Car seats that work for 3-4 year olds Rear facing?

My kids are currently in Britax Boulevards. My son will be outgrowing his seat for RF'ing soon. I am thinking about upgrading the seats in my car to a good car seat that will help us RF for about another year and then will also FF And be a good car seat for 4-5 year olds. I will then put my Britax Boulevards in my husband's car FF (they very rarely ever ride with him). We also plan to buy 2 Harmony Defender's to put in our part time nanny's car (she doesn't drive them at all right now, but will probably start taking them to the park/library this spring/summer-very short distances, so I will let them FF in her car).

What car seat should I get for my car to ERF? I drive a 2012 Ford Explorer with captain seats in the middle. There isn't much room between the front seats and the rear facing Britax boulevards right now. DS is 36.5-37", ~34 pounds, 13.5" seated height, DD is ~36-36.5", 30lbs, 13" seated height.

kudos on ERF!

i think most seats have a max rear-facing weight limit of 40 lbs. i do know the chicco nextfit has one of the taller shells on the market, so it's recommended for ERF. you can RF a child who is up to 40 lbs and up to 49". you can also easily adjust the recline position of the seat (it clicks back and forth), so it will fit just about anywhere. we have 2 and love them. DS is almost 2 1/2 and 30 lbs, and has plenty of room. you can FF up to 65 lbs and 50".

You can RF a bit longer in the Clek Foonf, too and it will turn into a good FF seat as well. I love ours and wish I would've bought one for both cars. I bought it specifically for the extended rear facing option because my son is huge. At 2.5 when we flipped him, he was 43 inches but we wouldn't have even been able to keep him that long in most seats.

we have a foonf for both boys, and i love it. just turned my older son ff when we had the baby (he was just over 3) b/c of space issues, but my younger son will rf as long as he meets the requirements.

We went to BRU today and put the kids in a Graco 4 ever and Chicco Nextfit. We really liked the Chicco and are leaning toward those. Of course, they didn't have the Foonf to try out.
