Hair Loss

Hello Everyone! I hope today is treating all of the mommies out there nicely. I'm 18 weeks postpartum and up until recently I would lose a few hairs here and there, but when I take my hair down or shower there are hundreds of hairs shedding and spiraling down the drain. I know that when taking prenatals it strengthens hair during pregnancy and I have not been taking any for a while now, but why the huge increase of hair loss?!?

Re: Hair Loss

  • As we all know, child birth is a huge stress on our bodies, whether we delivered naturally or cesarean. As we heal from this our body uses more protein and if we fall short in our diet the body steals it from sources within the body - first place it goes is hair and nails. So a mix of this and just plain old stress is typically what causes it. We see the same thing with surgical weight loss patients in my clinic. The hair loss most commonly starts at about 3 months and May last 3-6 months. Almost always temporary and reversible though, luckily!

I'm in the same boat as you currently, I'm now 20 weeks PP and have what seems like wads of hair coming out daily. Can't wait for it to end!

  • Totally normal but I had heard a different reason for it. I was told that it happens because at around the 3 month mark a lot of the hormones that caused changes during pregnancy are starting to balance out again. That definitely makes sense for me because at the same time that my hair started falling out I also broke out around my mouth which is hormone related and used to happen to me a lot pre-pregnancy and I started getting some cramps and thought AF was on it's way back (that hasn't happened yet though). Im now 21 weeks PP and I'm shedding hair but it doesn't seem so excessive any more. Maybe more like pre-pregnancy?? I don't know, it's been so long I don't remember ;)
