1st baby - felt like I had to pee. Repeatedly. At ridiculous rate for some one almost 40 weeks pregnant even. The third time in 10 minutes I called my doctor and went in. Soaked a super absorbent pad and pair of pants on the way to the office.
2nd baby- felt a pop and a leak like wetting one's self but without the urge to go or bladder kick sensation. Baby's head dropped and slowed the leak until I got to the hospital where I then leaked fluid consistently until the doctor ruptured the tiny pocket the baby's head had created.
This time-sudden Niagara falls type rupture worthy of a TV sitcom. Soaked a couple hand towels and a double layer of depends inside an hour and then several hospital pads for the rest of labor.
I was told that it was rare for water to break first and then….my water broke first. I woke up the day after my EDD at 5AM thinking I had peed in the bed. It was clear with no scent. I called the midwife on duty and she told me to come in so they could make sure. It was, in fact, my water. No contractions were happening and I was 0CM with 0 effacement. I was told to come back in in 12 hours if there were no contractions. I was also told to go about my day like normal. 12 hours later- NOTHING. Not even cramping. The problem when your water breaks first is that you are prone to infection and if there is no sign of contractions, the doctors will try to induce you. I did not want that. I went back to the hospital and I was having contractions, but could not feel them. This whole time you are leaking all day. They tell you to keep drinking water. I went home and stronger contractions happened. Baby was born by the next night.
So while my water did not break dramatically like it does in the movies, it did break first without any other signs of labor happening.
