Formula virgin question

Bought my first can of formula today. Made the mistake of going with the kids so I couldn't spend the 45 minutes it could have easily taken to pick one out. So grabbed a Nestlé follow-up transition that is for 6 month to 24 month olds that is suppose to be a "nutritious transition before introducing cow's milk". Get it home, the second ingredient is corn syrup and corn maltodextrin. WTF? I don't feed my 4 year old corn syrup much less the baby. Is this normal? Do all formulas have corn syrup? How can this be?

Re: Formula virgin question

  • Is there corn syrup in the ingredient list of your formula?

I'm starting the transition away from breast feeding. Can't handle the work pumping. This product was with all the formulas didn't seem different or special. It was on sale and pretty much the same price as all the other formulas.

  • We use Enfamil and there is no corn syrup in the ingredients. As long as its not opened, I wouldn't see you having a problem returning it. If you have already opened it, I would try to donate it somewhere.
  • I've always used the regular Similac brand that doesn't have it but I bought the "gentle" kind or whatever they promote for fussy babies once for my 1st and corn syrup was in that. No thanks!

  • Yes it is definitely going back. I'll try and get some alone time one day so I can paruse more thoroughly. How can they get away with corn syrup as the second ingredient in formula. Makes me pretty angry.
  • We use Earths Best. there are some good formula comparison websites/blogs I would check out before going to the store. Corn syrup can also go by different names so be cautious of that
  • @Jessimax‌ No corn syrup! And the cans are huge, they're $23. They last us about 3 weeks. Hope you find something better than what you bought! So bizarre

3 weeks!!! Holy crap! I spend $25 on similac that lasts about a week and a half-ish, 25-30 oz per day. My sister has a Costco near her. I'm going to have to get her to look for me. I'm so glad you said something.

  • So I never looked at the ingredients of the formula DD has been getting for months. First ingredient: corn syrup!
    Looks like we'll be switching.
  • We are getting our first Costco... cant wait!

  • The percent of lactose (a sugar) vs fat in cows milk is lower than in human milk, so they have to add something to better mimic the nutrition and taste. While adding addtional lactose would seem to be the obvious answer, it is also the most expense. All formula will have some kind of added sugar, corn syrup is just the cheapest one.
  • I'm sorry this was never meant to start a formula vs breast milk battle. I've always breast fed. I've decided to start weaning and I just wanted to know if corn syrup in formula was actual thing or if I just bought a crappy formula.
  • I wouldn't be thrilled with the corn syrup either, but there's a difference between regular corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup. They are totally different things. The high fructose variety being the one associated with negative health effects.

I'm guessing they use regular corn syrup in formula because it has a high glucose content.
