How long did you take a maternity leave? With my first baby i went back to work 20 days after i had her and it was rough. Im also thinking about changing jobs entirely and thought about doing that during my maternity leave so thatni dont lose any money. Advice?
Re: Employment/maternity leave
Edit cause words aren't my friend today.
And that's okay!
You're kidding right? Yea, because the women who go back at 6 weeks couldn't possibly want more time. Not everyone lives in your perfect little world. Seriously, I'm side eyeing the shit out of you right now.
OP, I'll be taking 41/2-5 months off as I did with my first.
Side note/question - My Dr. cut my bladder during an emergency c section when I gave birth to DD. A nurse said to me in the hospital while recovering from TWO surgeries that since I was injured during my birth that by law I was entitled to an additional 4 weeks for 16 weeks total. Not sure if this is correct and I did not act on it but
in hind site I should have. Anyone heard of this time extension? It's definitely something to research and keep in mind if something else unfortunate happens with the new baby.
My boss said I should come back after 3-4 weeks. I'm sure they would let me take longer, but I question if we can afford that since our personal insurance (because I don't get health benefits either) isn't picking up the costs they implied they would since I'm "high risk" so I'm suddenly stuck paying several hundred more dollars a month in all these medical bills, and have wiped out our savings. That money was going to be my maternity leave but now it's going to be so tight just for those few weeks off I'll get.
I'm lucky because I'll likely be able to bring my baby to work with me for the first few weeks, but I'd much rather stay home, especially since the doctor thinks it likely that I'll have a c-section and that baby will be several weeks early. And you're sitting there complaining about only getting 12 weeks and side eye-ing all of us who don't have that good fortune...
I was fortunate to be able to take 4.5 months off after my daughter was born, all paid (it ate up 6 years worth of accumulated sick leave benefits). When I came back I couldn't stand working five days straight every week. It was really hard being away from my daughter so much!
We are all moms here. We get it. If you go back to work full-time after having your baby it's probably because you need to make ends meet... or because maybe you have the most kick-ass amazing dream job ever. Or you're working on the cure for cancer. Whatever it is, it makes sense in your life.
When you do go back to work, pace yourself. If you can, try taking the first two Wednesdays off so you get a break to be with your baby mid-week. For your emotional sanity. The transition back can be difficult, even if you think you are prepared... you don't know until you're back at work again.
