Swaddling...???

How old is too old to swaddle... ? Some places are saying 3 or some months while others are saying it's ok to swaddle up to 9 months if baby is more comfortable... What's the take?

Re: Swaddling...???

  • I don't see what it matters. If your baby is comfortable and sleeping good in a swaddle then great! I think your LO will let you know when he/she wants to be free. I use a Merlin Magic Sleep Suit and it's supposed to be a transition suit from swaddling to eventually nothing. It works great

Agree with above post. We just stopped a couple weeks ago, so at about 5 months. He was too big and squirmy! The one thing I have read is that once they really start to roll over, that's a good time so they don't get caught on their belly without the use of their arms to roll back again. We use the merlin suit too and it is working great as a transition
  • She was too Long for her halo outfit so I cut the Velcro arm wrap off and had been using just the wrap... But my step mother in law thinks it's wrong to be swaddling her past 5 months. It became a huge issue... But I didn't know what the normal was for age o not swaddling since she seemed to sleep so well... Am I wrong?
  • We swaddles up until 4 months (LO is 5 & 1/2 months now) and stopped because she was a little Houdini that escaped every night. So they'll definitely let you know when they're done with the swaddling!
  • You are not wrong, you do what's right for your baby and family. If your MIL wants to come sleep over and take care of your LO when she doesn't sleep good cause she isn't swaddled then let her. My baby had heart surgery when he was born and I learned very fast that a baby will let you know when they are ready for the next step. Just watch for the signs. Like the posts above say, if you feel it is dangerous to swaddle then don't swaddle, but if your baby is sleeping great in a swaddle then let it be until he/she lets you know they want to be un swaddled.
  • Thanks for the feed back y'all. Make me feel a lil better knowing I'm not the only one that was still swaddling for so long. <3
  • When they can roll over. My LO rolled over in his swaddled a month ago, so we had to stop.

He slept much better swaddled. I'd swaddle as long as possible!

This. As soon as the baby can roll over well it's probably time to stop. My LO started breaking out of his swaddle almost every night so we were going to stop soon. Then he rolled over while swaddled and I stopped immediately. He's currently just in a sleep sack but not sleeping great so I ordered the Magic Sleep Suit. Hoping it is actually magic!!

  • Oh it's magic!
  • I stopped swaddling with her arms in once she was rolling, so about 6 weeks ago. I still swaddle with her arms out. The Halo swaddlers work pretty good for that, but I mostly just use the "swaddle me" ones from Walmart, and only put them on up to her armpits and the length is perfect. LO is petite, so that may not work for everyone.

We transitioned from regular swaddle to Sleepy Wings jacket. Our baby was escaping every other swaddles. He also loves sleeping with his arms up.
