I asked the baby name board

About the boys name "Jax"...I'm not particularly fond of "Jaxon" or "Jackson" having the NN "Jacks". They informed me unanimously that this was horrid, but it's kind of the only thing I like right now. What would you do? Just curious what my BMB ladies would advise. :)

Edited to clarify that I want to name him Jax, and skip the Jaxon/Jackson situation all together. Oops.

It's NMS, but I don't think it's horrendous. If you love it, go for it. I have a friend who just named her son Dax, and they're pretty cool cats.

ETA; You could always give him a "professional" sounding middle name, so if in the future he wants to use that, he has the option. (i.e. J. Micheal Starkbaby, M.D.)

  • Not a fan. But, that's just me. I prefer names that have multiple options and don't start out as nicknames.

...I don't think there's anything wrong with it. People get super picky when asked their opinion. If you already had a boy named Jax I'm sure you would get comments about how cute his name is!

  • I personally like it. Ultimately, it's up to just you and your baby's dad, so really any opinion, for or against, shouldn't factor into your decision.

Unless you were going with something like one of these... lol

  • I like Jax. It's different but not the bad kind of different lol
  • Not a fan. But, that's just me. I prefer names that have multiple options and don't start out as nicknames.

And I hate names that have too many nick name options. LOL! Our daughter Bella is just Bella because neither of us like "izzy" for a NN.

I don't think Jax/on or Jackson is UNprofessional sounding or looking. We're truly having a really hard time "loving" any names...This one has just been the most discussed, so maybe it's the name?! Thanks for all the input, guise! ;)

Right? I think it sounds strong and "looks" strong, different, but not ridiculous.

I mean, I'm not trying to be harsh but it really doesn't.  It looks like the parents were trying too hard to make it unique and different.

    ::shrugs::

Meh. Potato patato. ;) no worries. I asked for opinions. Thanks!

  • @starkbaby22: It's going to be your child, do what you want...I don't think an adult named Jax is ridiculous, nor is the spelling that unique. It seems as if the the name is becoming more common place.

    To each their own.

  • I'm usually not a fan of unconventional names, but for some reason, I think Jax sounds like it has a lot of personality to it. It's not my style, but I think you should go for it! I agree with @mccall35‌ though, definitely consider a more traditional middle name.

As far as the Jackson/Jaxon debate, I'm not particularly fond of either, but I absolutely despise Jaxon. Sorry to anyone who likes it, it just really grates on my nerves!

  • They tore me apart for wanting to name my baby Dashiell. I don't tend to like any of the names they suggest on that board so it doesn't really bother me.

  • The baby name board has a certain style I've noticed. They all seem to suggest the same names.

I prefer Jackson. I hate Jaxon. Jax as a nickname for Jackson isn't bad?

  • I asked the baby name board about naming my girl Avery. They hated it because it is traditionally a boys name. I'm glad I asked them because I started thinking about other names since I was worried the name was too masculine. Well, that just made me realize that I am in love with the name Avery and couldn't think of any thing else I liked more. I'm glad I got their opinion though, because it got me thinking just in case, only to realize I loved the name more than I thought.

I personally would not name my son Jax, because it reminds of the game with the jacks and the bouncy ball. However, if you love it (and it's not ridiculous) I say go for it.

  • Not my favorite name, but not horrid. FWIW I asked them about a name that got a resounding "no" and their suggestions instead were absolutely terrible to the point where if I met a child with the names I would feel bad for them. A few people aren't the end-all be-all of name choosing...there is a hell of a lot worse you can do than Jax

I like Avery. The only Avery I have met has been female.
  • I like Jax!   I've been hearing alot of it lately, 2 new babies born in the last month I heard with that name.

Agreed. I think Avery sounds very feminine.

  • I'm pretty sure I responded to this on the Baby name board already, but I'll do it again. It is absolutely not my style. I also know too many Jacksons, Jacks, etc.

I am not against having a"nickname" as a fn as I have one myself that I legally change it to when I got married. And one of the names on my list is a nn as I am with you on that I do not like the full name version. The women on the BNB don't "know" you as well as the month board and they are jsut giving you their honest opinion.

However, it sounds like as of now you are pretty set on this name, so if you are I say JFDI! Naming humans is hard and if you find something you love and your SO loves too--go for it...if your kid doesn't like it when they are older they can always change it.

  • If its what you like go for it. I asked about a name too and people on there didnt like it. Then I thought well I like it so who cares!!
  • I like Jax. It's unique and trendy. Plus it reminds me of that hottie from SOA.

We decided on Camden for our baby boy. A couple people have said they hate it but I dont give a shit because I love it and he's my kid. The hubby less Cam as a nick name.
  • I like Jax. Don't worry, no one likes our names either. But it's our baby.

  • I like it! :)
  • I think it's awful. Might sound "cute" to you when he is a little boy, but think about that name for a grown MAN. Give him a name he won't be embarrassed to put on a resume. Not a name he will have to explain.
Dumb names are selfish on the parents part.
I disagree completely with the statement "it's your baby; name it what you want" of course it's your baby, but that baby will grow into an adult, an individual. And he will be stuck with your silly choice forever.
  • I think Jax is really cute, but my hesitation would be that it may be hard to transition into an adult/professional name. It is a precious little boy's name, but not so great for an adult.

If you are absolutely set on calling him Jax, I would give him a different first name, use Jax as a middle name, and he can go by the first name as an adult if/when he grows out of Jax. Not a perfect solution, but it at least gives him an option.

    Best of luck!

The baby name board is to get people's opinions on a name.  You got honest opinions (I happen to agree that it's awful).  After your baby is born and named that, you probably won't hear much, but the BNB will give you an idea of how much people will talk behind your back.

In the end, it's your kid, yes.  You'll name it what you want.  Friends and family will deal.  You'll either get the side-eye (all the time) or you won't.  You know what the societal consensus is likely to be.  Accept it, and decide whether or not you care.

The BNB would not like one of my top names if we adopt a daughter - Sierra.  I know some family will side-eye me for it, but no worse than names others in the family have already used.  I know Eowyn, Humility, Chase, Sunny Ray, O.lin, Berry, Blaze, Jimette, Tauren, and Crystal Rain (Crystal was born in the 80s, of course).  Do they get side-eyed?  Yep.  Did anyone who mattered to the parents say anything once the kid was born?  Nope.  Did the one who are grown get in the habit of explaining their name?  Yep (though Blaze just says "I know.  I hate my parents.")

  • Jax reminds me of that man whore on "Vanderpump Rules" Lol

    I don't hate the name.

  • I wouldn't reject a name just because the baby name board doesn't care for it. That said, I don't disagree with them.
