Employment/maternity leave

How long did you take a maternity leave? With my first baby i went back to work 20 days after i had her and it was rough. Im also thinking about changing jobs entirely and thought about doing that during my maternity leave so thatni dont lose any money. Advice?

  • I get 12 weeks unpaid, per FMLA. I'll be using any sick, vacation, personal, and comp time to cover as much paid as possible. I started saving for both the birth and whatever potion of unpaid leave a couple months ago.
  • I don't understand how some women go back to work 4-6 weeks after their baby is born. I'm a FTM though but I think I'm going to want as much time as possible with my little one. Luckily my job has open vacation policy so they tell me I can take off how ever long I want. I just don't really know what's reasonable. I'm thinking 12 weeks but I want more!

I'm im the military. I'm FORCED to go back after 6 weeks...it's not that I don't want to spend as much time as I can with my baby....
This. I'm planning on 12 weeks, but I definitely have the type of personality that would go insane being home that long and desire to go back to work.

    And that's okay!

I am taking the full 12 FMLA weeks. My company offers short term disability pay for 6-8 weeks depending on type of birth. I will save up PTO and saving cash now to bridge the remaining 6-4 unpaid weeks. As a FTM I was miserable the last couple weeks of leave knowing I had to go back to work. I so wasn't ready. But it got better with time as we found our new routine.

Edit: it's actually 5-7 weeks for STD pay with 1 week of PTO to start the process.

Mine is exactly the same. I'm planning on taking 12 weeks as well.

  • I will for sure be taking the 12 weeks through FMLA (6 weeks of short-term disability paying 2/3 and the rest unpaid).  I did the same with my first and definitely enjoyed having the time with her.  Financially it got tough towards the end because we hadn't saved like we should have and still had a lot of debt.  This time around we are in a much better place financially and I am down to part-time hours at my day job and running an online business.  I'm still going back and forth on just leaving entirely and focusing on the business full time or staying at part-time after maternity leave.  Pros and cons of both!
  • I'll be taking 12 weeks FMLA... I'll get 4 weeks STD and I'll use whatever vacation/sick time I have to cover what I can, but I'm sure I'll still have a few weeks completely unpaid, so I'm trying to save up now to cover that.

As others have said, some women sadly can't take more than 6 weeks time off after the baby is born. Some times less! Let's not forget that sadly not all of us have the option to spend as much time as we possibly can with our little ones.

So true! I think 12 weeks is plenty for me, but I empathize with anyone who does not get what they feel is enough time with their newly-acquired little ones!

Oh, and also I'm somewhat considering changing jobs also. I really go back and forth because there are days I love my job and days I don't. So my plan is to just keep my eyes open for other opportunities during my leave.

  • I am and have always taken the full 12w given through FMLA. My company pays me partially for 6w. I will use PTO to cover part of the unpaid leave and we budget for the rest.

  • I'm gonna try to take 6 to 8 weeks off. I get 12 vacation days I'm saving plus husband and I are saving for my maternity leave. Wish i could take longer :(
  • I have seven weeks paid through my employer. I work from home though, so when I "go back" I will still be right here with the baby. My mom and MIL are also planning to help me a few hours each day when I need them. But I am very fortunate that my job is pretty lax and I don't work 40-hour weeks.
  • I consider myself very lucky that we can back sick days from year to year.  Next year will be my tenth year in the same position so I am planning on taking 8-10 weeks depending on how close to the start of the new school year the baby comes.  I too am jealous of  you Canadians!!
  • I will get 6 weeks five of which I can use STD. But I have been at my job less than a year so I don't qualify for FMLA. I can take two to three weeks of pto on top of that but then I'm back to work. I carry the insurance and make make almost 50% of our income. I can't afford to take more time.

  • I don't get any paid maternity leave through my job, only whatever PTO time I have saved up. It resets every year though and I only get 3 weeks. I'll probably only be able to take the standard 6-8 weeks and I'm already upset about it.

You're kidding right? Yea, because the women who go back at 6 weeks couldn't possibly want more time. Not everyone lives in your perfect little world. Seriously, I'm side eyeing the shit out of you right now.

OP, I'll be taking 41/2-5 months off as I did with my first.
I was talking about some women who chose to go back to work after only 6 weeks... Not the ones that have to! Ive heard others say that they were ready to go back to work after that amount of time. I'm not judging anyone I was just saying that I don't understand their decision to go back after such a short period of time.

  • I will take 16 weeks again- 4 weeks before my due date and 12 weeks after. I am in CA and pay into state disability insurance every paycheck so i will get paid 60% of my normal pay for 15 of the 16 weeks from CA disability insurance, and use pto for the other week.

  • I'm taking 12 weeks. My work will pay for 8 of them and I need to use vacation time for three and go without pay for one.

Side note/question - My Dr. cut my bladder during an emergency c section when I gave birth to DD. A nurse said to me in the hospital while recovering from TWO surgeries that since I was injured during my birth that by law I was entitled to an additional 4 weeks for 16 weeks total. Not sure if this is correct and I did not act on it but
in hind site I should have. Anyone heard of this time extension? It's definitely something to research and keep in mind if something else unfortunate happens with the new baby.

i have not heard of that specifically, but i would not doubt it is true. i know you can get extensions on leave if you are not healing as normal, or if you are suffering from ppd, etc.

Just be cautious and don't be greedy to mess it up for mothers after you!! The pregnant female before me caused policy changes that affected those after her....and shes no longer employed with us, but she royally messed it up for future mommies!!! and Im so sure you are the ONLY one that wants to spend "as much time as possible" with their new baby!!! Geez
  • I really feel for anyone who has to go back to work out of necessity, whether it is 6 weeks or 6 months later. It is HARD!

I was fortunate to be able to take 4.5 months off after my daughter was born, all paid (it ate up 6 years worth of accumulated sick leave benefits). When I came back I couldn't stand working five days straight every week. It was really hard being away from my daughter so much!

We are all moms here. We get it. If you go back to work full-time after having your baby it's probably because you need to make ends meet... or because maybe you have the most kick-ass amazing dream job ever. Or you're working on the cure for cancer. Whatever it is, it makes sense in your life.

When you do go back to work, pace yourself. If you can, try taking the first two Wednesdays off so you get a break to be with your baby mid-week. For your emotional sanity. The transition back can be difficult, even if you think you are prepared... you don't know until you're back at work again.
  • I want to move!! Lol I In the beginning wanted to do 12 Weeks, but then realizing I only get 6 weeks pay at 60% and then no pay after and I'm the bigger source of income in our house, it's just not possible which stinks. Also I'm a store manager and don't want to go back to a complete disaster, so I'll prob use some vaca time after so I'm not on full weeks until, maybe 9ish weeks
  • I am planning full unpaid FMLA...but just found out that along with not being paid of course...since I carry our insurance I have to cut my employer a check to cover that while I'm on leave. Awesome...there goes the short term disability check I get...that I of course pay for. So upset and just pissed that this "family friendly"workplace has no support for new moms and families.
  • I'm taking 6 months....with my reg. Leave and FMLA I will get full pay using my sick and PTO time....then once all used up I'm quitting for good!

I would ask your payroll/HR department if they would allow you to do "catch-up" contributions once you return to work. It is something that we offer to employees who are on leave and depending on the amount it can be spread over several pay periods. Just a thought and it doesn't hurt to ask. Most employers can understand and if you are a good employee they should be willing to at least consider it.
