#2. Finley does sound very masculine. However, I love Harper. I've considered it myself, after Harper Lee (I kind of geek out over To Kill a Mockingbird)
  • Finley is awful and sounds like you wanted a DS . Harper is fine. Sloane as a first name is even better.
    DS1 : 10/2012
Due with B/G Twins July 2015
  • Sloane, with an E.  No to Harper or Finley.

So, by asking opinion about names makes me a troll? Good lord, I think some people are just looking for an argument!
  • I think it's more that most of the names lately are misspelled/made up/completely ridiculous/masculine names for girls ect. It's happening way more then it was before which makes it seem like people are purposely starting threads with ridiculous names to stir up trouble.

Well, one shouldn't assume. I've had those names picked since DD #1, and they're definitely not made up, nor spelled incorrectly. As far as "very masculine", everyone is entitled to their own opinion about that. My other two DD's names came from the boy section of the baby name name book.

All the names I've chosen, I'd never name my son one of those names, even though they're "boy" names.

Her point wasn't directed at you specifically. It just seems that after the last Great Migration, there are a lot more posts of people with youneek spellings and gender bending names. You just happened to fall into that trend. She's not calling you out as a troll or a troublemaker.

ETA: I'm curious what you WOULD  name a son, and why you chose male names for your girls

There is no opinion about the names being masculine though. It's a fact. You may not care and that's your choice but it's based on history and language and not an opinion.

I didn't necessarily go after boy names for my girls, I heard the names, and liked them. They just happen to be boy names. Harper has been my all time fav since middle school (when we read To Kill A Mockingbird).

If this baby had been a boy, our boy names were: Max, Oliver, or Jack.
  • Everyone says Harper is because of TKAMB. It's eye roll worthy when 739372 people say that.

  • Finley is a boy's name and Harper is a trendy mess of a girl's name. I suggest starting over.

This may be true, but if a boy was named Harper in my area of the country, he would be picked on for having a girl's name. Point being, gender associations change.
  • Please don't name your girl Finley. Harper is a little better, but still very trendy and nms.

Well, I'm not everyone, and my reasoning is valid. Roll your eyes all you want. Hey, I'll even join you!
  • Love Harper not crazy about Sloan but I like Harper Sloan much better. Don't like Finley at all

    Cute.

If you spent anytime on the board you would see over the past year Harper comes up all the time. It generally gets negative reviews and the OP then 95% of the time returns with it's because I LoVe TKAMB. It's like my most favorite book ever. The book is a classic yes but it's also required to be read in likely 99% of middle or high schools. So when every poster comes back with that reasoning it is ridiculous. It's gives the impression that the OP is trying to look smart and educated about a book and it's there reasoning for liking a masculine trend name when they get negative feedback on the name. everyone has had to read the book in school and I'm pretty sure it's truly not everyone's favorite book ever. It's the same when a made up name is posted and OP comes back well it's a family name because they are trying to validate their reasoning. Sure TKAMB might be your favorite book of all time but it's less likely to be believable when every poster states that and it is eye roll worthy. Lurk some and you will see the same responses over and over and even several is Harper Lee a good name posts.

^^ Some may find such opinionated judgment of strangers to be "eye roll worthy."

(And yes, a lot of people name their kid after Harper Lee. Yes, at some point that becomes trendy and worn out. I probably won't use the name for that reason. But to question whether or not it's *actually* someone's favorite book...now that's just silly.)

Please don't assume that I made up TKAMB being my all time favorite book just because a bunch of strangers think Harper is masculine. I don't need an excuse to like a name. I also don't need to throw out a fav book to look smart & educated. For you to say that, shows how ignorant you are. It's my fav book, and has been. And where is your data that all schools require you to read TKAMB? It definitely wasn't required at my school. We had a choice, and I chose TKAMB, and loved it. I asked a simple question about names. I didn't ask to basically be called a liar.

It is masculine. Fact not just opinions on a forum. It is trendy right now on girls again a fact. If you read you would see I said almost all posters come back with that being their reason. It very well could be YOUR favorite book. Great. I'm stating facts that posters always claim that which is why it seems ridiculous after hearing it over and over. Also it's again a fact that TKAMB is on almost every education list, a simple google search will tell anyone that. Unclench a little. You like Harper great use it. Many posters stated they didn't, take there opinions how you will considering you asked for them.

  • None....
    Hailey and Sarah are better?
  • Tbh I've only ever heard the name Finley on dogs, I've never met a person with that name. Just for that reason I would suggest using Harper.
